The handsome mnsian is pleasantly situated on a lofty eminencein well woodedgroundf3, with about two hundred acre5 of Parkland, The family owns in addition lands at Kirkheaton, Kirkburton, Mirfield and Crosslands, Yorks. These eatates have been held by the Beaumonts from the days of Henry 11 in-the twelfth century, until the present time, Kirkheaton is two and a half miles from Huddersfield. The north aisle of the choir of the church belongs to, and is the usual burial placeof the family. WILLIAM DE BELLOMONTE, who died circ, 1218; may possibly have 'been descended from William,brother of Robert andHenry, who came over withthe Oonqueror (Bee p. 7). He seems to have been the first of,the familyto own lands in Yorkshire. He held one eighth partof r?. Knight's fee of the honour of John, Earl of Lincoln circ. 1205, who granted him land at Whitley (CL3SE R3LLS). He received from Rogerde Laoi, Constable of Chester and Lord of Pontefract about A.D. 1206, twelvo Bovatea of land In Huddersfield, on condition that he supplied escortsfor Roger's despatchas, whichthe latter sent from time to time between his castles at Halton in Cheshire and Pontefract (T.D. Whitaker Loidis and Elmete p. 347). He accompanied Richard I on the third Crusade in 1191 and was at the Siege 01. Acrs. In 1195 he witnessed certain deeds relating to a transfer of la.ld to William son of Falk, who was Roger de Laci's Marshsl, he also witnessed the foundation dead of Mountjoy Priory. He went to Normandy in 1204/6 and took part in the fruitless campaign which Fesulted in the loss of the Duohy. In those days there seems to have been "8 restriction rent act" similar to that in England during the late great luropean War, for we find thst King John sent an order to the Sheriff of York "to respi5e Will.iam de Bellomonte from the paymentof 10 marks which he owed to the Jews in that city, and to free him fromthe interest ofthe debt, as long as he should remain beyond sea with horses and arms in the King's service, given at Northampton 23rd May 1205. The Operations of the Military Service Tribunals in the East Central Division of the West Riding of Yorkshire and those of the Military Service Boards in New Zealand, 1916-1918 A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History at Massey University David Littlewood 2015 i Abstract The Military Service Acts that implemented conscription in Great Britain and New Zealand during 1916 permitted appeals for exemption to a Military Service Tribunal or Military Service Board respectively. Although claims lodged on the grounds of hardship or occupation were by far the most common, historians have overwhelmingly focused on that distinct minority of individuals who cited conscientious objections. Furthermore, there has been no attempt to compare the structure, or the workings, of the exemption systems in these two countries. By employing a ‘British World’ approach, this thesis compares the operations of the Tribunals in the East Central Division of the West Riding of Yorkshire with those of the Boards across New Zealand. It investigates the relationship between the appeal bodies and their respective governments and militaries, to assess how far each claim was judged on its merits.
