The new Real Estate record, bass player says enthusiastically, turned out great. Sure, he’s 100% biased, but as the days counted down to the Feb. 28 release of “The Main Thing,” Bleeker wasn’t about to dial down his excitement. “I truly believe that this one, in our trajectory, will be a landmark,” said Bleeker, one of three Real Estate members raised in Ridgewood, New Jersey. “The Main Thing” is the indie five-piece band’s fifth album and first since 2017’s “In Mind.” It’s a watershed moment for a group that stopped what it was doing, looked back on more than 10 years of making music, and wondered out loud if playing in an indie band at their age was, well, the adult thing to do. “We felt the weight of the decade, and the fifth record,” Bleeker said, speaking by phone from his home in West Marin County, California. It took about a year to finish making "The Main Thing." The record was tracked, in stops and starts, at Marcata Recording just outside New Paltz, New York. A record release is always an exciting time for a band, but this moment’s probably got a little extra juice. Like Bleeker, , Real Estate’s frontman, chief songwriter and rhythm guitarist, couldn’t wait for “The Main Thing” to finally reach its audience. “I’ve never worked harder on a record,” said Courtney. “I’ve never put more of myself into a record. … It feels really special to me. You always want your record to come across as important or substantial, but this one in particular, it feels like a pivotal album for us. It felt that way when we were making it.” At 13 songs, “The Main Thing” is certainly the longest Real Estate record. “Paper Cup,” the teaser track released a few weeks ago, features the band’s first-ever female backing voice: Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso, who added harmonies. “Paper Cup” is a song, Courtney has said, about getting older, wondering if the music career he fell into more than a decade ago is still a suitable life’s work. The track's also a preview of a record that isn't supposed to sound like the same old Real Estate. Just the man to push the band. Courtney, who lives in Beacon, New York, is a married father of three. He carves out a day or two every week to work at the band’s rehearsal space in nearby Newburgh, New York, writing songs, tracking demos, or, when band members are able to gather in one place, shaping new material as a band. “A lot of what I’m talking about on this record is kind of second-guessing the idea of even being a musician,” said Courtney. “We’ve been a band for 10 years. My life has changed so much in the past 10 years. I’m a totally different person. I was just questioning whether it’s even a responsible thing to be in a band. The world has changed. It’s a darker place.” To find out what the future held, Real Estate sought assistance from a past collaborator. Longtime friend Kevin McMahon was brought on as producer. McMahon had served in that capacity for 2011’s “Days,” the band’s sophomore release. This time, a couple of early sessions in New Paltz convinced the band that he was the right man to guide them through album No. 5 (there's also been one EP). At first, Courtney said, he was concerned that McMahon, as a friend, would hesitate to push the band, at a time when it needed pushing. Happily, he recalled, “It kind of went the opposite way.” “There were almost like therapy sessions, of just sitting in the control room and talking for hours, about: What do we want out of this record? Where are we at in our careers? What are we doing this for? What are we hoping to achieve here?” The questions were obvious. So what were the answers? “The process of making this record was the answer for us,” said Bleeker. It became clear, he explained, that if Real Estate was going to keep on being a band, its five members had to care enough about its work to make sure it was done well. Shining moments for Lynch. Real Estate also includes drummer Jackson Pollis, Matthew Kallman on keyboards and Julian Lynch on lead guitar. (A former member Matt Mondanile, left the band in after being accused of sexual misconduct.) Lynch is the third side of the band’s Ridgewood connection; he joined in 2016, replacing Mondanile, and played on the previous album. But Lynch’s guitar work on “The Main Thing” is going to amaze Real Estate fans; at least that’s what Courtney and Bleeker promised. Songs like “Falling Down,” “Shallow Sun” and the title track showcase Lynch’s finely crafted solo parts. But his playing is a true hallmark of the record. That's not to say every tune will feel brand new for fans. Tracks, like “Friday” and “November,” have been heard at Real Estate live shows for more than a year. One thing “The Main Thing” doesn’t have, that the last three Real Estate albums did, is an Alex Bleeker song; one written and sung by the bass player. “It’s not something that absolutely needs to happen every time,” said Bleeker. The band worked on a couple of his tunes during the recording process, and one of them got reasonably close to finished. But, for whatever reason, the final song sequence was locked in without a Bleeker tune. Lynch did get one of his songs on “The Main Thing,” the swirling, layered “Also A But.” It’s more a kaleidoscope of sound than the usual Real Estate fare, and the vocals are muted in the mix. It’s the music he wants us to focus on, and there’s lots going on in the 5-minute, 24-second track. No other Real Estate record has any song like it. In April, Real Estate hits the road for its latest stretch of the tour. There’s a European leg that kicks off in June. In July, the band will play SummerStage in Central Park, on a bill with Sharon Van Etten. After that, more live dates in 2020 certainly wouldn’t be a surprise. The main thing, so to speak, is that Real Estate has a new record it’s proud of. Which means maybe, just maybe, making music as part of an indie rock band is the perfect way to make sense from a world that seems to make less and less sense every day. As Courtney said, “Maybe the more responsible thing is to be true to yourself, and to do what makes you happy. We were also talking about, what’s the point of art in a dark and dangerous world, in dark times? Wouldn’t it suck if every artist just quit making art because the world is too dark?” Real Estate Records.
