Vlaho Bukovac and My Search for His Paintings in England
VLAHO BUKOVAC AND MY SEARCH FOR HIS PAINTINGS IN ENGLAND It was in the late 1980s, after I had read the delightful autobiography by the painter Vlaho Bukovac, 1855 – 1922, published in Zagreb in 1918, that I realised that this important Croatian artist had found “home from home” in North Yorkshire, just as I had done in the small town of Bedale, my late husband's family home. Harrogate, where Samson Fox, 1838 – 1903, one of Vlaho's most important collectors in England lived, was only a matter of miles away from Bedale, a drive of less than an hour. Harrogate was then, and still is today, a lively spa town, where people came to drink sulphur waters for their health, to spend a holiday, to enjoy themselves, to make friends, to see exhibitions and to go to the theatre. The famous Royal Pump Room, now a museum, was a place to meet. Samson Fox, the ancestor of the present day well known acting family, Edward, Robert, James, Emilia Fox, to mention just a few, was a self-made engineer and a clever business man, who had invented an important part for the engines of steamships and had thus become very wealthy himself. He had been elected three times the Mayor of Harrogate, never repeated since, owing to his good works and generosity to many causes. His bust, by Prince Victor von Hohenlohe-Langenborg, still graces the corridors of the Royal College of Music in London. Fox had donated £45,000, a very large amount at the time, for the building of the College in 1894. -

DUBROVAČKI SLOVINAC U KONTEKSTU HRVATSKOG REALIZMA A n t u n P a v e š k o v i ć Časopis »Slovinac« počeo je izlaziti u Dubrovniku 1. svibnja 1878. godine. Spomenuta fusnota, smišljena kao svojevrsna emendacija uvodnom Pozdravu i poklonu, najavljuje ujedno i prijepore izazvane u hrvatskome kulturnom prostoru ideologijskom pozadinom cijeloga projekta. -

Jelica Stojanović THE DEVELOPMENT PATH OF THE SERBIAN LANGUAGE AND SCRIPT Podgorica 2020 MILOš KOVAčEVIć THE DEVELOPMENT PATH OF THE SERBIAN LANGUAGE AND SCRIPT, MADE UP OF STRAY PATHS Only two years have passed from the two hundredth anni- versary of the beginning of Vuk Karadžić’s struggle for “intro- ducing the folk language in literature”, that is to say, from the introduction of the Serbian folk language in the Serbian literary language, or to put it in the more modern phrasing of today: the standard language. The beginning of that struggle is connected to the year 1814, when, in the royal city of Vienna, Vuk’s first grammar book came out: The Orthography of the Serbian Lan- guage Based on the Speech of the Common Folk, which dealt with resolving the three most important standard-related issues: a) the issue of the Serbian orthography, b) the issue of the morpho- logical structure of the Serbian language, and c) the issue of the name of the language and its national boundaries. Rare are the languages, if, indeed, there are any, which have had such a turbulent history of two hundred years. The histor- ical development of a language can be followed at two histor- ical levels: that of its internal and that of its external history. -
Gundulići Vlaha Bukovca
Tatjana Juki ć [email protected] Ilirizam i tuma čenje snova: Gunduli ći Vlaha Bukovca ABSTRACT . Juki ć Tatjana, Ilirizam i tuma čenje snova: Gunduli ći Vlaha Bukovca (The Illyrian movement and the interpretation of dreams: Ivan Gunduli ć in the paintings of Vlaho Bukovac). „Pozna ńskie Studia Slawistyczne” 2. Pozna ń 2012. Adam Mickiewicz University Press, pp. 189–211. ISBN 978-83-232-2409-9. ISSN 2084-3011. Given the prominent position in the Croatian cultural imagination of Vlaho Bukovac’s 1895 painting of the Illyrian Movement, this article argues that the later accounts of early to mid- 19 th-century Illyrian politics and literature remain contaminated, and structurally so, by Bukovac’s treatment of the visual. This visual contaminant then points to more general political and cultural practices in Austria-Hungary at the time, including psychoanalysis, not least where psychoanalysis addresses the scope of image and the phantasmatic. Analyzing three paintings where Bukovac takes up the subject of literature cum the phantasmatic along- side Freud’s 1908 study of „Der Dichter und das Phantasieren”, I propose that in both litera- ture serves to indicate the political logic of metonymy or the metonymic logic of the poli- tical; furthermore, I show that Freud, unlike Bukovac, fails to sustain this logic precisely in places where he sets out to classify wishes. Keywords: the Illyrian movement, psychoanalysis, metonymy, painting, literature „Hrvatski preporod” Vlaha Bukovca iz 1895. godine pripada me ñu slike koje su obilježile imaginarij dvadesetog stolje ća za hrvatsku kulturnu povijest 1. -

THE ESSENCE OF KONAVLE – CULTURAL ITINERARY DAY 1. CAVTAT First day is entirely designed for Cavtat. 1. House Bukovac - The birth house of Vlaho Bukovac, one of the most famous Croatian painters and the forefather of the Croatian modern painting, has been made available for public in May 2004, after a ten-year break and a thorough three-year reconstruction. The monumental features of the Bukovac House are not only its architecture, garden space and the location in the very heart of the town, but above all, it is the legacy of the name of the great artist, his artistic heritage and the heritage of his family's history. www.kuca-bukovac.hr E-mail: [email protected] 2. Mausoleum of Račić family – The mausoleum of the well-known ship-owners family Račić from Cavtat was built on St. Rock's cemetery by well-known Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović (1883-1962). Its construction took place in 1921, on the place of St. Rock's church from 15th century, following the will of the testatrix Marija Račić. It was built from the white stone from Brač island in the form of cupola. In the whole building no other material but stone was used, except bronze for the door, bell and angel. On the bell founded by Meštrović's design we find his beautiful reflection: "Comprehend the secret of love, you will solve the secret of death and believe that the life is eternal. www.migk.hr/hr/ E-mail: [email protected] 3. -

Montenegro - Split Cruising Guide Montenegro to Kotor
Montenegro - Split Cruising Guide Montenegro to Kotor Day 1 - 8nm (35 mins) Located on a beautiful bay on the coast of Montenegro, Kotor is a city steeped in tradition and history, with remarkable scenic views. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the old city was built between the 12th and 14th centuries and is filled with medieval architecture and historic monuments. Extending over four kilometres, the city walls that have protected Kotor for centuries lead up to the fortress of Saint Ivan. Wedged between brooding mountains and a moody corner of the bay, this dramatically beautiful town is perfectly at one with its setting. Its sturdy walls – started in the 9th century and tweaked until the 18th – arch steeply up the slopes behind it. From a distance they’re barely discernible from the mountain’s grey hide, but at night they’re spectacularly lit, reflecting in the water to give the town a golden halo. Within those walls lie labyrinthine marbled lanes where churches, shops, bars and restaurants surprise you on hidden piazzas. www.yachtmasters.com Kotor to Cavtat Many of the main events and festivals in Alaska tends to centre Day 2 - 35nm (2hrs 30 mins) Cavtat is a small and attractive town set amongst trees. Ancient remains, Renaissance palaces and villas make up the historical nucleus of Cavtat, a town south of Dubrovnik. In ancient times it was known as Epidaurum and today is the tourist and cultural center of Konavle, the southernmost region of Croatia. Visit the house of Vlaho Bukovac, a famous artist and see his collection of paintings and artwork. -
