I liked the creepiness of the book, the strange characters and the descriptions were accurate. But I just felt it fell flat at the end. Nevertheless I did finish it. May 26, Shay Noble rated it it was amazing. Loved it! It was a brilliant read; written superbly and carrying a fantastic storyline that included just enough humour to balance out the quite terrifying side of the book. Some parts were really rather gruesome but it added so much to the storyline and made the ending quite a fast paced, page turning frantic read to find out what was going to happen. I thought it was great and would definitely recommend it. I'll also be keeping my eyes peeled for other Douglas Kennedy novels. Mar 24, Zoe rated it it was amazing. A brilliant yet quick read! I would have loved for this whole story to have been double the length as I really enjoyed the plot and would have been interested to hear more about life in the 'commune'. Brilliant, Brilliant! Genuine tension and suspense at the end and an ending that left you relieved but still letting those goosebumps creep in! Dec 16, Andy Bird rated it it was ok Shelves: book-club , weatherbys , life-experiences , cultural , 4. Not good. This is a bizarre book. The story is quite weird although it does have some interesting facets, you do wonder if the premise would actually work. Not the worst book in the world, but not one I really enjoyed and defiantly not one I would recommend. Feb 05, Helen rated it really liked it. If Hammer Horror filmed a Lonely Planet guide to the Australian Outback, paying homage to Deliverance and Walkabout, the result would probably be similar to this! Apr 19, Sue rated it it was amazing. I'm a great fan of Douglas Kennedy and this certainly didn't disappoint. A fast moving story - brilliant. Oct 05, Vivian rated it liked it. Not the quality Kennedy usually produces. This one was really out there. I gave it three stars because it was entertaining. May 15, Judy rated it did not like it. Didn't actually read past the first couple of chapters I think I picked this book up something like 20 years ago based on my enjoyment of the author's travel writing -- it's sat on my shelves unread until two days ago. Forty-something hack journalist Neil has a mid-life crisis while en route to a new job, and impulsively decides to flee America and fly to Australia. After getting his bearings in Darwin, he decides to buy an old VW van and drive across the Outback. Without spoiling things, I'll just say that he meets a young Aussie woman, and although they end up in the Outback, it's not quite the adventure he was looking for What follows is a fair amount of page-turning fun, as he plots his escape from an over-the-top predicament. While I enjoyed the book, it's very heavily influenced by another debut novel. Australian writer Kenneth Cook's novel Wake In Fright, also features an educated outsider who gets stuck in the Outback with men who get offended that he doesn't want to share their idea of camaraderie. Both books also feature somewhat twisted sexual situations, as well as prominent use of kangaroos. Cook's book was made into an terrifying film in as well as a forthcoming miniseries , and Kennedy's was also made into a more slapstick one in Kennedy provided the Foreword to a recently discovered manuscript of Cook's, published as Fear is the Driver, so I'm certain he drew inspiration from him. Feb 09, Ann Webb rated it it was amazing Shelves: fiction , relationships. I have never read a book in three hours before so this is a first. Looking for a book to perhaps while away my time this week, I picked up The Dead Heart, which I had bought while combing through Goodreads review, and before I knew it, I was on page 37 in my first read. From there, I could not stop. Reading the story of Nick Hawthorne's trip to Australia on a whim was so unique and filled with such good writing and witticism that I couldn't help but keep going. Nick is a man sick of his string o I have never read a book in three hours before so this is a first. Nick is a man sick of his string of newspaper jobs in a string of equally uninteresting American towns when he chances on a map of Australia and is intrigued by the sheer vast emptiness of it. He immediately embarks on what he believes will be an eye-opening adventure. Please read this for the sheer novelty and edge of your seat quality of what really happens when you think the grass is greener somewhere else. May 08, Sophie rated it really liked it. I was surprised that this was a fictional story despite the far-fetched plot as it is written so convincingly. I had not read the blurb or reviews of this book so I had no idea what to expect. It is full of dark humour which is my sort of comedy and is very much a page turner, particularly the final part of the book. It is terrifying yet entertaining at the same time. As someone who is planning some solo travel next year, it probably wasn't the most comforting book to read! Jul 31, Dotty Mrs rated it it was amazing. This is the most unusual book that I have ever read - and yet - having travelled on a Contiki bus with some of the more terrifying Aussie women - very much on the mark. I don't want to give away the plot, but again, it is an "un put down able" situation with Douglas Kennedy. It takes a little while to get into it, but once he picks up the Aussie I just loved this book so much. Jun 29, Dani rated it really liked it. Really interesting book. I was hooked. Aug 