Indeed, little was left to be done as Winx walked out onto the track for Waller who, as we’ve come to expect, was noticeably nervous. “It doesn’t get any easier, race day, but once the day is finally here, I’ve done my job. Hugh is a fantastic jockey and he’ll do the very best he can as he always does and we’re just in the lap of the racing gods now.” Waller said. However, once the race was run, Waller was effusive in his praise for the mare and horse racing itself. “We’ve got an amazing sport and it drives us all to reach our dreams,” an emotional Waller said. “It’s hard to explain, she’s our girl, she’s our daughter and our love child. She’s just a beautiful, beautiful animal.” Jockey Hugh Bowman has ridden Winx in every start since her 2015 Epsom Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) win and the association he has with the mare will enshrine his name in the record books. “As a child you grow up wanting fairytales to come true and I grew up wanting to be a jockey. Being in horse racing and being a jockey has been my life and my family’s life since I began 20 years ago, and this horse is just such an exceptional individual,” Bowman said. “To be associated with her comes with a huge level of responsibility, but at the end of the day I just have so much faith in her and I’ve just got to have her happy. “I can’t make miracles happen, all I can do is have her comfortable and let her do her job. What an amazing thrill she gives me,” Bowman said.
