An enjoyable book for anyone interested in exploring logic and philosphyBy CritterChrisClear and Present Thinking was the result of a Kickstarter campaign to create a free textbook for college students, which I think is a really wonderful idea! I should state right off, however, that as someone who never went to college, hasn't ever studied philosophy or critical thinking prior to this, and read the book on my own without a classroom environment to explore the ideas and questions in the book, I suppose I am approaching it from a bit different of a standpoint than the target audience. Another disclaimer - I've also never written a book review before.I expected a textbook on logic to be dry and hard to get through, and was pleasantly surprised to find that instead it was fascinating and very accessible. The writing style conveyed the ideas and concepts to me in a way that made them easy to understand and relate to, and I enjoyed reading it. I appreciated the use of humor and examples of modern situations to illustrate some of the points; that really brought them to life for me. It introduced terms and concepts that I had thought I was pretty familiar with, maybe even had used myself regularly, but hadn't ever stopped to think about where they originated, or what they actually meant. I have found myself pondering a lot of these ideas - re-framing them in my mind in a whole new way - quite a bit since finishing the book.Most chapters end with a set of questions and discussion points, and I could see how one would get so much more out of this book in a classroom setting, going through each chapter and then discussing the topic with others. It made me wish I could actually take a class that used this book. I do think it gave me a good foundation for further exploration, though, and will be a handy reference to pick back up periodically. Regarding the Kindle edition specifically, I found the linked citations very useful but really would have loved to have had a Table of Contents as well, especially since I found myself wanting to go back and forth between topics as I encountered new information that built on a concept covered in a previous chapter. This is the main reason I only gave the book four stars.I'd recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning more about ethics, philosophy, or who just wants to take a closer look at what shapes their own thoughts, ideas and beliefs.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.     PAGANISM A brief overview of the history of Paganism The term Pagan comes from the Latin paganus which refers to those who lived in the country. When Christianity began to grow in the Roman Empire, it did so at first primarily in the cities. The people who lived in the country and who continued to believe in “the old ways” came to be known as pagans. Pagans have been broadly defined as anyone involved in any religious act, practice, or ceremony which is not Christian. Jews and Muslims also use the term to refer to anyone outside their religion. Some define paganism as a religion outside of Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism; others simply define it as being without a religion. Paganism, however, often is not identified as a traditional religion per se because it does not have any official doctrine; however, it has some common characteristics within its variety of traditions. One of the common beliefs is the divine presence in nature and the reverence for the natural order in life. In the strictest sense, paganism refers to the authentic religions of ancient Greece and Rome and the surrounding areas. The pagans usually had a polytheistic belief in many gods but only one, which represents the chief god and supreme godhead, is chosen to worship. The Renaissance of the 1500s reintroduced the ancient Greek concepts of Paganism. Pagan symbols and traditions entered European art, music, literature, and ethics. The Reformation of the 1600s, however, put a temporary halt to Pagan thinking. Greek and Roman classics, with their focus on Paganism, were accepted again during the Enlightenment of the 1700s.

Sexually aggressive or inappropriate behaviour will not be tolerated. 6. No underage drinking of alcohol is permitted. The legal drinking age in Ontario is 19. (Years from past lives do not count toward legal drinking age.) 7. Children under the age of 18 must be in the company of, OR have written permission from, a custodial parent or legal guardian to attend the festival. 8. Parents are responsible for their under-18 children at all times. Parents who do not, in the opinion of the Festival organizers, exercise good parental care of their children will be asked to leave. I think the Mount Haemus Prize is very prestigious, and I feel deeply honoured to have been chosen for it. When Philip Carr-Gomm first offered me this opportunity, I was delighted, and I began researching and writing on the topic of ancient Celtic and European virtue immediately. That was three years ago. A short essay became a long one; a long essay became a book; and that book was published. Therefore, six months before this paper was due, I suddenly realised I had written an entire book full of stuff that I could not use for today’s presentation! This paper, therefore, may be seen as a continuation of the research I began three years ago, although it will not be necessary to have read that book in order to follow the argument I shall present to you today. My title comes from an old Scottish folk song in praise of the faeries. Its relevance to my talk may not seem obvious until I’m nearly done, but don’t worry. It all fits together, at least in my own mind. I hope that you find my presentation worthy of the honour of the Mount Haemus prize. Since I am the first professional philosopher invited to deliver the Mount Haemus lecture (that is, professional in the sense that I am paid by a university to teach philosophy), I think it well to start by saying a little bit about the nature of my discipline.

    THE ORDER OF BARDS OVATES & DRUIDS MOUNT HAEMUS LECTURE FOR THE YEAR 2017 The Eighteenth Mount Haemus Lecture The Elementary Forms of Druidic Life: Towards a Moral Ecology of Land, Sea, and Sky by Jonathan Woolley Abstract The purpose of this paper is to characterise the central features of Druidry as a culture. Contemporary Druidry is defined varyingly as a religion, a spirituality, or a philosophy – but the broad category of “culture” allows us to consider Druidry as something that is as much practiced as it is thought, as much felt as it is imagined, and something that looks out onto broad philosophical horizons. Through examining both Druidry-as-practiced, and recent discussions of Druidic themes in previous Mount Haemus Lectures, it becomes clear that the fundamental orientation of Druidry today is towards one philosophical horizon in particular – that of aesthetics. This elemental aesthetic reveals a cosmology that is orderly, yet full of feeling; holistic, yet diverse – that in turn renders sensible a culture where body and soul, nature and humankind, emotion and reason cannot be kept apart, where all aspects of existence are valuable. In appreciating these pivotal aspects of Druidic thinking, I suggest, it becomes clear to see the unique contribution of Druidic philosophy to central moral and political concerns of the present day.
