Funds Needed Weekly Recently I was asked what it costs each week to keep Sacred Heart Parish running. Tough question; easy answer! If we take the total annual budget and divide it by 52 weeks, then the funds needed each week amount to: $18,224.00. That includes the costs of insurance, utilities, maintenance, salaries, supplies, loans that we are working to pay down, etc. On average, our weekly offertory falls short of that amount anywhere from $9,300 to $11,700. That deficit is offset in part by baptism, wedding and funeral stipends. It is offset in part by generous, one-time donations, including bequests made to the parish and rental income. (None of these last sources of additional income are ever guaranteed!) Sharing this information may be startling to some if not many of us. However, it is our reality. May I take this opportunity to thank you most sincerely for your generous response to so many different appeals, second collections, outreach programs, etc. I am so grateful for your many kindnesses to the parish and I am humbled by your many expressions of generosity. I know that God is good all the time (all the time, God is good!) and so I entrust you to our Heavenly Father, that He may repay you by showering many blessings down upon you throughout Advent and the upcoming Christmas season. Fr. Bob

From the Pastor’s Desk The Second Sunday of Advent: Prepare the Way of the Lord

As we begin our second week of Advent, the words of in today’s gospel are as urgent for us as they were for John’s original audience. They are words that I need to hear and words that the world needs to hear. How often it is heard that the Christmas season brings out so much good in people! Generosity is at an all-time high. For so many, there is excitement in the air, a renewed energy, a child-like-ness (awe) that captures even many adults! Lights and decorations have begun to go up all over indicating a festive time. Many of us are listening to and singing our beloved Christmas Carols. Some have begun writing cards and letters, making lists and checking them twice! Some have even bragged about finishing their Christmas shopping. Wow! All of this to honor our Lord! All of this as proof of our having heard the challenge of today’s gospel. Or not? The call to repentance that John the Baptist makes in today’s gospel is the fulfillment of ’s prophecy of the one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” The call of repentance is an invitation to return to God and to turn away from evil. Who among us does not need that invitation in a regular way? I surely do. The call to prepare the way of the Lord, to make straight his paths is multi-faceted. It includes removing obstacles, clearing the path of debris, trip hazards, smoothing out the path for the journey of faith. Temptations, sins, negative attitudes, stubbornness, inability to seek or offer forgiveness, doubts, other voices that call us away from the Lord and/or place immoveable stumbling blocks in our way makes it difficult for us to get to the Lord and for the Lord to get to us! Of course the Lord can always get to us if our hearts are open to receive Him. He is stronger than all our obstacles together! We have to take responsibility for our spiritual lives. No one can pray in our place; no one can go to Church for us, no one can celebrate the sacraments for us. As we journey through this second week of Advent, let us recommit ourselves to clearing a path in our personal lives in order that we may make our way to the Lord and facilitate his making His way to us. When we journey together with the Lord, when we leave behind all those things that inhibit our spiritual growth, when we wait patiently for the Lord to come to us, our lives will be marked with joy, contentment and great awe when we gather for the celebration of the great solemnity of Christmas. Thanks for walking this journey with me.

Mass for Young Adults (18-35) Sunday, December 15 – 7:00 PM All are welcome!

Refreshments follow in the Church Hall Please bring something to share!

Reconciliation Monday: December 16 Please join us next Monday, December 16th, anytime between 4:00-8:00 PM for the opportunity to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation prior to Christmas. Confessions will be heard all around the Archdiocese of New York, offering extra hours for those who wish to take advantage of this Sacrament of Healing. It is a very concrete way of putting the message of John the Baptist into practice: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.”

Altar Servers Needed Any student in grades 3-12 who is interested in becoming an Altar Server should contact the Parish Office to leave their name and telephone number (parents should do this for their son/daughter). There will be several required training sessions. New Altar Servers MUST attend two of the following practices: Saturday, January 4; Saturday, January 11; and/or Saturday, January 18. In addition to the assistance that the altar servers provide to the priest and the smooth-running of the Mass, altar serving also gives the young people of the parish an opportunity to serve the community, be very close to Jesus on the Altar and may even help to inspire them to offer their lives in dedicated service to others. Parents Please Note: Signing your son/daughter up to be an altar server doesn’t guarantee that he/she will serve the same Mass for each assignment. Part of the responsibility to serve includes being available where and when needed. Continued on previous page
