Sunday, August 5 SUGAR IN MY BOWL ROOTS & BRANCHES 09 Detroit radio legend Ernie Durham—The Frantic One, retired from years of service to WJLB Radio, initiated a new program series at WDET-FM, Public Radio in Detroit, on Saturday, July 7, 1991, replacing the Blue Sensations show produced by John Sinclair every Saturday night from midnight to 2:00 am, immediately preceding Blues & Music After Hours with Famous Coachman. A box of cassettes containing the first 20 Ernie Durham shows on WDET was discovered in 2009 by Frank Bach in his garage on the east side of Detroit and the tapes were digitally transferred and edited for broadcast by John Sinclair for Radio Free Amsterdam and Detroit Life Radio.     April 3, 2021 OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE MARGIE EVANS, ICONIC AND SOPHISTICATED QUEEN OF THE BLUES, DIES AT 81 Dateline: Shreveport, Louisiana, April 3, 2021 Margie Evans, a legendary, international Blues and Gospel entertainer, songwriter, music producer, actress, music historian, community activist and motivational spokeswoman, who broke barriers for African American female Blues performers with poise, dignity and sophistication, died on March 19, 2021. In addition to her musicianship, Evans is noted as an activist for parity in music education as well as a promoter of the legacy of Blues music. As she often said, “I’ve been around a long time and I’ve really paid my dues.” She was age of eighty-one. A family statement did not reveal the cause of death. The lengthy career of the unsung, effervescent entertainer is chronicled in her first biographical memoir, “Margie Evans: The Classy, Sophisticated Queen of the Blues, due for release on Amazon in two weeks. In all of her endeavors, Evans embodied African American women of courage, faith and wisdom who demanded respect. In each of her acting roles, radio commercials, iconic albums and international tours, she represented complex, decisive women, articulating a profound grace, depth, perseverance and dignity in each of her performances. Marjorie Ann Johnson was born in 1939 in Shreveport, Louisiana, in the United States. She chose to be known as Margie. Raised as a devout Christian, Margie Evans’ early exposure to music was through gospel, inspired by her mother, Mrs. Veva Williams, who taught Latin and piano. After graduating from Grambling College, majoring in elementary education, in 1958, Margie moved to Los Angeles, where she later married her longtime friend and neighbor, Rev.

    CifuJazz Discografía de BLUE NOTE Records Colección particular de Juan Claudio Cifuentes Introducción Sin duda uno de los sellos verdaderamente históricos del jazz, Blue Note nació en 1939 de la mano de Alfred Lion y Max Margulis. El primero era un alemán que se había aficionado al jazz en su país y que, una vez establecido en Nueva York en el 37, no tardaría mucho en empezar a grabar a músicos de boogie woogie como Meade Lux Lewis y Albert Ammons. The Sammy Strain Story—Part 3 The Imperials (1961—1963) by Charlie Horner With contributions from Pamela Horner After a more than three very successful years on George Goldner’s End label, Little Anthony & the Impe- rials broke up in 1961. Most of those three years had been spent under the mentorship of Richard Barrett; ever since 1957 when as the Chesters, Barrett had res- cued them from the clutches of Apollo Records. But as the smoke cleared from the payola hearings in 1961, it was clear that the music industry was changing. By 1961, Richard Barrett was an independent producer and was distancing himself from George Goldner and Morris Levy of End/Roulette Records. Without Barrett’s lead- ership, the Imperials came apart. [For the early story of Little Anthony & The Imperials, see Echoes of the Past, Issue #82, 2007] Imperials’ Little Anthony Gourdine went solo, remaining with Roulette Records. Nate Rogers was drafted into the service and Tracey Lord left to get married. Ernest Wright and Clarence Collins wanted to continue singing as the Imperials so they went to their mentor, Richard Barrett to help keep the group going. The Imperials, 1961.
