  • A Metaphorical Analysis of John Mayer's Album Continuum By
Stop this Train: A Metaphorical Analysis of John Mayer’s Album Continuum by Joshua Beal A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree MASTER OF ARTS Major Subject: Communication West Texas A&M University Canyon, Texas August 2017 ABSTRACT John Mayer’s album Continuum is his third studio album and includes some of his best work. This analysis used a five-step metaphorical approach, as referenced to Ivie (1987), to understand the rhetorical invention of Mayer’s album Continuum and to interpret the metaphorical concepts employed by Mayer. This analysis discovered six tenors: Peace, Spirit, Darkness, Hope, Violence, and Cruelty and their accompanying vehicles. Rhetorical techniques in Mayer’s lyrics can be associated to references to nature, contrasting abstract with concrete terms, and the use of opposites (God/Devil terms). Continuum is an album that incorporates the trials and tribulations of romantic relationships using a combination of blues, soul, and contemporary pop music to underscore the lyrics. ii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to express my deepest gratitude to my thesis chair, Dr. Trudy Hanson, and her constant efforts to guide me through an adventure that I will never forget. This experience is as rewarding as it is special to me and I couldn’t have done this without you. I would also like to express my appreciation to the members of my committee, Dr. Jessica Mallard, and Randy Ray. My experience as a graduate student is an experience that I will cherish, and the memories I have collected are priceless. I would also like to express my gratitude to my parents, Raymond and Mary Laura Beal, and my brother, Austin Beal, for their continued support throughout this journey.

  • Billy Joel's Turn and Return to Classical Music Jie Fang Goh, MM
ABSTRACT Fantasies and Delusions: Billy Joel’s Turn and Return to Classical Music Jie Fang Goh, M.M. Mentor: Jean A. Boyd, Ph.D. In 2001, the release of Fantasies and Delusions officially announced Billy Joel’s remarkable career transition from popular songwriting to classical instrumental music composition. Representing Joel’s eclectic aesthetic that transcends genre, this album features a series of ten solo piano pieces that evoke a variety of musical styles, especially those coming from the Romantic tradition. A collaborative effort with classical pianist Hyung-ki Joo, Joel has mentioned that Fantasies and Delusions is the album closest to his heart and spirit. However, compared to Joel’s popular works, it has barely received any scholarly attention. Given this gap in musicological work on the album, this thesis focuses on the album’s content, creative process, and connection with Billy Joel’s life, career, and artistic identity. Through this thesis, I argue that Fantasies and Delusions is reflective of Joel’s artistic identity as an eclectic composer, a melodist, a Romantic, and a Piano Man. • The Music of Donny Hathaway Everything Is Everything Donny Hathaway, 1970
SUMPTUOUS SOUL: THE MUSIC OF DONNY HATHAWAY EVERYTHING IS EVERYTHING DONNY HATHAWAY, 1970 Keisha Hicks A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2014 Committee: Angela Nelson, Advisor Rebecca Mancuso, Graduate Faculty Representative Ellen Berry Radhika Gajjala © 2014 Keisha Hicks All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Angela Nelson, Advisor The song “This Christmas” by Donny Hathaway is played only once a year during the holiday season. His presence is so strong during the holidays for African Americans because he is one of the distinctive cultural markers of the season. The question at hand is why is he relegated to the Christmas season but what about the rest of the year. In 2010, National Public Radio (NPR) created the series 50 Great Voices as a way to expose NPR listeners to artists who were not at the forefront of public consciousness. On June 26, 2010 Donny Hathaway debuted as the “Neglected Heart of Soul” but does “neglected” hold up. I believe “neglected” becomes situational depending on who is doing the remembering. The objective of my dissertation is to locate Donny Hathaway as a central figure in 1970s Soul music, to understand his growing influence over contemporary artists, and his musical legacy. I used Stuart Hall’s “representation” as my overarching theoretical framework. I wanted a theory that would be fluid enough to be relevant in the different phases of Donny Hathaway’s musical career. By using representation I was able to identify and understand the musical influences on Donny Hathaway.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS In 1992, during my second year of college, I would occasionally tag along with Mike Kilian, a high school friend, to his Alpha Tau Omega parties just west of the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. Not knowing many people, I usually ended up watching the band. This is how I first heard and met Jack Ingram, a fledgling performer and SMU ATO. At the time, none of us could know Ingram was a harbinger of a generation of Texas musicians who, inspired by Robert Earl Keen, would lead a resurgence of interest in original, Texas country music, an echo of the progressive country of the music of Ingram’s, Kilian’s, and my childhood.

  • Heidemann Dissertation
Hearing Women’s Voices in Popular Song: Analyzing Sound and Identity in Country and Soul Kate Heidemann Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Kate Heidemann All rights reserved Abstract Hearing Women’s Voices in Popular Song: Analyzing Sound and Identity in Country and Soul Kate Heidemann In this study I combine music analysis with critical theory to investigate how different conceptions of feminine identity—intersecting with race and class—are materialized through recorded sound. I present interpretive analyses of four popular songs recorded and released between 1967 and 1974: “Baby, I Love You” by Aretha Franklin, “Fist City” by Loretta Lynn, “If I Were Your Woman” by Gladys Knight and the Pips, and “Jolene” by Dolly Parton. My analyses focus on vocal performance, and vocal quality (or timbre) in particular, as I investigate the means by which the sounds of these recordings participate in cultural discourse on gender, sexuality, race, and class. These songs narrate moments in sexual love relationships (the hope of new love or the threat of infidelity), while the performances of each vocalist, the studio musicians, and the work of engineers and producers combine to create representations of black and working-class femininity that express varying degrees of assertiveness and vulnerability in the face of unequal gender power relations. I compare and contextualize these sonic expressions of identity with the personas these vocalists presented in their professional and public lives, illustrating how these recordings participate in the construction of a multi-faceted and always- emergent history of American womanhood.
