    ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Filmic farewell to David Gulpilil is ‘his last dance, his last song’ By Paul Byrnes May 26, 2021 My Name is Gulpilil ★★★★ Rated M, 101 minutes, in cinemas This one had me at hello. In the first shot, David Gulpilil, in winter coat and mittens, walks down a country road. The camera is about 50 metres behind him and his gait is slow. Then we see why: he’s following an emu, which was obscured by his body. When the actor stops and turns back up the road, the emu does too. They move in step, as if in a duet. He just smiles, as if to say ‘of course we are’. David Gulpilil in a scene from My Name is Gulpilil. “This is my film,” he says. My Name is Gulpilil is the actor’s fond farewell, his valediction, his living obituary. At about 67 − he’s not quite sure of his age − he has lung cancer, and a number of other ailments. They will take him out soon, he tells us a number of times. He seems to want to say he’s OK with that: he has had a charmed life as a dancer, actor, singer, storyteller. “My father taught me how to dance and how to sing, and how to relate to the didgeridoo and the click stick, and the rhythm of the song of culture, the song of the ceremony … I’m the greatest dancer in the world.” He pauses for effect − “Just for me, though …” The film comes from people he has worked with for more than 20 years.

Unter anderem wurden in Kurzreferaten amerikanische Road Movies vorgestellt und auf ihre kulturellen Implikationen hin gedeutet (Freiheitsdrang, Initiation, Suche nach Identität etc.). Die Möglichkeit einer Vertiefung dieser Thematik am Beispiel des indischen Films Road, Movie traf auf großes Interesse der Schülerinnen und Schüler, wobei insbesondere von Bedeutung war, dass es sich bei Road, Movie nicht um einen Bollywood Film handelt, sondern um eine kleinere Produktion.     Every Good Boy Deserves Fun: One Dog’s Journey to the North “North...of all geographical terms it is the most personal, the most emotional, the most elusive. And perhaps the one which evokes the most powerful feelings” (Davidson, 2009) Davidson’s description of the powerful symbolism of the North as a destination, as a dream, echoes the romantic hyperbole of the early polar explorers searching for the last untamed wilderness in an increasingly industrial world; “the great adventure of the ice, deep and pure as infinity...nature itself in its profundity” (Nansen,1894). It establishes North as the direction of adventures. This chapter will examine The North as the site of mystery and adventure… one of the last wildernesses to explore but one which is paradoxically comfortable; populated only sparsely by oddly familiar characters. Through the examination of the author’s own short animation North, it will look at the use of narrative devices and media references to reflect on the symbolism of the North –and investigate the British relationship with it; not with the media construct of The North-South divide but rather with a broader, more complex idea of a conceptual, an imagined North-ness. This is seen in relation to certain stereotypes of iconic Britishness – our relationship with the sea, and its poetic evocation through the shipping forecast, with our dogs... and with our TV-facing sofas. Drawing on its author’s own travel experiences, and field research in Norway and Iceland, the short animation North can be viewed as a Road Movie, a Hero’s Journey, with Colin the dog as unlikely hero.

For me, it is the most difficult film I have made, in the most foreign land I've been to...and it is Australia.’ – Rolf de Heer Directors’ Q & A Q: What was the inspiration behind this documentary? And/or how did it come about? The documentary is a companion to the feature film Ten Canoes. Ten Canoes is an in-language indigenous tragi-comedy set in the historical (pre-white settlement) and mythical past of the Ganalbingu (Yolngu) people. It is a cautionary tale of love, lust and revenge gone wrong. Although financed, the film spent three years in the development phase. There were a number of reasons why but one of them included consolidating the early rapport and trust between Rolf, his team and the community. During this time, Rolf began visiting the communities regularly and would return with new sets of working challenges and with stories full of adventure. It became apparent that a compelling documentary could be made in its own right. Rolf approached SBS Independent, investors in the feature film Ten Canoes, about documenting the already crazy yet exhilarating journey.

This study explores the rise of contemporary Australian horror production: emerging production and distribution models; the films produced; and the industrial, market and technological forces driving production. Australian horror production is a vibrant production sector comprising mainstream and underground spheres of production. Mainstream horror production is an independent, internationally oriented production sector on the margins of the Australian film industry producing titles such as Wolf Creek (2005) and Rogue (2007), while underground production is a fan-based, indie filmmaking subculture, producing credit-card films such as I know How Many Runs You Scored Last Summer (2006) and The Killbillies (2002).     Area of Study 2 Article on One Night The Moon by Maria Joseph Context: The Imaginative Landscape Article by Maria Joseph ONE NIGHT THE MOON Directed by Rachel Perkins One Night the Moon is directed by Rachel Perkins and was released in 2001. Perkins is an Indigenous Australian, an Arrernte woman from the Central Desert region near Alice Springs. She grew up in Canberra, the daughter of renowned Aboriginal activist Charles Perkins, who died whilst the film was in production. One Night the Moon is dedicated to his memory. Like her father, Perkins is concerned with the social and political rights of Aboriginals in contemporary Australia. Her films Radiance (1998) and Bran Nue Dae (2010) centre on Aboriginal issues, and her television series The First Australians (2008) gives an Aboriginal viewpoint of Australian history. Paul Kelly is a principal actor and musician in One Night the Moon, playing the father, Jim. As a musician he is known for his insightful lyrics that comment on modern Australian life. At the time of making One Night the Moon, Kelly was married to Kaarin Fairfax, who plays Rose. Their actual daughter, Memphis, plays Emily. The Imaginative Landscape in One Night the Moon At one level ‘The Imaginative Landscape’ can be simply interpreted as having to do with representations of the land. Writers and directors create the settings of their narratives in order to convey meaning. We all know that a thunderstorm or wild wind suggests something dramatic or tragic is likely to happen in the story. A narrative with a negative outcome or a critical message may be set in a landscape that conveys pessimism, such as a grungy cityscape.
