Your FREE MAGAZINE for Kirkheaton, Upper Heaton, Gawthorpe, Bog Green, Briggate, Houses Hill, Wellhouse ISSUE 22 & Lascelles Hall NEWS AUTUMN 2018 Kirkheaton PO on the move! After over twenty five years as postmasters at Kirkheaton Post Office on St Mary’s Lane, Lynn and Michael Whitehouse are preparing to stick their last stamps, weigh their last parcels, close the PO and retire. Fortunately, Kirkheaton is not losing its PO. If all goes to plan it will relocate to the newsagents at the corner of Shop Lane and Town Road in the near future. However, this has caused some concern among residents as parking and pedestrian access are serious issues in the area. But on the plus side it will have two Bumper open counters and will be open for longer hours six and half days a week. Various other venues were considered but have issue! had to be discounted for varying reasons. NCS SUCCESS Michael became postmaster in April 1998 after a career as a mining surveyor. He commented “ When Margaret Thatcher THIRTY YEARS ON! closed down all the pits, my job disappeared, so I did what I always fancied doing - run a PO - which I’ve really enjoyed.” DALTON WARD During his 25 years at the job he has seen many changes. WEEKEND “Business has changed. At one time there were OAP’s queuing out of the door to collect their money on pension days. All that has gone now as pensions are paid directly into bank accounts. The government has also moved many of its services online so many people no longer renew their car tax or buy their TV licences etc at the PO. Now much of his custom comes from people trading on Ebay and, with the demise of local branch offices, bank customers increasingly use the PO for their banking services. Michael and Lynn are moving to sunny Blackpool but hope to spend much of their time at their apartment in Portugal. They have supported many community initiatives over the years and will be greatly missed. We wish them well in their retirement.

Sad loss of Dr George Redmonds – local historian

On 10 August, aged 82, George Redmonds sadly passed away after a short illness. He was an internationally recognised historian, specialising in the origin of surnames and place names. He was awarded a PhD at Leicester University in 1970 for his research into surnames of the West Riding, and in 1973 his work was published as the first volume of the English Surnames series. A resident of Lepton, near , he gave up his job as a senior lecturer at the town’s Polytechnic to become a freelance historian in 1974, earning a living through his local history publications. Nine teams including players, parents and coaches from the Under 6’s to the Under 17’s took part on a very hot Sunday morning in July. Over 50 walkers set off from various locations including , , Cumberworth, Scissett, , Hepworth, Northowram, Greetland and . The challenge was to be the first team back to the football ground, with each age group covering nearly 10 miles. Along each route teams also had specific challenges and tasks to complete, including group selfies at specific landmarks, answering local knowledge questions, and a favourite of each team - a drink at a local pub! On returning to their football ground at Bankfield Lane they were met by supporters to enjoy an afternoon of entertainment together with a well-earned drink and BBQ. The walk raised a massive £3500 in sponsorship and KFC would like to thank everyone who sponsored the walkers, the volunteers who helped organise the event, everyone who helped on the day, and everyone who attended. They also hosted their 4th Annual Football Gala in September. Thirty teams attended from all over West . Thanks to their support and all the hard work of the volunteers the club raised around £2,500. Kirkheaton had a number of teams in all age groups with the U10’s as trophy winners in their league. The £6000 raised from these two events will go towards plans to build a permanent club house and equipment for Kirkheaton Youth Football.

If you would like to know more about the club and how you and your children can get involved email: [email protected] All new players welcome. 3 FIRST AID, FOOD SAFETY, HEALTH AND SAFETY FRANK PEXTON COURSES DRAPER AND OUTFITTER The front of this property in Shop Lane has probably changed little in the last 100 years. Recently the remaining 22 metal framed windows in the Community Centre (CC) were replaced by Heritage Grey PVC ones - Thanks go to Suez and Bradley Waste Management for their financial support. We also have to thank Kirkburton Parish Council and Huddersfield Common Good Trust for their financial help which has enabled us to remove the old school toilets and refurbish them as a small meeting room and a much needed storage room. In addition the small community room has been smartened up by a new carpet. Kirkheaton Matters – new Facebook group for all Nigel Harnell, who created the group writes:- ‘As a lot of you are aware there is a new group on Facebook called Kirkheaton Matters - which has already reunited a few lost pets, gained business for business owners in Kirkheaton and just recently got a misplaced birthday card to a lady called Mavis. As I moved from to this lovely village I looked on Facebook thinking there would be a group for the area. It didn’t, so I decided to start one and it already has over 600 members. All in all it’s a great idea to bring the community together and is a kind of a neighbourhood watch in this digital age. Let hope for its continuing success’.

