Signed: ______________________ Date: ________________________ 2 Abstract This thesis will contextualise and critically explore how New Drama (Novaya Drama) has been shaped by and adapted to the political, social, and cultural landscape under Putinism (from 2000). It draws on close analysis of a variety of plays written by a burgeoning collection of playwrights from across Russia, examining how this provocative and political artistic movement has emerged as one of the most vehement critics of the Putin regime. This study argues that the manifold New Drama repertoire addresses key facets of Putinism by performing suppressed and marginalised voices in public arenas. It contends that New Drama has challenged the established, normative discourses of Putinism presented in the Russian media and by Putin himself, and demonstrates how these productions have situated themselves in the context of the nascent opposition movement in Russia. By doing so, this thesis will offer a fresh perspective on how New Drama’s precarious engagement with Putinism provokes political debate in contemporary Russia, and challenges audience members to consider their own role in Putin’s autocracy. The first chapter surveys the theatrical and political landscape in Russia at the turn of the millennium, focusing on the political and historical contexts of New Drama in Russian theatre and culture. -

Letter from the Editor “Letter From The Editor” serves as more than just a premise upon which to introduce the work of the author. The “Letter From The Editor”—where the author’s professor explains and examines the academic environment in which her students completed scholastically rigorous course projects, where she illuminates the highly successful outcome of her student’s rhe- torical and multimedia skills through the outcome of such projects, broad- casting Tara Kloeppel (the author of the piece to follow) as exemplary of such. The “Letter From The Editor” serves not only to promote authorial credibility (as it does successfully), but also to present an important com- ponent of the medium, a component at the heart of her student’s argument, the editorial letter present in every successful magazine. As the “Letter” begins, Greer—the author of the introduction and professor of Women in the Nineteenth Century at UMKC—jumps right into the pool of credibility and makes a “Wow” worthy splash as soon as the article begins. -

BB: Yes, I am a New Yorker. PS: You came here as a junior member of the Photography Department. [Pause] BB: A curatorial intern. It was the New York State Council program. PS: We didn‟t have an internship program then, so you were among the vanguard of interns at the Museum. Now we have a very ambitious intern program. BB: I think it was probably different curatorial departments who took the initiative. There were a number of people who had proceeded... PS: Peter [Galassi] came an intern. BB: No, it was here, the New York Council, but John [Szarkowski] had quite a network, and I met him actually at the Oakland Museum. I was working there as a curatorial assistant in their photography division and I was lucky enough to know him. He was going to Hawaii or someplace like that, probably, though I learned from him in an hour than I had to that point, because the way he saw things and the way he saw that they should be presented were so exciting. -
