Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT Data are presented from research conducted to investigate the role of beetle banks in the biological control of cereal aphids. A project designed to compare overwintering predator densities in a newly established beetle bank and two conventional hedgebanks over a five year period, indicated that predator densities were similar to or greater than those in the surrounding hedgebanks by the second year of the beetle banks establishment Predators found overwintering on the beetle bank included many species that are considered to be important predators of cereal aphids. A further overwintering experiment conducted over a four year period, investigated five different grass species sown on beetle banks and a natural regeneration treatment, for their suitability in providing overwintering cover for polyphagous predators. Overall, the highest overwintering predator densities were recorded in grass species with tussocky growth forms and the lowest predator densities were recorded in treatments where the vegetation on the beetle bank had been allowed to naturally regenerate. During the spring and summer, a predator exclusion experiment was conducted to explore the effect of. polyphagous predators emigrating from a beetle bank on cereal aphid populations in an adjacent crop of winter wheat. The results from this experiment indicated that polyphagous predators significantly reduced aphid populations in the crop, though the impact of polyphagous predation appeared to decrease with increasing distance away from the beetle bank. The results from the exclusion experiment, together with the results from a further experiment investigating the effect of the presence or absence of a beetle bank on the distribution of polyphagous predators in crops, also indicated that beetle banks aid the rapid colonisation of cereal fields by polyphagous predators in the early spring, when the potential for aphid control is optimal. Cost-benefit analysis suggested that an aphid population kept below spray threshold levels C by enhanced natural enemy populations emigrating from a beetle bank, could result in a small but potentially useful saving in insecticide costs. The results are discussed in the context of current agricultural policies and in relation to the potential environmental benefits of reducing the .reliance upon chemical methods to control cereal aphids. Further research needs are also identified.     Sand pit for Biodiversity at Cep II quarry Researcher: Klára Řehounková Research group: Petr Bogusch, David Boukal, Milan Boukal, Lukáš Čížek, František Grycz, Petr Hesoun, Kamila Lencová, Anna Lepšová, Jan Máca, Pavel Marhoul, Klára Řehounková, Jiří Řehounek, Lenka Schmidtmayerová, Robert Tropek Březen – září 2012 Abstract We compared the effect of restoration status (technical reclamation, spontaneous succession, disturbed succession) on the communities of vascular plants and assemblages of arthropods in CEP II sand pit (T řebo ňsko region, SW part of the Czech Republic) to evaluate their biodiversity and conservation potential. We also studied the experimental restoration of psammophytic grasslands to compare the impact of two near-natural restoration methods (spontaneous and assisted succession) to establishment of target species. The sand pit comprises stages of 2 to 30 years since site abandonment with moisture gradient from wet to dry habitats. In all studied groups, i.e. vascular pants and arthropods, open spontaneously revegetated sites continuously disturbed by intensive recreation activities hosted the largest proportion of target and endangered species which occurred less in the more closed spontaneously revegetated sites and which were nearly absent in technically reclaimed sites. Out results provide clear evidence that the mosaics of spontaneously established forests habitats and open sand habitats are the most valuable stands from the conservation point of view. It has been documented that no expensive technical reclamations are needed to restore post-mining sites which can serve as secondary habitats for many endangered and declining species. The experimental restoration of rare and endangered plant communities seems to be efficient and promising method for a future large-scale restoration projects in abandoned sand pits.

The duration of development, survivorship and adult size were compared for the larvae of Amara aenea reared in the first generation on pure diets of seeds ( Stellaria media, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Tussilago farfara, Plantago major, Urtica or dioica, Potentilla argentela), or a pure diet of yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor larvae), and on a mixed diet of seeds and mealworm larvae (T. molitor, S. media and C. bursa-pastoris). To ascertain any long-term effects of pure diets, the beetles were reared on the same pure diet for several generations, or on different pure diets in different generations. The hypothesis that the larvae are primary omnivorous was tested. The evidence that the larvae of A. aenea are primary omnivorous was obtained by revealing that the larvae reared on the mixed diet of insects and seeds survived better, and developed faster in larger adults than those reared on the pure diets of seeds or insects. When the beetles were reared on the same pure diet for several generations, survivorship, and in most cases also the duration of development, did not change. However, when the beetles were reared on a different pure diet each generation, survi­ vorship significantly decreased in successive generations. By Ulrich Irmler & Stephan Giirlich Summary Although the rove beetle family is one of the most species rich insect families, it is ecologically rarely investigated. Little is known about the influence of environmental demands on the occurrence of the species. Thus, the present investigation aims to relate rove beetle assemblages and species to soil and forest parameters of Schleswig- Holstein (northern Germany). In the southernmost region of Schleswig-Holstein near Geesthacht, 65 sites were investigated by pitfall traps studying the relationship be­ tween the rove beetle fauna and the following environmental parameters: soil pH, organic matter content, habitat area and canopy cover. In total 265 rove beetle species have been recorded, and of these 69 are listed as endangered in Schleswig-Holstein. Four assemblages could be differentiated, but separation was weak. Wood area and canopy cover were significantly related with the rove beetle composition using a multivariate analysis. In particular, two assemblages of loosely wooded sites, or heath-like vegetation, were significantly differentiated from the densely forested assemblages by canopy cover and Corg-content of soil. Spearman analysis revealed significant results for only 30 species out of 80.

In this study, the occurrence and abundance of ground beetles were analysed according to habitat preference and dispersal ability. A total of 65 carabid species were found in the three green areas. Obviously, the high species richness of ground beetles in the greenery of the Lublin is determined by the mostly undeveloped floodplain of the river Bystrzyca. The species richness of carabids and their relative abundance decrease in the assemblage of green areas under the effect of isolation of green patches and fragmentation of the semi-natural landscape elements in the urban environment. Generalists and open-habitat species significantly prevailed in all green areas. The prevailing of riparian and forest species at floodplain sites of the river Bystrzyca demonstrated the existence of a connection of the carabid assemblage with landscape of river valley. The Saski Park and gully “Rury” are more influenced by urbanization (fragmentation, isolation of green patches) and recreation that is consistent with the significant prevalence of open-habitats species in the carabid beetle assemblage.
