PEAC 114 – Strength, Speed and (.5 Unit)

Course Description: The purpose of this class is to provide the beginning, intermediate and advanced student / athlete with the knowledge necessary for understanding the basics of speed, strength, and plyometric training and to develop the techniques necessary for the safety and lessening the risk of injury in creating a training program that is specifically beneficial to him/her. The student will be knowledgeable in areas of speed, quickness, strength, power, agility and explosiveness. The student may also spend 5-10 minutes each period on stretching , which will help provide flexibility and a greater range of motion, in addition to developing slow and fast-twitch muscular response. Athletic attire and tennis shoes are mandatory! Bring your I.D., as well as a towel and water bottle, if necessary.

Course Objectives: The student will be able to:

1. Learn common strength, speed and plyometric exercises that are used in a well-balanced training program. This objective meets the SLO#4 which states, “Examine and analyze physical activity and motor skill performance as they relate to the physiological, psychological, and social responses and adaptations to exercise.” 2. Acquire knowledge needed to design his / her own training program. This objective meets the SLO #5 which states, “Integrate learned competencies and skills as part of prescribed integrative learning activities and experiences throughout the curriculum.” 3. Describe how the body responds to strength and speed training, the equipment necessary to use, and dietary and training information that is essential to success. This objective meets the SLO #4 which states, “Examine and analyze physical activity and motor skill performance as they relate to the physiological, psychological, and social responses and adaptations to exercise.” 4. Build on the basic training techniques and exercises first introduced, followed by more complex descriptions of exercise techniques and higher training intensities gradually. This objective meets the SLO #5 which states, “Integrate learned competencies and skills as part of prescribed integrative learning activities and experiences throughout the curriculum.” 5. Improve strength, muscle tone, body re-proportioning, appearance and overall health. 6. Develop procedures and drills which provide ample practice and self-assessment opportunities. 7. Gain a sense of confidence in his/her training skills and knowledge, fitness and energy levels. This objective meets the SLO #4 which states, “Examine and analyze physical activity and motor skill performance as they relate to the physiological, psychological, and social responses and adaptations to exercise.”

Academic Integrity: The student is expected to practice academic honesty in all activities related to this course. Original work is expected from the student, unless appropriate credit is given to specific work cited. Plagiarism is unacceptable, as are other types of cheating. Attendance/Evaluation: Attendance is required. Only one unexcused absence is allowed.

Grading - The final grade for the course will be determined completely by attendance.

Final grades will be determined by the following percentages:

A = 93-100% C+ = 77-79% F = 59% or less A. = 90-92% C = 70-76% B+ = 87-89% C- = 67-69% B = 83-86% D+ = 64-66% B- = 80-82% D = 60-63%
