Jessica Rezunyk Washington University in St. Louis December 2015 v Dedicated to Anne Whitmore, who shared my passions for literature and biology, and to Steve Haddad and Randy Brooks, who inspired those passions in the first place. vi ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Science and Nature in the Medieval Ecological Imagination by Jessica Rezunyk Doctor of Philosophy in English & American Literature Washington University in St. Louis, 2015 Professor David Lawton, Chair This dissertation explores the intersections between nature and culture in medieval literature and art with particular focus on Geoffrey Chaucer’s House of Fame, the thirteenth- century French Bible Moralisée (Vienna, Österreichische Nationalbibliothek Codex Vindobonensis 2554), and William Langland’s Piers Plowman. Current academic paradigms tend to place the study of nature firmly within the sciences and the study of culture firmly within the humanities, creating a gap between the fields that effectively isolates their respective methodologies and vocabularies from one another. This dissertation seeks to bridge that gap between the sciences and the humanities by approaching medieval literature through the lens of studies in science, technology, and society (STS). Examination of medieval literature reveals just some of the ways that the sciences and humanities overlap to create permeable intellectual spaces for the study of nature and culture. Framed within the ecological analyses of G. Evelyn Hutchinson, this dissertation demonstrates how scientific topics can be approached from a literary perspective and how, in turn, literature can be read scientifically. vii This project uses a highly interdisciplinary approach that relies heavily on the theories in STS developed by Bruno Latour. Latour’s theories, typically applied to writing and procedures found in modern science, provide the initial groundwork for establishing the connections between nature and culture in medieval literary sources. Because much of the previous work on science in the Middle Ages has primarily focused on the history of science through the study of educational texts and treatises, there is relatively little material available that takes on scientific observation of the natural world in medieval literature, poetry, and art. As such, the modern divide between the sciences and the humanities anachronistically separates nature and culture in ways that often unnecessarily isolate the two fields in medieval studies. By first problematizing and historicizing the academic development of science and its perceived animosity with the humanities, I strive to break down modern paradigms of knowledge to demonstrate how a medieval understanding of human culture was inextricably connected to perceptions of the natural world. The study of Chaucer’s House of Fame takes on special attention to the roles of language and translation in literature. My subsequent examination of the Bible Moralisée moves beyond the constraints of language to explore visual representations of science and nature in an explicitly Christian context. Building on the religious influences of medieval portrayals of ecology and science, I investigate Langland’s use of natural imagery in his portrayal of religious enlightenment in Piers Plowman. Each of these works demonstrates how the medieval imagination established a versatile permeability between science and the humanities that is far less common in the studies of modern science and literature. viii Chapter 1 (Re)Defining Science and Medieval Ecology “The imagination is most accurately excited by familiar things, which are well enough known to be picked up from a world where they lie at random, taken apart, reconstructed and redesigned, and put in exact places where they are appropriate.” - George Evelyn Hutchinson1 Research for this project began in 2009, the year that marked the fiftieth anniversary of C. We look back at it across 500 or so years of European global expansion, a period characterized by systematically pursued explo- ration, trade, colonization, missionary activity, emigration and immi- gration, grand tours, and tourism, not to mention the mass displace- ments caused by war, famine, and ethnic cleansing. Yet, even leav- ing aside the large-scale medieval movements of peoples (‘Germans’, Vikings, Magyars), one can say that, despite genuine differences in scale and scope, people travelled a great deal in the medieval world and more than a few of them did so extensively, sometimes even in considerable numbers. Not just pilgrims, but also missionaries, scholars, and merchants made their way by land, river, and sea to destinations both far and near. Marco Polo is only the most famous medieval traveller nowadays, but there were others who made remarkable journeys of their own: Margery Kempe from England to Jerusalem, Rome, Compostella, and Prussia in the early 15th century, for example; or Friar Odoric of Pordenone from Italy to Khanbaliq (Beijing) in the early 14th century; or Leifr Eiríksson from Norway to Vinland around the year 1000. Nor should one forget the great Muslim travelers like Ibn Battuta and Ibn Jubayr, or the Jewish travelers like Abraham ben Jacob and Benjamin of Tudela.

