ORKIDEALEHDEN (Numeroon 3/1981 Saakka Jäsenlehti) HAKEMISTO 1968-2016 ORKIDEALEHDEN (numeroon 3/1981 saakka Jäsenlehti) HAKEMISTO 1968-2016: Visa Lipponen English summary. Alphabetical index of all published articles in Finnish Orchid Society’s orchid magazine Orkidealehti. Alkuvuosien 1968-1978 lehdissä ei mainittu säännöllisesti yhdistyksen toimihenkilöitä tai tulevien kokousten ohjelmaa. Niillä on kuitenkin keskeinen sija yhdistyksen toiminnassa. Pohjakallio, K. [”K.P.”] tai Puhakka, A. [”Sihteeri”]. Joistakin numeroista on puuttunut sivunumerointi. Kirjoitusten perään olen laittanut sivunumerot hakasulkeissa laskemalla sivunumerot kansilehdestä alkaen. Aalto, A.-M. 2014: Esteetikko orkideatarhassa. 47(1): 36-41. • Bifoliate Cattleyas - Cattleya Tigrina (Syn
St. Augustine Orchid Society www.staugorchidsociety.org Bifoliate Cattleyas - Cattleya tigrina (syn. leopoldii) by Sue Bottom, [email protected] If your orchids do not bloom much during the heat of the summer, you might consider adding some bifoliate cattleyas to your collection. There are small varieties like Cattleya walkeriana, aclandiae and violacea that do not take up too much space and bloom several times a year. Then there are the large varieties like Cattleya tigrina, which was called leopoldii for years. It has beautiful clusters of flowers held on stems above the foliage. Courtney describes these bifoliates as multiflora cattleyas in his book American Cattleyas: A multiflora cattleya is one where the inflorescence is the focus of hybridizing instead of the individual flower. Typically there are more than seven flowers on a single inflorescence arranged as a mass instead of as a series of individual flowers. While the parent species are usually bifoliate, not all bifoliates are multifloras… Multifloras are separated from all other groups discussed because the form of each individual flower, although important, is not the focus of the hybrid. The perfect multiflora cattleya has a mass of flowers with each flower fully open and barely coming in contact with other flowers in the inflorescence so that from all sides there are no large gaps between flowers. The form of each individual flower should be as closed (petals and sepals overlapping) as possible, given the parentage. The arrangement of flowers on the stem is more important than individual flower form. The typical color form of Cattleya tigrina (syn.

Orchids: 2017 Global Ex situ Collections Assessment Botanic gardens collectively maintain one-third of Earth's plant diversity. Through their conservation, education, horticulture, and research activities, botanic gardens inspire millions of people each year about the importance of plants. Ophrys apifera (Bernard DuPon) Angraecum conchoglossum With one in five species facing extinction due to threats such (Scott Zona) as habitat loss, climate change, and invasive species, botanic garden ex situ collections serve a central purpose in preventing the loss of species and essential genetic diversity. To support the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, botanic gardens create integrated conservation programs that utilize diverse partners and innovative techniques. As genetically diverse collections are developed, our collective global safety net against plant extinction is strengthened. In nature, orchid seed germination is obligatory following infection by mycorrhizal fungi, which supplies the developing embryo with water, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, causing the seeds to germinate relatively slowly and at a low germination rate. ,e nonsymbiotic germination of orchid seeds found in 1922 is applicable to in vitro propagation. ,e success of seed germination in vitro is influenced by supplementation with organic compounds. Here, we review the scientific literature in terms of the contents and role of organic supplements in promoting seed germination, protocorm development, and seedling growth in orchids. We systematically collected information from scientific literature databases including Scopus, Google Scholar, and ProQuest, as well as published books and conference proceedings. Various organic compounds, i.e., coconut water (CW), peptone (P), banana homogenate (BH), potato homogenate (PH), chitosan (CHT), tomato juice (TJ), and yeast extract (YE), can promote seed germination and growth and development of various orchids.