05, Anji rated it it was amazing. A superb tale set in the back of beyond in Australia. The start of the book is pretty weak but stick with it. Nov 03, Catherine rated it it was amazing. This story had a creative plot combined with witty humor. A great combination that keeps you reading! Mar 31, Bernie rated it really liked it. Scary stuff! Jun 02, Margob99 rated it really liked it. Dark, sick and a little twisted. I loved it and gave it less than five stars only because of the too-excellent descriptions of ordure. Mar 10, Kayleigh rated it really liked it. At pages this was a short, quick little read and as a big fan of Douglas Kennedy I wondered if it could match up to his other novels being so thin and coming across as more of a 'short story' initially. However, it was actually the perfect length for the story Kennedy wanted to tell here and absolutely as gripping and as cleverly written as his other books. I very much enjoyed reading about the often tense and sometimes quite horrifying struggles of Nick's time or nightmare in the Australian desert. I could actually feel the despair, the hopelessness, the relief and the fear of this character as Douglas Kennedy did what he does best and weaved a gripping tale that established once again that he is a master of the written word and for making the reader care about the people and situations depicted in his stories. A very strong although short book which painted vivid and sometimes really quite horrible pictures in my mind. Apr 15, Liam rated it it was amazing. Incredibly well written! Imaginative and descriptive, the way this is written makes you feel like you are one of the characters themselves. Dec 29, Hannah Polley rated it really liked it Shelves: fiction , douglas-kennedy. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. It's dirty. It's offputting but also sexy at the same time. I'm still coming to terms with the fact that I found Branek quit My immediate reaction after reading this book was: holy shitballs. I'm still coming to terms with the fact that I found Branek quite erotic, even especially when he was doing This book was sexual and sensual when in parts it had absolutely no right to be. And I ship it. He actually reminded me a bit of my beloved Val , except a thousand times scarier and more deadly. His inability to hold himself back from doing anything he wanted was hot, even when it was terrifying. I'm very keen to read more from this world. I want to know about how long Jared was stalking Leila for. Or I'm down to just read some more scenes where Branek shared toys with Tristan. Or look, if we're going to go dark, why not give me some dirty shit about Branek and Gus? Or Tristan and Gus. Basically I just want anything else from this world, but bonus points if it's porn. I am friends with Heather here on Goodreads, but this has not influenced my rating in any way because she hasn't sent me any mint-chocolate-chip ice cream. View all 12 comments. Oh, god, he could have licked each one of them from head to toe, tainting their purity with each swipe of his tongue before gorging on their blood. Innocence had never appealed to him but damn, the things he could do to corrupt it. I always told myself I would never write a series. I just didn't want to bother with that. My books would always be complete stories. But then. My friend Nenia went and liked one of my villains so much that she asked me to write a book about him. She asked again and again, until finally it started to seem like something I could do. And that is how I found myself imagining Branek's twisted backstory. This is a rather self-indulgent book filled with sex, murder, and the occasional existentialism that I require of vampire stories. It's a prequel to Dreams for the Dead , although I think it's probably better read as a sequel. It begins when Branek becomes a vampire, and ends at the point where he shows up in DftD. He's a psychotic murderer whose first priority is always his family, even though he constantly clashes with them. His favorite things are violence and death. I wasn't sure I would be able to do Branek's character justice, but I ended up being really happy with this! He was fun to write, and I also enjoyed fleshing out the unruly teenage versions of Tristan, Augusta, and Jared. The book will be live in just a few days is available on Amazon now! It is a very short book - less than pages - and the plot is crazy but it is a fun read, both suspenseful and funny. The book is about a journalist called Nick who has decided to do some travelling around Australia. He meets a girl called Angie and he has what he thinks will be a brief fling with her. However, when he tries to dump her, she drugs him, kidnaps him and takes him to a hick Au I have read a few Douglas Kennedy books now and I have really enjoyed them and this one is no different. However, when he tries to dump her, she drugs him, kidnaps him and takes him to a hick Australian town in the Outback and when he wakes up, he discovers he is a prisoner in the town and married to Angie and she is pregnant. Nick's character is likeable enough for you to root for him and Angie is horrid enough for you to want her to get some comeuppance but mostly it is just a funny story and it keeps you guessing on how Nick will escape. The only nice character of the book seemed to be Krystal so it was a shame when she ended up being killed. Nick had a happy ending and I was pleased with the ending to the book.
