All projects come with an inherent risk of not being successful, but Risk-based Inspection (RBI) continues to show just the opposite. It is actually gaining momentum. With all the changes in the business, project, and resources situations, stations could easily lose their certification due to failure to sustain the RBI process. However, many power stations have proven to be ready to take RBI and Eskom to new heights. Not wanting to be outdone by others, Majuba Power Station also retained its certification following the surveillance audit conducted by the certification body TÜV Rheinland on 27 March 2017. On completion of the audit, the auditors were satisfied with the progress made at Majuba. They were confident that the RBI process was being carried out as required by the Department of Labour.

As we all know, in any situation, there is always room for continuous improvement, and stations draw learning from the challenges they come across. The Majuba team also had their fair share. They were issued with six non-conformances (NCRs) by the certification body. Four of them were technical, and two were related to the RBI management system. Overall, four were minor, and the remaining two were major; both were on the technical side. Among the points highlighted during the audit were post-outage results that had to be effectively analysed and recorded. RBI effectiveness had to be reported on an annual basis, and the adequacy of the RBI scope was also touched on. Majuba RBI team, Head Office team, and TÜV representatives

During April 2015, Highveld Steel filed for voluntary business rescue as a result of cash flow challenges and unfavourable market conditions and ceased operations during July 2015.

In October 2015 the Business Rescue plan was published. The plan recommended the sale of Highveld Steel to International Resource Limited. The transaction failed leading to the implementation of the winding down of the company’s assets as contemplated in the business rescue plan. Highveld Steel was unsuccessful to procure funding to retain employees and restart the operations, which ultimately resulted in the retrenchment of all staff.

It is important to note that a child’s early development is significant in making them the person they are meant to be as an adult.

It was determined that the Majuba Power Station, together with the Power Station Manager and the Donations Committee, agreed to donate three mobile classrooms to the Day Care. The ISO 900:2015 standard is aimed at embedding risk-based thinking in the overall quality management framework, thereby building a stable foundation for the future of our business. The revised standard expects business to consider the numerous new and existing risks that affect our business and hinder quality.

It is crucial for the business to understand the implications of this standard for our overall approach to quality management.

Complying with ISO 9001 has been a key organisational focus since Eskom received ISO 9001:2008 certification in March 2013. The approach to compliance must be proactive, result-oriented, and not limited to achieving certification. Our business would do well to integrate the requirements of the revised standard in business processes and following these requirements consistently across the value chain, so that quality becomes part of our day-to-day activities.

Our structure, business processes, and operations are different from those of others; therefore, the steps involved in adapting to the new standard will also vary. However, there are certain basic aspects that can be embraced to align our processes with risk-based quality and map us to the ISO 9001:2015 standard. A business can also select and utilise various tools and methodologies to mitigate risks, document information, evaluate performance, maintain a controlled quality environment, carry out impact assessments, and engage people.

The transition from ISO 9001:2008 to ISO 9001:2015 is an opportunity to raise the bar on how our business manages quality, evolving over time, until quality becomes a way of life in Eskom.
