PILLARS OF STRENGTH 2011 FLOOD MEMORIAL In January 2011, devastating floods inundated townships and cities across south east Queensland. Thirty-three people died during the floods, which have been described as the “largest disaster event” in the state's history, with the damage bill estimated at more than $5 billion. The Somerset region was hit particularly hard, with some areas flooding twice during the peak of the catastrophe. Through the fearful days of the floods and in the confronting aftermath, residents proved their reputation for stoic determination and generous community spirit. The making of this memorial is indicative of their resilience. The Pillars of Strength Memorial is an innovative multipurpose public art space created by Somerset artists featuring local materials, imagery and traditions that celebrate the cultural diversity and vibrancy of the arts in the region. This memorial project is symbolic of the community coming together to support each other during times of need. Partipants wish to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the Somerset region. The Pillars of Strength project has been made possible through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) Category C funding provided by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Community Development and Recovery Package.
