Year 8 Girls HPV vaccination

An email was sent to parents/carers on Tuesday 4 June, regarding the second HPV vaccination which is due to take place on Monday 8 July. If you have any queries regarding this, please contact the vaccination team direct on 01376 302769. Staff Training Day – No Students

As we have a staff training day on Tuesday 25 June 2019, students will not be in school on that day.

Students Phoning Home

Students should not be contacting home during the school day on their mobile phones, as they are not permitted to use phones during the school day. If they do, they will have their phones confiscated for the rest of the day. If students need to contact home, they must go to Student Services, who will arrange for them to contact home if necessary. Any urgent issues or messages to do with students should be communicated via Reception, who can direct these to the most appropriate person. If students are ill and need to be sent home, a first aider will contact home and advise par- ents/carers.

Parents/carers are reminded that they should not come to school to collect their children without letting us know in advance. If this happens and a child tries to sign out of school, we have no way of knowing whether or not this is a legitimate request. If a child leaves and we do not know that they have done so with a parent or carer, staff will look for the child as a safeguarding concern. This is not an effective use of staff time and can be very worrying for both staff and parents and carers. We appreciate your co-operation in this matter.

Contacting the School

If parents/carers have any concerns, the following procedure is in place:-

Contact 1: Tutor – via email or telephone call via Student Services 01376 556300

Contact 2: Student Support Officers – via email or telephone call via Student Services 01376 556300

Contact 3: Head of House – via email or telephone call via Student Services 01376 556300

We will aim to respond to contact from parents/carers within 2 school days in the first instance.

Self Care for Teenagers Three things to know: 1. Self-care is anything you enjoy doing that helps make you happy and maintains your physical, mental or emotional health. Self-care helps parents/carers and teens deal with life’s everyday pressures in a more positive and rewarding way. Recent research has revealed that teaching teenagers how to balance their own needs now will help them in the future, while reducing some of the strain on their lives right now. Self-care can lead to healthier, happier, more adjusted young people. 2. Studies have demonstrated that when parents/ carers practise self-care, it’s been shown that teens are encouraged to do the same, and they take this positive habit into later life. So, your self-care helps teach your child how to look after themselves better. 3. Research shows that we need to build self-care habits from an early age so that when your child hits difficulties and roadblocks, they are able to navigate them skilfully and stay strong and steady. Self-care for teenagers is crucial with all the hormone changes, mood swings, struggles with self-image, self-esteem and building independence.

Be more Plan a timetable for regimented Avoid social media studying with the time you go to bed Three things to do if your child is at Key Stage 3 or 4:

1. Helping your child learn self-care can help them get through tough times such as exams, challenges or adversities. Suggest ideas to them about how to take care of their physical health and mental health and how to be creative. Ideas include exercising, walking, having a manicure, going for a haircut, seeing friends, having a bath, reading books, listening to podcasts or drawing.

2. Self-care works best as a routine to help your child feel energised and deal with pressures well. Talk to your child about the importance of doing things they enjoy and that make them feel happy. Bounce ideas with them, put them in the calendar and support them with doing them.

3. Encourage your child to make self-care a priority, remind them about it every so often and help them with what you can do together. Doing self-care activities together not only helps your child to cultivate good habits, it also helps your mind and body to be at its best. Ideas don’t need to be time consuming or elaborate, and sometimes they might be indulgent! Get started by cooking healthy meals together, doing hobbies, taking pride in each other’s appearance, having fun, getting outdoors, volunteering, or by watching a feel-good film.
