The founding directional of our strategy: By 2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join us. This uploaded PDF has select pages from the larger strategy. You can read the strategy in full by going online, to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_2030. Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. wikimediafoundation.org · 1 Montgomery St, Suite 1600, San Francisco CA 94104 Wikimedia 2030 THE PATH TOWARDS OUR FUTURE Wikimedia 2030 Strategy What is the 2030 Strategy? For about two decades, Wikimedians have worked together to build the largest free knowledge resource in human history. During this time, we've grown from a small group of editors to a diverse community of editors, developers, affiliates, readers, advocates, donors, and partners. Today, we are more than a group of websites and projects. We have become a movement rooted in values and a powerful vision. All of us now have an opportunity to decide where we go from here. We can decide how to make our vision a reality. What will we have achieved in 10 years from now? Where are we now? Click on each arrow to know more about the different steps of the Strategy Process! Following a broad consultation in 2017, the first phase of the Movement Strategy process produced a Strategic Direction to guide the movement towards the future. Recommendations were drafted in the second phase to help guide us towards our strategic direction and strive for Knowledge Equity and Knowledge as a Service. Close to 100 Wikimedians came together in nine working groups to draft these recommendations. After multiple iterations and consultations with communities, the final ten these recommendations. After multiple iterations and consultations with communities, the final ten recommendations and principles were published in May 2020, thus concluding the second phase of the process. It's now time to create a plan to bring the Movement Strategy recommendations into reality, through the series of Transition events. All Wikimedians are welcome to take part in these online events to put together a plan for implementing the recommendations. Who is working on Strategy? Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy has been an open and participatory process. While supported by Wikimedia Foundation staff, Strategy has been based on a series of movement-wide consultations and high volunteer participation. In its first phase, over 1,800 statements from about one hundred communities were combined to create the Strategic Direction. In its second phase, more than a hundred volunteers, from various communities and affiliates, created together the recommendations and principles, informed by extensive movement feedback. In late 2020, a diverse groups of Wikimedians, with on-wiki engagement and guidance, created an outline for the online transition events. The process aims for even more openness and participation across the movement to shape our future, especially from project communities and underrepresented groups. You're invited to take part and join the Transition events. Writers' meeting in Harmonization Sprint in Tunis ESEAP Strategy Summit in December 2019 in Berlin September 2019. June 2019. To create this plan, movement-wide virtual events will kick off in September. We will use the Movement Strategy principles as a guiding framework to ensure the planning will be inclusive and will empower our diverse range of movement actors without leaving anyone behind. We lost the chance to work on this transition to implementation together in-person at the Wikimedia Summit. Yet we gained an opportunity to include a higher number and a more diverse profile of participants. Engaging with online contributors, technical developer communities, and smaller user groups in the planning process will be a key priority. Successful virtual engagement with a high number of diverse participants can be challenging. A Design Group will prepare for the virtual transition discussions. This group will consist of community members reflecting different parts and perspectives of the movement (see selection criteria). Anyone who is interested can contribute. We will publish regular updates of the preparation work and discussions so that anyone interested will be able to share insights and help improve the process even if not part of the design group itself. Plans are for a specified duration usually 3−5 years, executable, measurable, and matching the organizational capacity and resources. The strategic direction is broader and guides strategic plans on a longer term. Considering the 2030 horizon allows us to focus on aspirations for us all, beyond our individual roles and interests in the short term.