What does the Dalton ward mean to you? Question: People representing groups in the Dalton Ward meet every few months but often don’t know each other. How could we change things? Answer: Get them together for a ‘Getting to Know You’ weekend. With the help of Northern College [also known as Wentworth Castle, Barnsley], who hosted the weekend away, a good mix of eighteen adults consisting of volunteers, paid workers, Councillors and 6 children, recently enjoyed meeting up with other people from the ward. Lorna Idle from Kirkheaton writes: “This gave us the opportunity and time to find out more about each other, what we did in our communities and enabled us to investigate how we could work together to make the Dalton Ward (of which Kirkheaton is a part) a better place to live and work for ourselves and our families. Thanks to the children’s centre on site, parents were able to fully participate in these discussions which covered: safety, funding, resources – both buildings and people - and plans for our future. People enjoyed it so much there was talk of making it an annual event – but who knows – Watch this space!”

Note: Individuals over the age of 18 years are able to visit the College and enjoy the many courses – educational, general and social. Many courses are free of charge including your accommodation. Take a look at their website to find out more: https://www.northern.ac.uk/contact-us/

A plea from a local Community First Responder working at night with Yorkshire Ambulance Service:

“Can I please ask a question you may not even think about... DO YOU HAVE A HOUSE NUMBER ON YOUR HOUSE? CAN IT BE SEEN CLEARLY FROM THE ROAD SIDE? Please, please think about this! Valuable minutes can be lost by us and the ambulance service on just trying to find your house!”

8 Thirty Years On – Crowther Cup memories! A stalwart supporter writes: On a gloriously hot day, 5th August 1988 I was persuaded, along with other loyal families and friends, to go along to Ossett Cricket Club to support Kirkheaton 2nd team play Liversedge in the Crowther Cup final. We were armed with seats, picnics and one sun hat between four of us. The Kirkheaton team arrived, looking like professionals in suits and ties whilst Liversedge turned up in casual dress. Were Kirkheaton out to impress or demoralise?? Liversedge opted to bat first and Kirkheaton had a difficult start when our opening fast bowler, Mark Carroll slid several yards when delivering his first bowl and was taken off after completing the first over – shaken but not stirred. Mark was later brought back on, scored 31 not out and was voted ‘Man of the Match.’ This was a low scoring game. Opening batsman Gareth Morris was out for 45 at a crucial point. Liversedge were in a strong position at 74 – 0 when Stuart Sykes took a magnificent caught and bowled which changed the pace of the game. The sun streamed down, the crowd were frazzled and the heat and energy on the pitch was reaching boiling point. Glenn Roberts, then aged 14 years scored 14 and 3 for 49. The game had reached knife edge when Charlie Wilkinson hit a 6 on the last bowl of the match and the game was ours. Players and supporters returned to Kirkheaton victorious to celebrate into the night. Exactly thirty years later, 5th August 2018, the team were reunited at Kirkheaton CC to relive and reminisce the glory days. After 7 hours drinking and talking they probably went home today as weary as they did 30 years ago. A good time was had by all.

10 Kirkheaton Future update Steve Booth Chair of KF writes: Kirkheaton Future continues to act on your behalf to develop the Neighbourhood Plan for the village. We are busy with the task of writing the policies that will form the bulk of the plan. These are taking a bit more time than we thought as our initial timing plan has proven to be a tad ambitious. We have submitted an application for funding so that we can produce the plan in a brochure format for distribution around the village. We also need some of this funding to organise a referendum so that everyone in the village will have a chance to comment on the plan before its final submission to . Representatives of KF attended the recent public review of the larger plan that Kirklees have developed; the result of this review is eagerly anticipated and we expect that some of our comments and suggestions will have been taken into account. We hope that by the next magazine we will be able to report that the plan is nearing completion and ready for initial review. In the meantime if anyone has any question about the work of KF or the plan itself then please contact me at [email protected]

Library chatter

Following the Library Consultation earlier this year, Kirklees now acknowledges how important local libraries are to communities and that they are not just about books. We know Kirkheaton is vulnerable as it is the smallest library in Kirklees but now it is expected that a strong case can be made for retaining it as there will be a local plan for each area to reflect their differing needs.

Cllr Graham Turner, Cabinet Member with responsibility for libraries, said: “We know that libraries are more than books and buildings; they are also friends, technology, learning and community and it is with that in mind that we will move forward in developing local plans for each area.” The council also agreed to look into the feasibility of axing book fines.

Friends of Kirkheaton Library [FOKL] are organising two exciting activities this November: Friday 2nd November 4-30 to 6-00pm Bat Hunt! Explore the local area and hunt for bats with our special detectors that capture bat sounds. The walk will finish with a spine-chilling story outdoors. Bring a torch and wear weather-appropriate clothing. Ages 5+ Saturday 24th November10.30 – 12.30. Come along to Kirkheaton Library to celebrate Dr Who Day. Dress up as The Doctor and come and design your very own Tardis. Prize for the best dressed Doctor.
