Vol. 17(2): 53–62 MACROGASTRA BADIA (C. PFEIFFER, 1828) (GASTROPODA: PULMONATA: CLAUSILIIDAE) IN ZIELENIEC (BYSTRZYCKIE MTS, CENTRAL SUDETES) – ECOLOGY, CONSERVATION STATUS AND LIFE HISTORY – PRELIMINARY DATA TOMASZ K. MALTZ,BEATA M. POKRYSZKO Museum of Natural History, Wroc³aw University, Sienkiewicza 21, 50-335 Wroc³aw, Poland (e-mail: [email protected], [email protected]) ABSTRACT: Information on thedistribution on theAlpine M. badia in Poland dates from the 1960s and was not verified subsequently. A new locality was discovered in 2003 (Bystrzyckie Mts, Zieleniec near Duszniki-Zdrój); it forms a part of a group of isolated, Polish and Czech localities on the border of the species’ distribution range. In the discussed part of the range the species is threatened by habitat destruction and climatic changes. It is legally protected in Poland but preserving its populations requires habitat protection. The preferred habi- tat is herb-rich beech forest, and cool and humid climate is crucial for the species’ survival. The composition of the accompanying malacofauna varies among the sites which is probably associated with their origin. M. badia is oviparous; in May and June it produces batches of 1–3 eggs. The eggs are partly calcified, 1.39–1.61 in major and 1.32–1.45 mm in minor diameter. The incubation period is 16–19 days; the hatching is asynchron- ous; the juveniles reach adult size in 7–8 months. Some data on shell variation are provided; the number of ap- ertural folds varies more widely than formerly believed. The same results showed that Stagnicola palustris (O. F. Müll.) and S. turricula (Held) could also be treated as separate species, but compared to the aforementioned lymnaeids, the differences in the analysed sequences between them were much smaller, although clearly recognisable. In each case they were also larger than the differences between these molecular features of specimens from different localities of S. palustris or S. turricula. New data on the distribution of S. palustris and S. turricula in Poland showed – in contrast to the earlier reports – that their ranges overlapped. This sympatric distribution together with the small but clearly marked differences in molecular features as well as with differences in the male genitalia between S.

  • Compositional Variability of Pleistocene Land Snail Assemblages Preserved in a Cinder Cone
Compositional variability of Pleistocene land snail assemblages preserved in a cinder cone volcano from Tenerife, Canary Islands A thesis submitted to the graduate school of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science In the Department of Geology of the College of Arts and Sciences by Elizabeth M. Bullard B.S., Muskingum University, 2012 July 2016 Advisors: Dr. Yurena Yanes Dr. Arnold I. Miller Committee Member: Dr. Joshua Miller i Abstract Fossil assemblage faunal compositions may vary through space and time in response to climatic and/or taphonomic factors, but these relationships can be difficult to diagnose and disentangle. Here, we investigate how to disentangle climatic and taphonomic signals of a land- snail-rich volcanic scoria sequence to asses if it was influenced by taphonomic bias, climate change, or both, using a multifaceted approach, combining taphonomic, ecological, body-size, and stable-isotope data. Fossil assemblages were sampled from two beds (Units A and B) in a Pleistocene cinder cone volcano of southern Tenerife (Canary Islands), dated to the glacial interval MIS 8 (~299-302 ka). The two units differed in taphonomy, species composition, and abundance distributions. The upper unit, B (6 species), showed higher snail diversity and shell concentration and lower taphonomic alteration than the lower unit, A (3 species). Furthermore, larger bodied species (length>10mm) dominated Unit A and were better preserved than smaller species (length<10mm), whereas smaller individuals were more abundant (and better preserved) at Unit B. These differences were likely impacted by physical differences in the matrices surrounding the fossils.

IUCN Red List version 2014.3: Table 9 Last Updated: 13 November 2014 Table 9: Possibly Extinct and Possibly Extinct in the Wild Species The number of recent extinctions documented by the Extinct (EX) and Extinct in the Wild (EW) categories on The IUCN Red List is likely to be a significant underestimate, even for well-known taxa such as birds. The tags 'Possibly Extinct' and 'Possibly Extinct in the Wild' have therefore been developed to identify those Critically Endangered species that are, on the balance of evidence, likely to be extinct (or extinct in the wild). These species cannot be listed as EX or EW until their extinction can be confirmed (i.e., until adequate surveys have been carried out and have failed to record the species and local or unconfirmed reports have been investigated and discounted). All 'Possibly Extinct' and 'Possibly Extinct in the Wild' species on the current IUCN Red List are listed in the table below, along the year each assessment was carried out and, where available, the date each species was last recorded in the wild. Where the last record is an unconfirmed report, last recorded date is noted as "possibly".
