H ead coach his ninth season as the women’s head coach; it will also be his 11th year Pleading the men’s team. Sporting a career record of 77-50-15 (.595) with the women’s program, Holguin has the best win- ning percentage of any coach in team history. He is also the only coach in school history to achieve 12 wins in a season, a feat he accomplished in 2003 and 2004. Holguin’s 2003 crew was also re- sponsible for claiming Marietta’s best Ohio Athletic Conference finish (two-way tie for third) since 1991. He then led his 2005 Pioneers to a school-record 14 wins. Under his direction, the women have racked up 25 All-OAC and 15 Academic All-OAC honors. In addition, four athletes were named Clyde A. Lamb recipients and one received the Betty Cleland award. Holguin has achieved similar success with the men’s program, compiling a 66-93-15 (.422) career record. Holguin’s winning percentage ranks fifth among Pioneer coaches. Last year, he guided the men to a late-season run and earned the school’s first OAC Tournament berth in 10 seasons. In 2002, his team finished the season 12-5-2, the most victories by a squad since 1984. Holguin’s athletes have accumulated 15 All-OAC and 12 Academic All-OAC honors. Among them is Marcos Vaca, only the second player in Marietta history to earn All-OAC honors for four straight years (2001-04). A 1989 graduate from Quinnipiac College with a degree in interna- tional business, Holguin began his coaching career in Houston, Texas. From 1993-97, he was the head coach of the men and women’s club soc- cer program at the University of Houston. He was also involved as a coach with the South Texas Olympic Development Program and was the Director of Player Development and Coaching with the Alliance Soccer Program. Holguin remains involved with the Olympic Development Program in . He was also the Director of Player Development and Coaching for the River Valley Soccer Club from 1999-2003. Holguin re- turned to the role in 2008. Holguin, who lives in Marietta, earned a master’s degree in education from Marietta College in 2008.

4 Assistant Coach A ssistant coach Stephen rose

tephen Rose begins his fourth year as an assis- tant coach for the men and women’s soccer pro- Sgrams at Marietta College. It is his second as a full-time member of the department; he also assists in the sports information office. A graduate of Marietta High School, Rose returned to his hometown after attending Walsh University where he received his undergraduate degree in communi- cations. He was a four-year starter for the Cavaliers and garnered All-American Mideast Conference (AMC) honors twice. Rose also played basketball at Walsh for one season. In addition to his collegiate playing experience, Rose was also a suc- cessful player with the local River Valley Soccer Club. Considering his club coach was Patrick Holguin, Rose feels right at home on the Marietta College soccer coaching staff. Rose earned his United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “D” li- cense in 2006 and his National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) National Diploma in 2008. He remains active with the River Val- ley Soccer Club, where he coaches boys teams, ranging from under-16 to under-18. Rose also coordinates all of the local youth soccer tournaments and camps at Marietta College. Rose, who lives in Marietta, completed his Master of Arts in Liberal Learning in the spring of 2007.

10 Ohio Athletic Conference O hio athletic conference D-III’s Best Conference

he Ohio Athletic Conference, the third oldest conference in col- lege athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Confer- ence is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself Tand has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s. Through the years, a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently the Confer- ence consists of 10 members, including Baldwin-Wallace College, , Heidelberg College, , Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum College, , Ot- terbein College and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school on July 1, 2000. The Conference currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10 women’s. The enrollments at the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding academic reputations. The 2007-08 year proved, once again, why the OAC is one of the most prestigious Division III conferences in the country. The Mount Union football team advanced to their 11th Stagg Bowl, while Capital advanced to the NCAA Playoffs for the third consecutive time. The Ohio Northern volleyball team made its eighth straight NCAA III Tournament appearance and the program recorded its NCAA-record 31st straight winning season. The Heidelberg volleyball team reached the NCAA Regional Semifinals following an appearance in the OAC Tourna- ment Finals. The Muskingum softball team advanced to the Division III World Series for the eighth time. Heidelberg wrestling sent five to the NCAA Division III National Tournament and placed two. The Otterbein women’s golf team placed fifth at the NCAA Tournament, while the Mount Union men placed 12th. Individually, the Conference was represented by 64 All-Americans and two national titles in track and field. Mount Union’s Dan Gund won the outdoor shot put title and Heidelberg’s Judy Bataille claimed the indoor 55-meter dash title. Academically, the OAC boasted numerous CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans, along with regional and na- tional coaching honors.

President, Dr. Jean A. Scott A new era began at Marietta College on July 15, 2000, when Dr. Jean A. Scott became the 17th President of the College. She is the first female president at Marietta College. Most recently, Scott was president of Bradford College, in Haverhill, Mass. Scott graduated with a major in history from Westhampton College at the Univer- sity of Richmond where she was elected Phi Beta Kappa and earned her A.B. degree in 1968. She then attended Harvard University Marietta Field and received her M.A. in history in 1969 and her Ph.D. in history in 1974. “I am very excited at the opportunity to lead the college with the rich traditions and bright future that Marietta enjoys,” Scott said. Since Scott’s arrival at Marietta the campus has grown to include the many new buildings and facilities, enriching the educational experience for all of its students.

Athletics Director, Larry Hiser Larry Hiser, who brings more than a decade of sports administration experience from Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., of- ficially became the Director of Athletics and Recreation at Marietta College in March. Hiser earned a Bachelor of Arts in Eng- lish from Ohio Northern University in 1987, where he was an all-conference shortstop on the Polar Bears baseball team. He went on to earn a Master of Science in Physi- cal Education/Athletic Administration from Springfield College in Massachusetts, where he was a graduate assistant. He joined Endicott College in the fall of 1994 as the Gulls first baseball coach. In his 12 years as Athletic Director, Hiser played a critical role in trans- forming Endicott College from a two-year, women’s college to a selective, co-educational four-year college. Under his watch the Gulls have won 37 conference championships and participated in 47 NCAA or ECAC tourna- ments. Endicott also successfully launched new programs for equestrian, lacrosse and football, while improving the facilities that now rank among the finest in New England. The Oregon, Ohio, native is married to the former Susan Chick. They have two children, Dan, 8, and Allison, 7.