    Troubadour Poetry: An Intercultural Experience By Said I. Abdelwahed Professor of English Literature English Department Faculty of Arts, Al-Azhar University Gaza - Palestine ABSTRACT: This is a reading of the intercultural experience of the medieval poetry known as the Troubadour poetry. It’s a study of the origin, meaning, music and structure of the lyric love poetry which appeared in medieval Spain, in the period from (3rd to 7th centuries A.H / 9th to 13th centuries AD), with special reference to the Muwwashah and the Kharja. It expanded to southern France, then to northern France. The early troubadour was a wondering singer or minstrel who traveled from place to place singing for gaining his living. But the French troubadours were mostly of noble birth that wrote and sang for the upper-class audience. The troubadours wrote their songs and poems of a metrical form mainly on themes of courtly love. Their poetry was influenced by Arabic poetry and it became a literary phenomenon that historians of Western literature and culture could not ignore. This paper highlights the primary role played by the Arabs in medieval poetry issues and it alludes to some salient elements of intercultural communication between the East and the West. INTRODUCTION: Generally speaking, scholars and historians of medieval Arabic literature divided the Arabic and Islamic culture and literature of medieval Spain into three major components. Scholars made divisions of that culture but Gerard Wiegers made the clearest division as follows: I. The influence of the Neoplatonic ideas on the early Islamic culture of spirituality is emphasized, while trying to reveal the common archetypal patterns of the Near Eastern and Mediterranean traditions. Without philosophy it is impossible to be perfectly pious. Stobaei Hermetica 11 B.2 Islamic Falsa/ah in the Light of Hellenic Sophia Plotinus used the termsophia (crocllt<X) simply as a synonym of "philosophy", hence restoring its primordial meaning. But falsafah as the continuation of CIItA.ocrocjlt<X is not just Hellenic philoso­ phy in Islamic guise. In line with Syrian and Mesopotamian translators (be they Sabians, Ori­ ental Christians or Muslims) the Greek sophia (sapientia) has been connected with Arabic root h-k-m. Sometimes sophia is rendered as 'Urn or even falsafah. Nevertheless, hikmah was chosen as the Arabic equivalent to the Greek termphilosophia, as Franz Rosenthal pointed outl . But philosophy for the Arabs meant the adherence to those philosophic doctrines which they learned chiefly from Neoplatonic commentators of Aristotle as well as Stagirit himself and Alexander Aphrodisias. The termgnosis usually is rendered as ma 'rifah, but many Sufis maintained 'Um as their goal instead of ma'rifah. However, when Sufis spoke of the union (ittihad) they meant an ontic union, not only an epistemic one (ittisal).     SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND LITERARY DISSENT IN MIDDLE ENGLISH POETRY Medieval English Poetry is not just a mere literary artifact. An in- creasing interest in the social involvement of literature as a human ac- tivity is gradually shown through poetry which reaches its climax in the fourteenth century when it was also believed to be the literary ex- pression of political dissent and social discontent.1 Thus the poet be- comes aware of the social dimensions of his craft which is also a con- sequence of the social engagement of the poet with the historical situ- ation. He tries to reveal, through the poem, his inner feelings and his critical position against injustice and abuse. The quantity and the quality of the poetical output of this period might well have been a reaction to the radical crisis of the time. Po- etry was intended to have a real effect on society with political impli- cations. It expressed the complaints and shaped the expectations of common people in an age of adversity and controversy. In this way poetry became a radical medium of social propaganda. It was the literary answer to social predominance and political incompetence. Protest and political consciousness conformed to a new understanding of medieval poems, which became weapons in the struggle to reverse contemporary social trends and to encourage the projection of dreams 1.- So we find that “poetry was a means of expressing such social discontent.” Cfr.
