Dead Heart - The Last Remnant Wiki - Characters, quests, walkthroughs, and more I liked the creepiness of the book, the strange characters and the descriptions were accurate. But I just felt it fell flat at the end. Nevertheless I did finish it. May 26, Shay Noble rated it it was amazing. Loved it! It was a brilliant read; written superbly and carrying a fantastic storyline that included just enough humour to balance out the quite terrifying side of the book. Some parts were really rather gruesome but it added so much to the storyline and made the ending quite a fast paced, page turning frantic read to find out what was going to happen. I thought it was great and would definitely recommend it. I'll also be keeping my eyes peeled for other Douglas Kennedy novels. Mar 24, Zoe rated it it was amazing. A brilliant yet quick read! I would have loved for this whole story to have been double the length as I really enjoyed the plot and would have been interested to hear more about life in the 'commune'. Brilliant, Brilliant! Genuine tension and suspense at the end and an ending that left you relieved but still letting those goosebumps creep in! Dec 16, Andy Bird rated it it was ok Shelves: book-club , weatherbys , life-experiences , cultural , 4. Not good. This is a bizarre book. The story is quite weird although it does have some interesting facets, you do wonder if the premise would actually work. Not the worst book in the world, but not one I really enjoyed and defiantly not one I would recommend. Feb 05, Helen rated it really liked it. If Hammer Horror filmed a Lonely Planet guide to the Australian Outback, paying homage to Deliverance and Walkabout, the result would probably be similar to this! Apr 19, Sue rated it it was amazing. I'm a great fan of Douglas Kennedy and this certainly didn't disappoint. A fast moving story - brilliant. Oct 05, Vivian rated it liked it. Not the quality Kennedy usually produces. This one was really out there. I gave it three stars because it was entertaining. May 15, Judy rated it did not like it. Didn't actually read past the first couple of chapters I think I picked this book up something like 20 years ago based on my enjoyment of the author's travel writing -- it's sat on my shelves unread until two days ago. Although now an established and successful novelist, this was his debut -- and it's a crisply effective fast-paced story that, had it been written in a different era, might have been classified as pulp fiction. Forty-something hack journalist Neil has a mid-life crisis while en route to a new job, and impulsively decides to flee America and fly to Australia. After getting his bearings in Darwin, he decides to buy an old VW van and drive across the Outback. Without spoiling things, I'll just say that he meets a young Aussie woman, and although they end up in the Outback, it's not quite the adventure he was looking for What follows is a fair amount of page-turning fun, as he plots his escape from an over-the-top predicament. While I enjoyed the book, it's very heavily influenced by another debut novel. Australian writer Kenneth Cook's novel Wake In Fright, also features an educated outsider who gets stuck in the Outback with men who get offended that he doesn't want to share their idea of camaraderie. Both books also feature somewhat twisted sexual situations, as well as prominent use of kangaroos. Cook's book was made into an terrifying film in as well as a forthcoming miniseries , and Kennedy's was also made into a more slapstick one in Kennedy provided the Foreword to a recently discovered manuscript of Cook's, published as Fear is the Driver, so I'm certain he drew inspiration from him. Feb 09, Ann Webb rated it it was amazing Shelves: fiction , relationships. I have never read a book in three hours before so this is a first. Looking for a book to perhaps while away my time this week, I picked up The Dead Heart, which I had bought while combing through Goodreads review, and before I knew it, I was on page 37 in my first read. From there, I could not stop. Reading the story of Nick Hawthorne's trip to Australia on a whim was so unique and filled with such good writing and witticism that I couldn't help but keep going. Nick is a man sick of his string o I have never read a book in three hours before so this is a first. Nick is a man sick of his string of newspaper jobs in a string of equally uninteresting American towns when he chances on a map of Australia and is intrigued by the sheer vast emptiness of it. He immediately embarks on what he believes will be an eye-opening adventure. Please read this for the sheer novelty and edge of your seat quality of what really happens when you think the grass is greener somewhere else. May 08, Sophie rated it really liked it. I was surprised that this was a fictional story despite the far-fetched plot as it is written so convincingly. I had not read the blurb or reviews of this book so I had no idea what to expect. It is full of dark humour which is my sort of comedy and is very much a page turner, particularly the final part of the book. It is terrifying yet entertaining at the same time. As someone who is planning some solo travel next year, it probably wasn't the most comforting book to read! Jul 31, Dotty Mrs rated it it was amazing. This is the most unusual book that I have ever read - and yet - having travelled on a Contiki bus with some of the more terrifying Aussie women - very much on the mark. I don't want to give away the plot, but again, it is an "un put down able" situation with Douglas Kennedy. It takes a little while to get into it, but once he picks up the Aussie I just loved this book so much. Jun 29, Dani rated it really liked it. Really interesting book. I was hooked. Aug 05, Anji rated it it was amazing. A superb tale set in the back of beyond in Australia. The start of the book is pretty weak but stick with it. Nov 03, Catherine rated it it was amazing. This story had a creative plot combined with witty humor. A great combination that keeps you reading! Mar 31, Bernie rated it really liked it. Scary stuff! Jun 02, Margob99 rated it really liked it. Dark, sick and a little twisted. I loved it and gave it less than five stars only because of the too-excellent descriptions of ordure. Mar 10, Kayleigh rated it really liked it. At pages this was a short, quick little read and as a big fan of Douglas Kennedy I wondered if it could match up to his other novels being so thin and coming across as more of a 'short story' initially. However, it was actually the perfect length for the story Kennedy wanted to tell here and absolutely as gripping and as cleverly written as his other books. I very much enjoyed reading about the often tense and sometimes quite horrifying struggles of Nick's time or nightmare in the Australi At pages this was a short, quick little read and as a big fan of Douglas Kennedy I wondered if it could match up to his other novels being so thin and coming across as more of a 'short story' initially.
