Trends in Historiography Romance and Writing: Interpreting the Lyric Domnas of Occitania by Aubri E. Thurmond “I’ll ask you this: when a lady freely loves a man, should she do as much for him as he for her, according to the rules of courtly love?”1 These words are attributed to Maria de Ventadorn, a woman composing in the lyric tradition of the troubadours. From 1100-1300 A.D., Occitania (Southern France) produced over 400 troubadours whose poetry shaped the concepts of romantic love in the West. Their poems, written in langue d’oc, were expressions of fin’ amor, or courtly love.2 According to Paul Zumthor, “Fin’ amor strives toward a desired but unnamed good, bestowable only by a lady, herself identified only by an emblematic pseudonym: a dialogue without reply, pure song, turning into poetry the movements of a heart contemplating an object whose importance as such is minimal.”3 The troubadour was symbolically dependent on the favor of his lady, therefore seemingly giving her power and humbling himself.4 Fin ‘amor was the source of all courtly values.5 However, there were also women troubadours, called trobairitz, in Southern France. The name trobairitz comes from the root trobar, meaning to compose and the feminine suffix –airitz, literally meaning “a woman who composes.”6 The female troubadours did not refer to themselves as trobairitz. It attempts to answer the question relating to the significance of Islamic legacies for the construction of Spanish history and identity. This research is a historical analysis of historical sources or data regarding the problem related to the place and contribution of al-Andalus’ or Islamic cultural legacies in its various dimensions. Source-materials of this research are particularly written primary and secondary sources. The interpretation of data employs the perspective of continuity and change, and continuity and discontinuity, in addition to Foucault’s power/knowledge relation. This research reveals thatal-Andalus was not merely a geographical entity, but essentially a complex of literary, philosophical and architectural construction. The lagacies of al-Andalus are seen as having a great significance for the reconstruction of Spanish history and the formation of Spanish identity, despite intense debates taking place among different scholar/historians. From Foucauldian perspective, the break between those who advocate and those who challenge the idea of convivencia in social, religious, cultural and literary spheres is to a large extent determined by power/knowledge relation. The Castrian and Albornozan different interpretations of the Spanish history and identity reflect their relations to power and their attitude to contemporary political situation that determine the production of historical knowledge. -

Music and Dance 1 Cultures of the Middle East Midterm paper: Class of Professor Abdelrahim Salih Music and Dance of the Middle East Music transcends language. It can put forth emotions of deep sorrow or ecstatic joy whether the language of the song is in Chinese, English, French or Arabic. With music comes dance. Dance is shaped by the music, as it is the dancer‟s duty to display the emotions of the music; dance is as diverse as the music itself is. Middle Eastern music is a language of its own; it is extraordinarily different from Western music and was shaped by its own great theoreticians of music. The instruments of the Middle East are exotic looking, though they are the ancestors of many Western instruments. The dances of the Middle East vary – there are feminine dances and masculine dances and dances that everyone joins. In the Middle East, music and dance cannot be put under one category because of the extreme variations throughout the region itself. From the beautiful melodies of Debussy to the dramatic compositions of Mozart, there is one thing in common: they are all based on an octave scale that includes thirteen notes. They are based on the Western scale. Vocalists using the Western scale must be very precise when it comes to the notes because there are no “in-between” or quarter notes. Also, compositions are almost always polyphonic; they have both a melody and a harmony (Todd, 2003). A piece that does not include a harmony is considered to be rather simple and not a great classical. -

A scholar is a person who studies a subject and knows a lot about it. Calligraphy is the art of producing beautiful handwriting using a brush or a special pen. Astronomy is the scientific study of the stars, planets, and other natural objects in space. Thinking Task: This map shows the areas of the world conquered by the Early Islamic civilization. SOCIAL CONSCIOUSNESS AND LITERARY DISSENT IN MIDDLE ENGLISH POETRY Medieval English Poetry is not just a mere literary artifact. An in- creasing interest in the social involvement of literature as a human ac- tivity is gradually shown through poetry which reaches its climax in the fourteenth century when it was also believed to be the literary ex- pression of political dissent and social discontent.1 Thus the poet be- comes aware of the social dimensions of his craft which is also a con- sequence of the social engagement of the poet with the historical situ- ation. He tries to reveal, through the poem, his inner feelings and his critical position against injustice and abuse. The quantity and the quality of the poetical output of this period might well have been a reaction to the radical crisis of the time. Po- etry was intended to have a real effect on society with political impli- cations. It expressed the complaints and shaped the expectations of common people in an age of adversity and controversy. In this way poetry became a radical medium of social propaganda. It was the literary answer to social predominance and political incompetence. Protest and political consciousness conformed to a new understanding of medieval poems, which became weapons in the struggle to reverse contemporary social trends and to encourage the projection of dreams 1.- So we find that “poetry was a means of expressing such social discontent.” Cfr. A rich manuscript tradition has facilitated numerous studies ofAquitanian sacred music, but to date most previous research has focused on one particular facet of the repertoire, often in isolation from its cultural context. This study seeks to view Aquitanian musical culture through several intersecting sacred and secular concerns and to relate the various musical traditions to the region's broader societal forces.
