They were not placed Fri: Phil 1:1-11 / Ps 111:1-2, 3-4, 5-6 / there by St. Michael's, nor can we remove them. St. Michael's Lk 14:1-6 will never put out any political signs. Please note that any Sat: Phil 1:18B-26 / Ps 42:2, 3, 5CDEF / signs in front of the church do not imply any endorsement Lk 14:1, 7-11 of political candidates by St. Michael's. Next Sun: Rv 7:2-4, 9-14 / Ps 24:1BC-2, 3-4AB, 5-6 / 1 Jn 3:1-3 / Mt 5:1-12A 3 FATHER'S Faith Notes With the election fast approaching, I’d like to pick back up on the theme of our political involvement but from the perspective of prayer rather than voting. In his 1st Letter to Timothy, St. Paul gives this instruction, “First of all, then, I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity. This is good and pleasing to God our savior, who wills everyone to be saved and to come to knowledge of the truth.” Remember that, at this time, those in authority were often truly wicked men. Think of King Herod, who took his brother’s wife and then killed John the Baptist over it, or the Roman Emperors who would ultimately exe- cute St. Paul. These were no friends to Christianity or good morals, and yet, St. Paul commanded his contem- poraries to pray for them. He did so recognizing that their task of ordering society and keeping the peace was indispensable for Christians to lead devout, peaceful lives and that God desires their salvation too. His prayer is in no way an endorsement of their leadership but is born of the hope that God will guide them to exercise their authority for the common good. Now, that is easy enough if you like the person in leadership, but what if you don’t? What if you feel they stand against everything you believe in? Then pray for them all the more! Remember, Jesus himself com- mands us “love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). It is clear then, that whether a leader is on “our side” or not, our Christian duty is to pray for them and to love them. So, vote with a well-formed conscience, yes, and pray with one as well. These women and men in public life are people too. God desires that, through our prayers for them, they also may be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. God bless you, Fr.
