Part 1 – Church Becomes Powerful Institution Evidence of Rome’s power grab • In 2nd century we see bishops over regions; people looked to them for guidance. • Around 195AD there was dispute over which day to celebrate Passover (14th Nissan vs. Sunday) • Polycarp said 14th Nissan, but now Victor (Bishop of Rome) liked Sunday. • A council was convened to decide, and they decided on Sunday. • But bishops of Asia continued the Passover on 14th Nissan. • Eusebius wrote what happened next: “Thereupon Victor, who presided over the church at Rome, immediately attempted to cut off from the common unity the parishes of all Asia, with the churches that agreed with them, as heterodox [heretics]; and he wrote letters and declared all the brethren there wholly excommunicate.” (Eus., Hist. eccl. 5.24.9) Everyone started looking to Rome to settle disputes • Rome was always ending up on the winning side in their handling of controversial topics. 1 • So through a combination of the fact that Rome was the most important city in the ancient world and its bishop was always right doctrinally then everyone started looking to Rome. • So Rome took that power and developed it into the Roman Catholic Church by the 600s. Church granted power to rule • Constantine gave the pope power to rule over Italy, Jerusalem, Constantinople and Alexandria. -
A Christian Approach to Literary Criticism: a Non- Moralistic View
A CHRISTIAN APPROACH TO LITERARY CRITICISM: A NON- MORALISTIC VIEW W. G .J. PretorÍUS M. A.-student, Department o f English. PU for CHE The common question: “Is a Christian approach to literary criticism feasible?” may be more profitably reformulated as: “How should a Christian approach to literary criticism be?”. It is clearly not a matter of the possibility of such an approach, but a challenge of formulating a new critical theory. “What could be simpler and easier than to say what a work of art is, whether it is good or bad, and why it is so?” (Olson, 1976, p. 307). The problem of value judgments in literary criticism, contrary to Olson’s view, has proved to be the most complex of all literary problems throughout the history of criticism. It is also thi central issue underlying the distinction between different approaches to literatur The formalist critic is traditionally reticent about value judgments and con centrates upon close reading of texts and implicit evaluation. Contemporary formalists, however, tend to move away from the ideal of critical objectivity On the other hand, the moralist critic is primarily concerned with the purpose of the literary work. In Naaldekoker, D. J. Opperman seriously doubts the possibility of a Calvinist approach to art, which he regards as a contradictio in terminis (pp. 61-63). I shall attempt in this essay to show that there is a valid literary criticism which is neither exclusively based on aesthetic judgment, nor an attempt to subordinate literature to religion in a moralistic way, and that such criticism originates from a C hristian vision o f life. -

136 Journal of Biblical Literature The principal shortcoming of this book is that it does not adequately take into account the results of the current Israeli excavations at Shiloh. Schley dismisses "the claimed (emphasis mine) archaeological evidence for a massive destruction of the site during Iron I" without reviewing the evidence, and he takes refuge in the position that "Iron I extends from the end of the thirteenth century BCE to the middle of the tenth, and an Iron I destruction layer theoretically could occur at any time during this period" (p. 196). Unfortunately, the work is marred by numerous typographical errors and several inconsistencies in transliterations. Still, it is a valuable study which merits the careful attention of scholars. Sheffield: JSOT Press, 1989. Pp. 201. ?22.50 ($33.50). The first two chapters of Genesis raise innumerable problems for the student of biblical literature. Not the least of these are the basic meaning and etymology of five key words (tohu, bohu, teh6m, 'ed, 'eden), the relationship between these Hebrew concepts and proposed Near Eastern parallels, and the overall issue of earth and waters in the stories of creation. These questions form the basis of David Tsumura'smonograph. As the book's sub- heading suggests, the author is interested mainly in presenting the linguistic evidence relating to these issues. Only after a thorough investigation along these lines, he believes, can biblical scholars then proceed to the larger issues of theology and mythico-religious thought. -

The Symbolic Structure of Andrew Lytle's The Velvet Horn Anne Foata Implied in the very title of The Velvet Horn and emphasized throughout the narrative by the mythic allusions of its central intelligence, a network of symbolic representations, all bearing upon the central image of edenic wholeness, is intricately interwoven in the narrative structure of Andrew Lytle's noveJ.l Their purpose is to confer the authenticity and immutability of an archetypal experience on the limited events of both the main and the secondary (or "enveloping") actions of the novel (the story of Lucius Cree's initiation into manhood and of his mother and uncle's fall from innocence some twenty years earlier), to draw them out of the human time and endow them with eternal significance. -

JMR@KaZaA 1 THE ADVENTURES OF TOM BOMBADIL Old Tom Bombadil was a merry felow; bright blue his jacket was and his bloots were yellow, green were his girdle and his breeches all of leather; he wore in his tall hat a swan-wing feather. He lived up under Hill, where the Withywindle ran from a grassy well down into the dingle. Old Tom in summertime walked about the meadows gathering the buttercups, running after shadows, tickling the bumblebees that buzzed among the flowers, sitting by the waterside for hours upon hours. There his beard dangled long down into the water: up came Goldberry, the River-woman's daughter; pulled Tom's hanging hair. In he went a-wallowing under the water-lilies, bubbling and a-swallowing. 'Hey, Tom Bombadil! Whither are you going?' said fair Goldberry. 'Bubbles you are blowing, frightening the finny fish and the brown water- rat, startling the dabchicks, and drowning your feather-hat!' 'You bring it back again, there's a pretty maiden!' said Tom Bombadil. 'I do not care for wading. Go down! Sleep again where the pools are shady far below willow-roots, little water-lady!' Back to her mother's house in the deepest hollow swam young Goldberry. But Tom, he would not follow; on knotted willow-roots he sat in sunny weather, drying his yellow boots and his draggled feather. Up woke Willow-man, began upon his singing, sang Tom fast asleep under branches swinging; in a crack caught him tight: snick! it closed together, trapped Tom Bombadil, coat and hat and feather.
