II. Silicon IP / IP based solutions

1- IP and IP based solution Providers

This first section focuses on the analysis of the providers who publicize either licensable IPs and/or IP based solutions. D&R sees a fast evolution in this area.

Up to now highlight was put on providers delivering on the market licensable cores. A first evolution as a sign of maturity shows a shift towards providers proposing on the market a solution made up of a set of licensable IPs often dedicated to specific area where their design skills have reached a high level of excellence. This approach can be associated to a physical or virtual platform which allows a fast and safe design.

Another significant event is the announcement of ASIC, ASSP, programmable devices, vendors, IDMs promoting their IP based approach as a sales catalyst. In this case, IPs are technology dependent and are powerful successor of libraries and macros in the past and require by the way more resources.

The chart below shows that to day D&R on its website publishes 83% IP based products from vendor selling licensable cores. The 17% remaining is the initial sign of the market and D&R attention.

Programmable 4% ASIC/ASSP/IDM 6%

IP based EDA Solution 7% Provider (Licensable Core Provider, Design Center) 83%

Figure 4 : IP and IP based solution provider

2- IP offers

When analyzing IP offer, all type of IPs are merged. The distribution across application fields exhibits still a peak for Analog & Mixed Signal. As said in the previous quarters, this refers to the granularity of the offer description in this field .Most of the providers adopt description styles exhibiting various instances of parameterized blocks, for instance on various technologies.

2 – User Attention (per application field)

The chart below presents the different levels of user attention over the respective application fields in Q4, measured by the number of product views. The user attention has shifted from the bus interface IPs to Analog IPs while the attention to interface IPs remains very hot.

Figure 6: User Attention (per application field)

3 – User Interest (per provider)

The tables below give out a general picture of the market interest over the various vendors worldwide through the number of IP views for users in the D&R web portal in Q1 2005. Note that the number of users showing interest and downloading the data sheet increased significantly this last quarter (for the hottest provider versus 1 107 last quarter). This is a very good sign even though the summer quarter is de facto a quiet one;

A) Group 1: Hottest Providers

In this quarter, 8 providers, constitute the set of the hottest providers and are clearly on the top of the remaining ones.

IP/SoC Market Watch 6 ÓCopyright 2005 – Design And Reuse Bulletin n°23 – Q1 - 2005

For licensable core providers Chipidea stays on top followed by Faraday, Cast and Qualcore.

Representing EDA vendors note that Cadence has taken the leadership followed by Synopsys ahead of Mentor. Thus the three EDA vendors, worldwide leaders give all three a very high importance to the IP based design approach.

And finally an ASIC platform vendor LSI logic consolidates its position as a number one of the platform vendors fully leveraging an IP based approach design.

Overall D&R is glad to see a broad attention to all classes of players (IP provider, EDA vendors and platform vendors).

Table 2 : Hottest Providers

B) Group 2: top winners (over 200 product views)

In this second group IP based solution providers take the advantage such as Nordic Semi conductor, Hantro and Wipro. So no doubt that the iP based solutions providers are the potential winners in the IP business

The FPGA vendor doing the best promotion of its IP offer stays Actel maybe because they need to maintain the attention of their niche market by providing a good IP portfolio of fast and reliable design.

Sci-worx stays ahead for years while Cambridge Consultants leverages its consultancy skills. Amphion after its acquisition by Conexant keeps a good visibility as well as Silicon & Software. No wonder of course to find ARM as web visitors need to be updated about the master cores as well as the library and cells provided by arm after the acquisition of Artisan thus mixing up a star IP publishing with an enabling libray publishing.

URL: http://www.us.design-reuse.com/sip/wantedl

This section analyzes the activities of the IP Search/Find Club in Q1, a B2B matching market place for the most urgently needed IP requests.

1 – End Product (application fields) – Who is looking for an IP?

Each quarter exhibits different needs .The following chart gives out the application field distribution of the requests posted in this B2B marketplace in Q1 2005 and this profile significantly differs from the previous quarter. Most of the demands came from the component field followed by the Communication/System field last quarter as for this quarter most of the demands come from compurter system followed by communicationsa nd automotive

Tools IP 7% 7% Other Computers, 26% Systems, Peripherals Automotive, 20% Consumer Components Electronics & 7% Appliances 13% Biometric Communication 7% Systems 13% Figure 7 : End Product (Q1 2005)

2 – Size of Companies looking for an IP (annual revenues)

In this quarter most of the demands for the first time come from rather small companies (under $10M). It could mean that rather small companies are to day the providers of Asic design worldwide

$10 Million to $99 Million None 8% 15% $500 Million to $1 Billion 15%

Under $10 Million 62% Figure 8 : Size of Companies looking for an IP (annual revenues)

3 – Specific IP Requests / Number of Offers Received – How were the IP demands satisfied by the providers?

The following tables display a list of IP demands that received several offers and that more likely triggered business.

Offers are numerous on both “extremities” namely for general purpose requests and for very specific ones. The first class of offers is probably triggered by the fact that many vendors have such a product, the second by the expectation of a demand coming from a very motivated client.

D&R as announced earlier is concentrating a lot of efforts in announcing IP based solution solutions in addition to its traditional Yellow Pages IP announcements. This helps visitor interested in an IP found through the Yellow Pages to be linked to the global announcement of the vendor to get a better vision on what he can expect.

On the other hands more clarification is give to technology captive IP based solutions announcement as visitors and customers may choose right away their technology providers;

1 – IP based solution Offers (per application field)

About 100 PP based solution have been listed in 5 different categories: Processor centric, Interconnect Centric, Application Centric , Design Flow Centric, and Technology captive.

42 % deal with licensable cores that can be grouped in a global offer or not. This offer may come from a high level design center skill.

The chart below shows the platform categories distribution:

2 – User Attention (per application field)

The chart below presents the different levels of user attention over the various platforms or IP based solutions measured by the number of platform views. About half of the attention goes to the technology captive solutions. This proves that there is a need for the visitor to get information about the IP based facilities offered by ASIC or ASSP, programmable devices when defining a product and hopefully may influence their technology choice
