Fiona. The Reds. If you’re from around here, these things mean something. They are part of our collective past and our imagined future. But there’s one icon that towers above the rest. When it comes to civic pride, local history and creative innovation, nothing beats King Records. Five years ago, we asked our associate artist KJ Sanchez to create a new theatre piece about the history and legacy of the historic recording studio. Together with a small team of volunteers, she interviewed dozens of people with some connection to the King Records story: fans, music historians, relatives of the key figures and today’s living legends — the musicians themselves. Since then, we’ve done several readings of the script-in-progress, as well as a “concert staging” in Washington Park featuring live music and an onstage interview with legendary King drummer, Philip Paul. What started out as a piece of documentary theatre has blossomed into a fully grown musical that celebrates Cincinnati while examining music, race and the human stories behind the King mystique. Welcome to Cincinnati King! In the Marx Theatre, we’re thrilled to bring you a confection of a play. It’s an imagined sequel to Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice called Miss Bennet: Christmas at Pemberley. Written by the witty collaborators Lauren Gunderson and Margot Malcon, this play picks up where P&P left off. Elizabeth and Darcy, newly married, invite the family to join them for the holiday when, much to her surprise, middle sister Mary gets her chance at romance and happiness! This inventive comedy, written in the style of Austen with a wink to contemporary sensibilities, will delight Austen devotees and new admirers alike. Many thanks to our own Leading Ladies — a devoted group of arts-minded community leaders — for sponsoring this production. Finally, we want to draw your attention to the latest offering of our Off the Hill touring series — a family-friendly adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. This delightful production tours community centers across the Tristate region through November 2. Please visit our website for a complete listing of venues and dates. As always, thank you for your loyalty and extraordinary support! DOCUMENT RESUME ED 435 403 IR 057 553 AUTHOR Halliday, Blane TITLE An Examination of Essential Popular Music Compact Disc Holdings at the Cleveland Public Library. DESCRIPTORS *Audiodisks; Discographies; *Library Collection Development; *Library Collections; *Optical Disks; *Popular Music; *Public Libraries; Research Libraries; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS *Cleveland Public Library OH ABSTRACT In the 1970s and early 1980s, a few library researchers and scholars made a case for the importance of public libraries' acquisition of popular music, particularly rock music sound recordings. Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.

Musicians: George Harrison – lead vocal, lead guitar; John Lennon – backing vocal, rhythm guitar; Paul McCartney – backing vocal, bass guitar; Ringo Starr – drums, loose-skinned Arabian bongo drum This was completed in four takes at their first-ever Sunday session. It was a bit of a formula song, said Paul. We knew that in E if you went to an A-flat minor, you could always make a song with those chords; that change pretty much always excited you. This is one of these. We wouldn’t have actually wanted to sing it though, because it was a bit… The ones that pandered to the fans in truth were our least favorite songs but they were good.
