For this aim to be achieved, thorough investigations have been going on in areas along the Hungarian section of river Drava, for more than twenty years. The exploration of natural values found in this river valley was started in the 1990s, and the results of research into the animal life of the region were first summarised in two volumes (UHERKOVICH 1995, 1998). Research was not discontinued when Duna-Drava National Park was established in this area in 1996, moreover it became even more intensive. One of the reasons was the threat posed by the plans of constructing a hydroelectric power plant at Novo Virje, Croatia. The power station is likely to bring about severe changes in the wildlife of Drava. It would especially threaten organisms that are found in this particular river section because of the fast-flowing water. Results of more recent studies were made available for as wide an audience as possible through the active co-operation between researchers and non-governmental organisations (SALLAI 2004). Based on knowledge about the biodiversity of the region, the monitoring of some distinguished taxa was launched in 2000. The results of the initial years were summarised in a volume published in English (ÁBRAHÁM 2005). Despite the efforts of both researchers and publishers, it is often experienced that research results do not find their way to experts of even very similar fields, not to mention decision makers of various infrastructural investments. Therefore, through this preface I would like to call the attention of the readers of this book to the aforementioned publications having been released earlier. It would be important to further improve and strengthen co-operation between scientists and NGOs working in areas along Drava. Results of the surveys must reach professionals of the neighbouring countries and decision-makers of infrastructural projects, and should also be used for informing the inhabitants of the target areas. Drava as a border river has outstanding significance. It can act as a barrier to the dispersion of certain, mostly terrestrial species, whereas – in the case of others – the river and its bordering forests can serve as a corridor facilitating the movement of species. Therefore it was deemed necessary to extend status surveys and monitoring onto Croatian areas too. With the help of the Slovenia-Hungary-Croatia Neighbourhood Programme we succeeded in turning this idea into reality, as part of the DRAVA-INTERECO project. The first and most important task was to compile a monitoring handbook, through the collaboration of Hungarian experts already having some experience in monitoring along Drava, and their Croatian colleagues. This manual can assist establishing monitoring schemes on the Croatian side of river Drava. This idea came true as a result of joint work between Hungarian and Croatian professionals (PURGER 2007). So as to lay the foundations of monitoring work in Croatian areas along river Drava, status surveys were carried out in the target areas during the year 2007, the results of which are published in this volume. We strongly believe that both the monitoring protocol book, and the collection of study reports with the results having been achieved so far can contribute to the conservation of biodiversity of river Drava and its surrounding areas, and we also hope that our initiative will have many followers. 7 References ÁBRAHÁM, L. Breve definición del grupo y principales caracteres diagnósticos Los tricópteros o frigáneas (Trichoptera, del griego trichos, "pelo" y pteron, "ala") son artrópodos de la Clase Insecta cuyos adultos portan alas cubiertas de pilosidad. Casi todas sus especies dependen del medio acuático para su desarrollo. La mayoría habitan en ríos y arroyos de aguas limpias y bien oxigena- das, aunque también se pueden encontrar en ambientes lénticos, terrestres e incluso marinos. Forman un grupo natural y están cercanamente emparentados con las mariposas y polillas (Lepi- doptera), que tienen escamas en sus alas y, como ellos, son capaces de producir seda. Ambos forman el superorden Amphiesmenoptera. De hecho, el grupo es sobre todo conocido por la habilidad de sus larvas para fabricar, con seda y diversos materiales, una gran variedad de construcciones como estuches portáti- les (Figura 1), refugios fijos, redes para la recogida de alimento y galerías, por lo que también se les ha denominado “arquitectos subacuáticos” (Mackay & Wiggins, 1979; Wiggins, 2004). Material was pitfall trapped in 2010 and 2011 on twelve sites of the agricultural landscape in the Prešov town and its near vicinity, Eastern Slovakia. A total of 14,763 ground beetle individuals were entrapped. Material collection resulted into 92 Carabidae species, with the following six species dominating: Poecilus cupreus, Pterostichus melanarius, Pseudoophonus rufipes, Brachinus crepitans, Anchomenus dorsalis and Poecilus versicolor. Studied habitats differed significantly in the number of entrapped individuals, activity abundance as well as representation of the carabids according to their habitat preferences and ability to fly. However, no significant distinction was observed in the diversity, evenness neither dominance.

    Washington Natural Heritage Program List of Animal Species with Ranks October 2017 The following list of animals known from Washington is complete for resident and transient vertebrates and several groups of invertebrates, including odonates, branchipods, tiger beetles, butterflies, gastropods, freshwater bivalves and bumble bees. Some species from other groups are included, especially where there are conservation concerns. Among these are the Palouse giant earthworm, a few moths and some of our mayflies and grasshoppers.     Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits.

Successful landscaping, however, requires much more than just the selection of plants. Unless you have some experience, it is suggested than you employ the services of a trained or otherwise experienced landscaper, arborist, or forester. For best results it is recommended that careful consideration be made in purchasing the plants from the local nurseries (i.e. Cascade, McCall, and New Meadows). Plants brought in from the Treasure Valley may not survive our local weather conditions, microsites, and higher elevations. Timing can also be a serious consideration as the plants may have already broken dormancy and can be damaged by our late frosts. Osogovo (Macedonia), as well as to analyze the mobility (based on mark-recapture of individuals) and seasonal dynamics and sex ratio of the ground beetle community. The study site included three localities (A, B, C), one of them fragmented (A), with four microhabitats (open area, ecotone, forest stand, and forested corridor). Ground beetles were collected using pitfall traps during four sampling months (June–September 2009) that were operational for three continuous days per month. Species richness, abundance, diversity, homogeneity, and dominance were compared between the localities. Dissimilarities in carabid assemblages between localities and microhabitats were analyzed with Bray–Curtis UPGMA cluster analysis. In total 1320 carabid individuals belonging to 19 species were captured. The carabid assemblage structure of the continuous forest locality was substantially different from the other two smaller forest patches, indicating that microhabitat structure affects ground beetle communities through changes of species composition and richness.
