These critical ecosystems are under increasing pressure from human activities, and conceiving success- ful management strategies to ensure their persistence and/or recovery is of paramount impor- tance. Currently, ecosystems dominated by large seaweeds are referred to as either ‘forests’ or ‘beds’. We demonstrate how this dual terminology is confusing, is used inconsistently, and reduces the efficiency of communication about the importance and perils of seaweed habitats. As a conse- quence, it undermines work to alleviate and mitigate their loss and impedes research on unifying principles in ecology. We conclude that there are clear benefits of simply using the more intuitive term ‘forest’ to describe all seascapes dominated by habitat-forming seaweeds. This is particularly true as researchers scramble to reconcile ecological functions and patterns of change across dis- parate regions and species to match the increasingly global scale of environmental forcing on these critical ecosystems. The first six months found Perth in Central American waters, mainly engaged in the dual task of protecting trade — especially the important tanker traffic in the Caribbean—and preventin g the escape of German merchant ships sheltering in neutral ports of th e islands and the Isthmus . Last of the three expansion-program cruiser s acquired from Britain, she had commissioned at Portsmouth on the 29th June 1939 as H .M.A. Ship under "Fighting Freddie " Farncomb, a studious , coolly-efficient officer whose nickname, bestowed during the war, reflected the confidence and esteem of the lower deck . Perth sailed from Portsmouth on the 26th July for Australia via th e Panama Canal, and reached New York, where she represented Australi a at the World Fair, on the 4th August. On the 21st of the month, after twelve days of American hospitality, she arrived at Kingston, Jamaica, an d was to have sailed for Panama on the 23rd, but in the early morning o f that date Farncomb received a signal sent to the Admiralty by the Com- mander-in-Chief, America and West Indies—Vice-Admiral Meyrick' — asking that Perth might remain on the station . Farncomb thereupon can- celled his sailing arrangements, thus anticipating an Admiralty signa l received later in the day directing him to "return Kingston and awai t further orders " . -

THE AUSTRALIAN NAVAL ARCHITECT Volume 22 Number 3 August 2018 HMAS Adelaide preparing to embark United States Marine Corps amphibious assault vehicles during Exercise Rim of the Pacific 18 (RIMPAC 2018), Hawaii, in July. HMAS Adelaide unexpectedly took a lead role in the amphibious phase of RIMPAC when the US Navy assault ship planned for that role suffered mechanical problems and remained in Pearl Harbour for most of the exercise. HMAS Adelaide led HMA Ships Success, Melbourne and Toowoomba across the Pacific to take part in this major exercise which involved 25 nations, 46 surface ships, five submarines, 17 land forces, and more than 200 aircraft and 25 000 personnel. (Tony Prescott) INTRODUCTION The popular image of the Manly ferry during the present century has very much evolved around the "class" (to use a naval term loosely) of six very similar double-ended screw steamers built for the Port Jackson Co-operative Steamship Co. Ltd. and the Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Co. Ltd. between 1905 and 1922. These six steamers were to be eclipsed in size, speed, accommodation and glamour by the Scottish-built Dee Why and Curl Curl of 1928 (The Log, May 1977) and South Steyne of 1938 (The Log, August 1983, November 1983). However, the smaller boats were to prove more economically practical in the long-term and two of them, both to be described in this article, are still in service while the Scottish boats have been withdrawn. Up to the early years of this century, the Port Jackson company operated a fleet consisting almost entirely of paddle steamers. The reason for the relatively late transition to screw propulsion lay in the necessity of using double-ended ships due to the configuration of Sydney Harbour with its many coves and the difficulties of turning in the Circular Quay terminus. Smaller double-ended ferries had been found to operate quite successfully with screw propulsion, but the Manly service had speed and heavy weather requirements which necessitated fine bows on the ships. -

www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Substantial blue carbon in overlooked Australian kelp forests Karen Filbee‑Dexter1,2 & Thomas Wernberg1,2,3* Recognition of the potential for vegetated coastal ecosystems to store and sequester carbon has led to their increasing inclusion into global carbon budgets and carbon ofset schemes. However, kelp forests have been overlooked in evaluations of this ‘blue carbon’, which have been limited to tidal marshes, mangrove forests, and seagrass beds. We determined the continental-scale contribution to blue carbon from kelp forests in Australia using areal extent, biomass, and productivity measures from across the entire Great Southern Reef. We reveal that these kelp forests represent 10.3–22.7 Tg C and contribute 1.3–2.8 Tg C year−1 in sequestered production, amounting to more than 30% of total blue carbon stored and sequestered around the Australian continent, and ~ 3% of the total global blue carbon. We conclude that the omission of kelp forests from blue carbon assessments signifcantly underestimates the carbon storage and sequestration potential from vegetated coastal ecosystems globally. Te rapidly changing climate provides a strong impetus to uncover sinks in the global carbon cycle, in order to identify possible ways to mitigate current carbon emissions1,2. Vegetated coastal ecosystems store and sequester large amounts of organic carbon globally3–5, and this recognition has recently led to their recent inclusion into global carbon budgets and carbon ofset schemes6. Current accounting for this ‘blue carbon’ is restricted to veg- etation in accreting coastal ecosystems, such as tidal marshes, mangrove forests, and seagrass beds, which have high internal carbon burial rates and accumulate carbon in their soils and sediments. -

our world-underwater scholarship society ® 47th Annual Awards Program – June 3 - 5, 2021 Welcome to the 47th anniversary celebration of the Our World-Underwater Scholarship Society®. It has always been a great pleasure for me as president of the Society to bring the “family” together each year in New York City, so of course it is with great disappointment that for the second year we are unable to do so. A year ago, as the pandemic was beginning to spread throughout the world, the board of directors made the difficult decision to put all scholarship and internship activities on hold. 2020 was the first time in the Society’s history that we did not put Scholars or Interns in the field. But there is good news – the Society has new energy and is working with our hosts and sponsors to safely get our incoming 2021 Scholars and Interns started on their journeys. We bring three new Rolex Scholars and five new interns into our family for a total of 103 Rolex Scholars and 107 interns since the inception of the Society, and all of this has been accomplished by our all-volunteer organization. Forty-seven years of volunteers have been selfless in their efforts serving as directors, officers, committee members, coordinators, and technical advisors all motivated to support the Society’s mission “to promote educational activities associated with the underwater world.” None of this would have been possible without the incredible support by the Society’s many organizational partners and corporate sponsors throughout the years. The one constant in the Society’s evolution has been Rolex which continues to support the Society as part of its Perpetual Planet Initiative. -
