Autumn Festival and Scarecrow Competition Sunday 16th September 2018 3pm - 5pm In Village Hall

Featuring: Castleside Primary School Choir, competitions and more! More details on page 2 Autumn Festival

Summer has truly arrived! It's just a pity that the weather doesn't always take notice and behave as it should. How quickly this year is passing and by the time you read this the days will already be shortening in length. However there are the school holidays ahead, where the children and teachers can recuperate from the rigours of the education system and before we know it, it will be September and time once more for the village Autumn Festival. Last years Festival was very successful and we hope to build on this. This year we have increased the competitions for adults and children and by giving you all extra notice we would really like to think that even more people will join in with the fun.

Children's competitions will be as follows: Three decorated buns Three home made biscuits (No decoration required) A bunch of wild flowers with foliage Knitted novelty Home made novelty bird box, made from any material! It doesn't have to be practical. Painted Plant Pot Photograph of our village Adults competition will be: Victoria Sponge Jar of home made jam Knitted flowers Photograph of local wildlife Open competition: Vegetable monster Scarecrow competition: This years theme is Royal Weddings. Let your imagination run riot and start planning now. It doesn't have to be a bride and groom, guests are included too! Should be displayed by 10am on Saturday 15th September.

As of last year, our wonderful Castleside School choir will be entertaining us and refreshments, biscuits and cakes will be available. The Parish Council look forward to meeting all our old friends and new at this enjoyable community event. See you there, Cllr Kris Spencer. The Parish Council are planning a project to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War 1, which involves hundreds of knitted poppies and we would love this to be a whole village effort.. Once knitted, the poppies will be sewn together to create a magnificent display, which we hope, will become part of our village history and legacy. If you don’t have any red wool, please contact either Councillor Judith Robson or Coun- cillor Johanna Forster who will be able to provide you with some. When you finish knit- ting your poppy it would be very helpful if you would leave a tail of wool as this will help us to tie it onto our display. Parish Councillors will be happy to collect any completed batches of poppies. The Parish Council would like to thank the resident who has already kindly donated some wool to this project.

We had our annual litter pick on 12th May, the sun came out and so did a few helpers. We managed to collect 24 bags of rubbish along with quite a bit of fly tipping. As you are probably aware fly tipping is on the increase and we managed to collect 4 child seats and household rubbish including carpets! After all the hard work, volunteers came back for tea and cake. Thank you to everyone who joined us and see you next year. Cllr Jo Forster WW1 Centenary Commemoration This year marks 100 years since the end of the First World War. The Parish Council felt that it was important to recognise and commemorate the role the parish and its people played in The Great War. With this in mind we have secured a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund of £10,000 to be used on a number of projects throughout the village. Details of forthcoming events will be shared with you soon. Cllr Judith Robson

Our Village Hall has been serving us for nearly 100 years now and is looked after by a dedicated committee of volunteers. The committee do a marvelous job of running the hall and fund its day-to- day operations by hiring it out for special events like birthday parties and weddings, regular community groups and fundraising nights. The Friends of the Village Hall is an independent organisation set up a few years ago with the aim of raising money to ensure the Hall would survive in the event of a major expense. The walls of the Hall have already shown signs of movement and remedial work has been done, however with a building of this age it’s only a matter of time before further work is needed.

We are very fortunate in Castleside to have such a lovely Hall and it would be a disaster if the community were to lose it, therefore The Friends of Castleside Village Hall have opened a fund which grows due to the monthly contributions of a relatively small number of loyal contributors. Even though the growth is not as great as we would like, the fund represents a source of security for the Hall that would not otherwise exist. Once the fund has reached a substantial amount which will cover the inevitable future costs of repairing the fabric of the building we will be able to make regular donations to the Hall for improvements etc, which we have been able to do in a small way on a couple of occasions.

We desperately need more people to give just a couple of pounds each month to help secure the future of our Hall. You can make a real difference by making a small monthly contribution.

It’s simple to set up a standing order to the funds account either online or in your Bank. The Account details are: Sort Code: 20-33-51 Account Number: 43264238 Account Name: Friends of Castleside Village Hall Reference: your name

The ‘Friends’ committee is made up from representatives from various community groups within the village, e.g. History Society, Parish Council, Art Club & Village Hall, who all wish to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Hall.

There is an annual meeting held to elect the committee to which all contributors are invited.

Thank you. Activities

Year 6 leavers at Castleside Primary School savoured a series of exhilarating experiences on a whirlwind trip to London in June. No sooner had they arrived in the capital than the 16-strong group were whisked off to the Tate Modern art gallery on the South Bank, where they cast an appreciative eye over the works of Mark Rothko, Claude Monet and Andy Warhol. Then, after a stroll across the London Millennium Foot- bridge, it was onwards and upwards: to the 37th floor of the Sky Garden to take in a 360-degree panora- ma of London landmarks, including Tower Bridge, the Olympic Stadium and the Houses of parliament. The view was equally stunning the following afternoon from row four of the Cambridge Theatre, where the party enjoyed a magnificent performance of Matilda the Musical. The trip also included a visit to The Making of Harry Potter exhibition at Warner Brothers Studio in Watford, an excellent wordplay workshop at the British Library and dinner at the Rainforest Café in Leicester Square. There was also a Castleside’s Got Talent contest which featured standout performances from Charlie, who speed-read Hairy Maclary in a remarkable 40 seconds, and Matthew, who delivered an hilarious impression of Arnold Schwarzenegger. The London trip came towards the end of an action packed school year for pupils and staff. Since our last bulletin, in January, pupils have also enjoyed days out closer to home: to the Roman Wall and Gibside. The school also performed with distinction in the Song for Europe competition at the Gala Theatre in Dur- ham, beautifully mastering a folk song from Albania thanks to the school’s gem of a choir teacher Miss Barrass. In April the whole school was treated to an excellent performance of the Tin Foil Astronaut by the acting troupe Kitchen Zoo. The story followed the fortunes of Alba Dinkley, a young schoolgirl battling against the odds to achieve her dream of becoming an astronaut. Like the trip to the Locomotive Museum in to see Tim Peake’s space capsule (as mentioned in our last school bulletin), the experience was deemed to be out of this world! There was a magical moment for two pupils in Year 6, Ellie and Carl, when personal replies arrived at school from the pen of Harry Potter creator JK Rowling. There was also a touching moment when Year 4 pupil Matilda was shorn of her ponytail for the sake of young cancer sufferers who have lost their own hair. On the sporting front, the whole school got to grips with some first class judo training thanks to British champion Hannah Lewis and the Destination Judo programme. Mr Gilbert’s Kwik Cricket team started the summer with victories in their first two fixtures, while the school football team finished their season on a high, with a trio of wins in their final run of matches – thanks in no small measure to an injection of girl power from Year 6 pupils Ruby and the two Lucys. It has been a busy, rewarding year for head teacher Mrs Spence and her staff and they look forward to more of the same when the 2018-19 term opens in September.
