Leonard Cohen in French Culture: a Song of Love and Hate
The Journal of Specialised Translation Issue 29 – January 2018 Leonard Cohen in French culture: A song of love and hate. A comparison between musical and literary translation Francis Mus, University of Liège and University of Leuven ABSTRACT Since his comeback on stage in 2008, Leonard Cohen (1934-2016) has been portrayed in the surprisingly monolithic image of a singer-songwriter who broke through in the ‘60s and whose works have been increasingly categorised as ‘classics’. In this article, I will examine his trajectory through several cultural systems, i.e. his entrance into both the French literary and musical systems in the late ‘60s and early ’70s. This is an example of mediation brought about by both individual people and institutions in both the source and target cultures. Cohen’s texts do not only migrate between geo-politically defined source and target cultures (Canada and France), but also between institutionally defined musical and literary systems within one single geo-political context (France). All his musical albums were reviewed and distributed there soon after their release and almost his entire body of literary works (novels and poetry collections) has been translated into French. Nevertheless, Cohen’s reception has never been univocal, either in terms of the representation of the artist or in terms of the evaluation of his works, as this article concludes. KEYWORDS Leonard Cohen, cultural transfer, musical translation, retranslation, ambivalence. I don’t speak French that well. I can get by, but it’s not a tongue I could ever move around in in a way that would satisfy the appetites of the mind or the heart. -

L.A. meant palm trees and the Pacific Ocean, despotic directors and casting couches, a factory of illusion. L.A. was “the coast,” cut off by hundreds of miles of desert and mountain ranges. In those years Los Angeles wasn’t acknowl- edged as a musicCOPYRIGHTED town, despite producing MATERIAL some of the best jazz and rhythm and blues of the ’40s and ’50s. In 1960 the music business was still centered in New York, whose denizens regarded L.A. as kooky and provincial at best. Between the years 1960 and 1965 a remarkable shift occurred. The sound and image of Southern California began to take over, replacing Manhattan as the hub of American pop music. Producer Phil Spector took the hit-factory ethos of New York’s Brill Building 1 c01.qxd 3/29/06 11:47 AM Page 2 2 HOTEL CALIFORNIA songwriting stable to L.A. and blew up the teen-pop sound to epic proportions. Entranced by Spector, local suburban misfit Brian Wil- son wrote honeyed hymns to beach and car culture that reinvented the Golden State as a teenage paradise. Other L.A. producers followed suit. In 1965, singles recorded in Los Angeles occupied the No. 1 spot for an impressive twenty weeks, compared to just one for New York. On and around Sunset, west of old Hollywood before one reached the manicured pomp of Beverly Hills, clubs and coffee- houses began to proliferate. -

William Russell: Jazz Lover, Collector, and Musicologist an Annotated Bibliography
William Russell: Jazz Lover, Collector, Musicologist An Annotated Bibliography Ben Wagner Born Russell William Wagner in 1905, William (Bill) Russell was a violinist; an avant-garde composer deeply interested in percussion; accompanist to a touring puppet troupe; a meticulous musical-instrument repairman; a jazz-record producer; an archivist; a writer; and, above all, a New Orleans jazz collector of extraordinary breadth. More than anything else, he simply loved classic New Orleans–style jazz, which he called the “best music I’d ever heard.”1 He sought out obscure, old-time jazz players and was instrumental in the revival of the career of Bunk Johnson. Russell privately showed many kindnesses to jazz musicians down on their luck, encouraging their careers. In an age of segregation, Russell had many close associations with African Americans, organizing recording sessions in houses and rented halls because blacks were not allowed in New Orleans recording studios, nor could they play openly with white musicians. He did much to document and advocate New Orleans as the true birthplace of jazz. Although there were some inaccuracies in his early writings—and the debate continues about the many-faceted origins of American jazz—Russell’s overall analysis has stood up well against later scholarship. He certainly was one of the first to note the importance of place in the development of jazz. From the early 1930s to the end of his life, Russell acquired and documented anything he could find related to jazz: oral-history recordings and transcripts, jam-session recordings, musical instruments, photographs, programs, postcards, ads, city guidebooks, correspondence, sheet music, magazines. -
Happy 100Th Birthday, Pete!
Happy 100th Birthday, Pete! The Rosenberg Fund for Children community celebrates Pete Seeger on the 100th anniversary of his birth, May 3, 2019 “Pete was the headliner at the kick-off benefit concert for the Rosenberg Fund for Children in 1990, and in 1997 performed in another RFC benefit. He and his wife Toshi were original members of our Advisory Board. We could count on Pete to come to our aid. He joined us again in 2001, when he and his grandson Tao helped us celebrate the RFC’s 10th anniversary. When, in 2003, pneumonia prevented him from joining the RFC’s 50th anniversary commemoration of Ethel and Julius’ executions, he sent a heartfelt, but unnecessary, apology. We knew the only reason he didn’t make it was because it was physically impossible. Pete was always there for us, our family and our projects. And perhaps the most remarkable thing about him is that this was no exception. For the last 75 years he was there for almost every progressive undertaking you could imagine. There simply was no one else like him.” - Robert Meeropol (RFC founder, and son of Ethel & Julius Rosenberg) & Jenn Meeropol (RFC Executive Director and granddaughter of Ethel & Julius Rosenberg) (RFC kick-off benefit concert poster, Oct 12, 1990, Northampton, MA) (May 1954 Sing Out! signed by Pete Seeger, Richie Havens, Country Joe McDonald & Jane Sapp at the RFC kick-off concert in Northampton, MA, Oct 12, 1990.)
