Star Shines at Shell
May 24, 2014 Star Shines at Shell PHOTO BY YOSHI JAMES Homage to cult band’s “Third” kicks off Levitt series By Bob Mehr The Levitt Shell’s 2014 summer season opened Friday night, with a teeming crowd of roughly 4,000 who camped out under clear skies to hear the music of Memphis’ greatest cult band Big Star, in a show dedicated to its dark masterpiece, Third. Performed by an all-star troupe of local and national musicians, it was yet another reminder of how the group, critically acclaimed but commercially doomed during their initial run in the early 1970s, has developed into one of the unlikeliest success stories in rock and roll. The Third album — alternately known as Sister Lovers — was originally recorded at Midtown’s Ardent Studios in the mid-’70s, but vexed the music industry at the time, and was given a belated, minor indie-label release at the end of the decade. However, the music and myth of Third would grow exponentially in the decades to come. When it was finally issued on CD in the early ’90s, the record was hailed by Rolling Stone as an “untidy masterpiece ... beautiful and disturbing, pristine and unkempt — and vehemently original.” 1 North Carolina musician Chris Stamey had long been enamored of the record and the idea of recreating the Third album (along with full string arrangements) live on stage. He was close to realizing a version of the show with a reunited, latter- day Big Star lineup, when the band’s camp suffered a series of losses: first, with the passing of Third producer Jim Dickinson in 2009, and then the PHOTO BY YALONDA M. -

Roosevelt Sykes' "Sweet Old Chicago" (Imperial Records 5347, 1954) ebenfalls, ist aber in New Orleans aufgenommen. -

It was the key to distributing the Grande postcards on the street and in schools. Volunteers, mostly high-school-aged kids, would get a stack of cards to pass out, plus a free pass to the Grande for themselves. Russ Gibb, who ran the Grande Ballroom, says that this was the ticket, so to speak, to bring in the crowds. While posters in Detroit did not have the effect that posters in San Francisco had, and handbills were only somewhat better, the cards turned out to actually work best. These cards are quite rare. Bob Corritore Bio
Bob Corritore Bio Bob Corritore is one of the most active and highly regarded blues harmonica players on the scene today. His style passionately carries forward the old school of playing that Corritore learned as a young man directly from many of original pioneers of Chicago Blues. His sympathetic, yet fiery harmonica playing is featured on over 25 releases to date, on labels such as HighTone, HMG, Blue Witch, Blind Pig, Earwig, Putumayo, Random Chance, and the VizzTone Label Group. Many of these acclaimed releases have been nominated for various Handy, Grammy, and Blues Music Awards. Bob is also widely recognized for his many roles in the blues, as band leader, club owner, record producer, radio show host, arts foundation founder, and occasional writer. His amazing website www.bobcorritore.com and his weekly e-newsletter reflect a life thoroughly invested in the blues. Born on September 27, 1956 in Chicago, Bob first heard Muddy Waters on the radio at age 12, an event which changed his life forever. Within a year, he was playing harmonica and collecting blues albums. He would see blues shows in his early teens, including attending a Muddy Waters performance at his high school gymnasium. He would cut his teeth sitting in with John Henry Davis on Maxwell Street until he was old enough to sneak into blues clubs. He hung around great harp players such as Big Walter Horton, Little Mack Simmons, Louis Myers, Junior Wells, Big John Wrencher, and Carey Bell, and received harmonica tips and encouragement from many of them. He would regularly see the Aces, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Billy Boy Arnold, John Brim, Sunnyland Slim, Smokey Smothers, Eddie Taylor, and in many cases became personal friends with these blues veterans. -

Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates. -
