The history of the club is a proud one that successfully ran annual race Meeting s in the face of pressure from external factors such as war, depression, drought, and floods. At a public Meeting in 1882, Mr. Greenwood, of Teviotdale, gave notice that he was proposing that a Racing Club be formed. The first race Meeting of the Amberley Steeplechase Club was held at the “Seadown” Estate. Annual race Meeting s took place through the 1880’s and 1890’s with Mr Frank Courage, Seadown’s owner, at the helm. In the mid-1890’s, the club moved to its new racecourse in Racecourse Road, Amberley, the club leasing its land from the Kowai Domain Board. The club was to remain there until 1974, when, under the Centralisation Scheme, the Amberley Racing Club moved to Rangiora. TERRY MOSELEY KAVISH CHOWDHOORY By 1915 G. B. Starkey was chairman of the Club. Owner of “Brackenfield” Age 51 Career Wins 1081 Age 27 Career Wins 41 farm, Starkey had founded the Backenfield Hunt Club in 1883 and served as National Premiership 2017-18 National Premiership 2017-18 their first master of the hunt. 19 Wins 3 Wins In 1927 Mr. G. Born in 1882, George Norman Riding today in Races Riding today in Races McLean was the owner of “Glasnevin”. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 & 10 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 & 10 In the 1930’s, as the grip of the depression deepened, Amberley was, like many other organisations, forced to combine with other clubs in order to continue their annual Meeting s, choosing instead to race both at Riccarton and Motukarara in order to guarantee a profit from their day’s racing. The outbreak of the Second World War was to present the Amberley Racing Club with new issues. The race course was commandeered by the military as part of the war effort. Racing was not to take place at the course again until 1945. The issue of ownership of Amberley Racing Club land was finally resolved in 1953.The club’s committee had been determined to purchase the land on which they had made so many improvements. Finally, a letter in 1952 from the Commissioner of Crown Lands to the Kowai Domain Board advised that LISA ALLPRESS CORY CAMPBELL the Honourable Minister of Lands had approved the selling of the Racecourse Age 44 Total Wins 1486 Age 18 Total Wins 63 National Premiership 7117-18 National Premiership 2017-18 – for the sum of £2,250. That sale was finalised in February 1953. The Amberley 87 Wins. 25 Wins Racing Club was now the owner of the 214 acres they had been racing on Riding today in ALL Races Riding today in Races for over fifty years. Through the 1950’s and 1960’s the club initiated many 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9 & 10 improvements, which included renewed fencing, updated totalisator facilities, together with the installation of a new semaphore opposite the main stands. In 1973, the New Zealand Racing authority directed the Club, under the centralisation scheme, to move its Meeting s to Rangiora. The concept of centralisation had been raised from time to time with the majority of the members keen to retain their independence. The mood, this time, was more favourable, with members of the committee proving willing to negotiate although they dragged on for nearly a year. In the final offer, the Amberley Racing Club was given the opportunity to purchase a one-sixth share of the Rangiora racecourse for $50,000. The Amberley racecourse was auctioned off, and, with the proceeds, the Club was able to purchase that one-sixth share. Consequently many excellent Australian writers are here unrepresented, their work being perforce held over for The Second Bulletin Story Book, although it is work of a quality equal to that which is now given. The risk and expense of this publication are undertaken by The Bulletin Newspaper Company, Limited. Should any profits accrue, a share of forty per cent, will be credited to the writers represented. Owing to the length of time which, in some cases, has elapsed since the original publication in The Bulletin, the names and addresses of some of the writers have been lost sight of; and their work appears over pen-names, The editor will be glad if these writers will communicate with him and assist in completing the Biographical Index at the end of the book.

  • Gloaming by Kathleen Jones
Gloaming by Kathleen Jones Throughout the history of Thoroughbred racing there are many exceptional horses who have been held as examples of heroes whose names would live forever. We call them legends. But somehow, over time, the details of their successes have grown foggy until eventually the memory of these once-legendary animals lives only in the rarely-touched paper leaves of libraries. One horse in particular who deserves a better fate than anonymity is an Australian-bred gelding named Gloaming. At a time when Americans were celebrating the exploits of Man o'War and Exterminator, Australian and New Zealand race fans were going crazy for Gloaming. He won from 4 furlongs to a mile and half, setting time records at any distance. At one point his streak of victories had reached nineteen in a row. From ages 3 to 9 he began in 67 races, and won 57 of those. He was 2nd on nine other occasions. The one race in which he failed to run either first or second was a race at age 3 in which he fell. Gloaming was entirely of British descent, and was inbred 4x4 to Two Thousand Guineas runner-up, Sterling. He also carried duplications of Bend Or, Galopin, and Rosebery in his pedigree. The racing season of 1918/1919 in Australia and New Zealand got off to a slow start owing to an outbreak of influenza which necessitated the closing of several race meetings. So Gloaming's first start was a 9f prep stakes for the AJC Derby. He won his debut by 8 lengths then followed up with a new time record in the Australian Derby.
