Burge Doctor of Philosophy The University of Edinburgh 2009 A loose-leaf from a MS of al-Qazwīnī’s, cAjā’ib fī makhlūqāt (British Library) Source: Du Ry, Carel J., Art of Islam (New York: Abrams, 1971), p. 188 0.1 Abstract This thesis presents a commentary with selected translations of Jalāl al-Dīn cAbd al- Raḥmān al-Suyūṭī’s Al-Ḥabā’ik fī akhbār al-malā’ik (The Arrangement of the Traditions about Angels). The work is a collection of around 750 ḥadīth about angels, followed by a postscript (khātima) that discusses theological questions regarding their status in Islam. The first section of this thesis looks at the state of the study of angels in Islam, which has tended to focus on specific issues or narratives. However, there has been little study of the angels in Islamic tradition outside studies of angels in the Qur’an and eschatological literature. This thesis hopes to present some of this more general material about angels. The following two sections of the thesis present an analysis of the whole work. The first of these two sections looks at the origin of Muslim beliefs about angels, focusing on angelic nomenclature and angelic iconography. The second attempts to understand the message of al-Suyūṭī’s collection and the work’s purpose, through a consideration of the roles of angels in everyday life and ritual. -

An Overview of the Qur’ān By Colin D. Smith 2 Introduction Islam is a centuries-old religion, and Muslims have been a part of Western society for nearly as long, and yet despite this, until relatively recently many have not felt the need to understand this religion and its teachings. Now it is evident that an understanding of Islam is vital not only for people to be able to relate to the growing number of Muslims in the West, but also for Christians to be able to effectively reach out both in ministry and in witness to Islam’s adherents. The first thing that needs to be understood is that Islam is not a religion based upon a person. While Mohammad is greatly revered among orthodox Muslims, and while he is considered to be a prophet chosen by Allāh to be an instrument of revelation, his role is simply that of revealer. He is an apostle, a messenger, a mortal man with a special commission. Essentially, Islam is about submission to Allāh and His commands as He has revealed Himself in the Qur’ān, the Islamic scriptures. Islamic law, society, and culture are founded upon the Qur’ān and its principles as elucidated by Mohammad and his followers. If one is, therefore, to gain an understanding of this religion and its adherents, it is vital that one understands the context and message of its scripture. The purpose of this paper is to provide the reader with a grasp of the history, structure, and content of the Qur’ān. While the author is coming from a Christian perspective, the intent of this work is not one of Christian apologetic. -

Philosophy 103 PREREQUISITES FOR THE FORMATION OF AbU MANSUR AL-MATURIDI’S TEACHING AND ITS INFLUENCE ON THE SPIRITUAL KNOWLEDGE OF KAZAKHS Karatyshkanova K.R., Myrzabekov M.M. Kh.A. Yasawi International Kazakh-Turkish University, Turkistan, e-mail: [email protected], [email protected] The article outlines the prerequisites for the formation of religious views of the great scientist Abu Mansur al-Maturidi and the role of the environment, the time and space where he lived, and where various religions and cultures coexisted. Special attention is paid to the comparative analysis of the text of Abu Mansur al-Maturidi’s book “Kitab al-Tawhid” and the dogmas of such religions as Zoroastrism, Manichaeism, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Tengrianism. The characteristics of various debates and ideological discussions aimed at forming the principles of the teachings of Abu Mansur al-Maturidi are given. It is claimed that the source of the worldview of Kazakh thinkers is the teaching of Abu Mansur al-Maturidi, who was able to synthesize issues of religion and morality. INTEGRASI ALIRAN PEMIKIRAN KEISLAMAN: PEMIKIRAN QADARIYAH DAN JABARIYAH YANG BERSANDAR DIBALIK LEGITIMASI AL-QUR’AN Suhaimi Universitas Madura Pamekasan Email: [email protected] Abstrak: Artikel ini sengaja penulis angkat dalam rangka untuk memperdalam khasanah keilmuan yang berkaitan dengan persoalan aliran- aliran pemikiran yang pernah berkembang pada masa pasca-wafatnya Rasulullah saw., khususnya Qadariyah dan Jabariyah. Disamping itu penulis juga tertarik terhadap pemikiran kedua aliran tersebut yang saling bertentangan secara ekstrim. Aliran Qadariyah berpendapat bahwa manusia mempunyai kebebasan berkehendak dan melakukan perbuatan, tidak ada sangkut- pautnya dengan kehendak Allah. Namun justru Jabariyah berpendapat lain, bahwa manusia tidak mempunyai daya dan kehendak apapun, semuanya karena atas kehendak Allah. Oleh karenanya dua pendapat yang berseberangan ini perlu adanya integrasi pemikiran agar dapat ditemukan titik temu keduanya. Adapun metode yang dipakai dalam artikel ini dilakukan dengan cara mengkaji literatur-literatur yang berkaitan dengan sejarah pemikiran Qadariyah dan Jabariyah yang kemudian dilakukan semacam interpretasi baik secara objektif maupun subjektif. Kata kunci: Qadariyah, Jabariyah dan Integrasi Pemikiran. Abstract: This article is deliberately adopted by the author in order to deepen the scientific treasures related to the problems of thought of schools that have developed in the post-Prophet Muhammad era, especially Qadariyah and Jabariyah. Besides that, the writer is also interested in the thoughts of the two schools that are in extreme conflict. The Qadariyah sect argues that humans have the freedom to desire and do deeds, nothing to do with God's will. But instead Jabariyah argues differently, that humans do not have any power and will, all because of God's will. Therefore, these two opposing opinions need integration of ideas so that they can be found at the meeting point. -

Imanbayeva Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Kazakhstan, Almaty, е-mail: [email protected] THE TEACHING OF KALAM IN THE HISTORY OF ISLAMIC PHILOSOPHY This article reveals the importance of Islam in the formation and development of the Arab Caliphate. The wars of conquest of the Arab state were fought under the banner of Islam. All those who converted to Islam began to be called Muslims (Muslim – devotee, obedient to God). Having emerged at the beginning of the seventh century, in Western Arabia, in Mecca, by the end of the noted century, Islam spread to the territory of Iran and Central Asia. At the initial stage of the existence of the new Muslim state, spread over such a vast territory, the primary task was to adapt the Quranic precepts to the new realities. The art of interpreting the Qur’an and collecting hadiths were cultivated. The political struggle in the Arab Caliphate was conducted in the form of philosophical and religious disputes. The debaters in discussions on theological and philosophical topics pursued completely earthly goals. Ethnic diver- sity and confessional pluralism that developed in the empire also did not help stabilize the situation. A characteristic feature of Islamic philosophy is its polemical orientation; this is the logic of its develop- ment. Dissatisfaction with the decisions of previous schools on fundamental philosophical issues gave rise to the need for the emergence of new schools and teachings. -

Tablighi’s strong commitment to a style of dakwa based on their reformist attitude and ő exible practice of mazhab (schools of thought) through a process of ‘demazhabizasi’ (demahzhabization), has attracted interest from a range of people. Tablighi guarantees the freedom for its members to embrace their choice of mazhab, and prefers its proselytizers to follow the mazhab of the communities in which they preach in order to avoid religious debates. is article aims to understand the concept of ‘demazhabisasi’ that has developed in Tablihgi and the ways in which Tablighi members work to overcome and prevent conő ict due to the diff erent understandings of each mazhab. e material sacriŇ ces Tablighi proselytizers make together with their reliance on and submission to God for their economy, has led this research to examine the concept of a ‘divine economy’ that has developed in Tablighi com- munities.