Do Orchids Grow in Hawaii? And How! SYNOPSIS This is an historical sketch of the Saga of Orchids in Hawaii. The sequence of events from the incidental introduction of species by the Agriculturists for the Sugar Industry; to their efforts in propagation and culture, hybridizing and germination; to the development of personal nurseries to commercial ranges; and ultimately to the creation of a viable orchid industry, re cognized world wide; to the natural formation of orchid societies staging of orchid shows; and finally to the introduction of a system of orchid judging , should bring interesting reading to orchidists, amateur and professional alike. • The Genus Encyclia (Hooker, Bot. Mag. 55: T. 2831 [1828]) Type: Encyclia Viridiflora [En-SEE-Clee-Ah Vi-Rid-I-FLOR-A]
The Genus Encyclia (Hooker, Bot. Mag. 55: t. 2831 [1828]) Type: Encyclia viridiflora [en-SEE-clee-ah vi-rid-i-FLOR-a] There are 183 species and 16 natural hybrids (OrchidWiz [update Sep 2017]) that are mostly epiphytes that can be separated into two subgenera (not widely accepted but culturally convenient). Members of the subgenus Encyclia are principally found in seasonally dry forest at elevations from sea level to 1000 meters, while members of the subgenus Osmophytum are found in wet forest from sea level to 3,000 meters. Encyclias are distributed throughout the tropical Americas (including the West Indies, see distribution map below) with the center of distribution being in Mexico. These plants are highly variable, clump-forming, evergreen with the genus characterized by the presence of pseudobulbs; the apical inflorescence; the flowers not exceeding four centimeters in diameter; the lip free from the column for most of its length; the column without a foot; and the four hard pollinia attached to caudicles. The slender, often multibranched, numerous to few-flowered inflorescence, borne from the stem tip, has showy, wonderfully fragrant flowers found in a wide range of colors and shades of yellow, brown, green or rare pink. The flowers have similar sepals and petals. The widely varied, Encyclia viridiflora entire or trilobed lip encircles the stout or slender, footless column, but is never fully attached. These plants are best mounted on branches or tree fern plaques and generally do best in intermediate conditions. Encyclia is part of the Cattleya alliance and is often used in Cattleya alliance breeding.

  • Influence of Different Concentrations of Jasmonic Acid on in Vitro Development of Catasetum Fimbriatum Lindl
ISSN 2226-3063 e-ISSN 2227-9555 Modern Phytomorphology 11: 99–104, 2017 doi: 10.5281/zenodo.1039717 CORRESPONDENCE Influence of different concentrations of jasmonic acid on in vitro development of Catasetum fimbriatum Lindl. (Orchidaceae) Juliana Antunes Silva Maia, Cristiano Pedroso-de-Moraes * Botany and Environment Laboratory, Hermínio Ometto University Center – Uniararas, Maximilano Baruto Av. 500, Jardim Universitário, 13600-000 Araras, São Paulo, Brazil; * [email protected] Received: 21.05.2017 | Accepted: 23.07.2017 | Published: 31.10.2017 Abstract In vitro seeding constitutes an indispensable tool for propagation of the main commercial species of orchids. This study aimed to analyze the in vitro development of Catasetum fimbriatum under different concentrations of jasmonic acid in Murashige & Skoog culture medium compound of ½ macronutrients. After 180 days of cultivation, concentration of 0.25 and 0.50 μL • L-1 caused a significant increase in number of roots and leaves. The concentration of 1.00 μL • L-1 showed the best result for the length of longest root and largest leaf, the total length of seedling, and the total fresh and dry masses. Nevertheless, the use of this plant regulator on in vitro culture media still requires further investigations to determine the optimal concentration in order to obtain desirable phytotechnical characteristics in different orchid species. Keywords: Catasetum fimbriatum, jasmonic acid, plant regulator, in vitro propagation Introduction et al. 2012).
