One of the points of difference between the bearings of the Royal and Parliamentary Burghs on the one hand and those of the I Police Burghs on the other lies in the fact that the former carry castles and ships to an extent which becomes almost monotonous, while among the latter these bearings are rare. On the other hand, the Police Burghs very frequently assume a charge of which A 079 2 Aberchirder. examples, in the blazonry of the Royal and Parliamentary Burghs, are very rare : this is the cross, derived apparently from the fact that their market-crosses are the most prominent of their ancient monuments. In cases where the cross calvary does not appear, a cross of some other kind is often found, as in the present instance.

Madrid - Diciembre 201 INTRODUCTION Tears and compunction and the First Week of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola Within the context of the classic, month-long Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, the exercises of the First Week constitute a certain sine qua non of fully and deeply experiencing the whole of the Spiritual Exercises. The exercises of the First Week, through the Principal and Foundation, the examinations of conscience (both the particular and general), the invitation to the sacrament of confession and frequent communion, lay down the basic ground work for the conversion experience. They instill in the exercitant1 the important disposition and attitude for continual conversion – a disposition that incisively opens the exercitant up to all the subsequent exercises in an unparalleled way. As such, it is crucial that the exercitant be carefully and completely exposed to all of the dynamics of the meditations of the exercises found within the First Week. Clearly, the central part of the structure of the exercises contained within the First Week hinges upon the meditations on sin and all of its implications and repercussions: from the vile reality of sin and personal sin to the real possibility of damnation and the great gift of salvation wrought by Christ.

Edward Quinnan, SJ, Assistant for Pastoral Ministries, and Nicholas Napolitano, Assistant for Social Ministries, Maryland and USA Northeast Jesuit Provinces Introduction In response to Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical, Laudato Si’: On the Care of Our Common Home, many parishes have actively discerned ways to respond to climate change and engaged in a variety of climate justice activities in their communities. The Maryland and USA Northeast Provinces invited Jesuit parishes to share their activities, actions, and resources in order to inform and inspire others. In partnership with Honoring the Future®, a nonprofit project which harnesses the power of art to educate, empower, and engage the public on climate change, the Provinces then compiled the parishes’ responses in this report. This report organizes parish responses into five main categories: Pastoral Initiatives, Education Programs, Arts Initiatives, Activities and Collaborations. This report also provides recommended resources from national Catholic and nonprofit organizations. We hope to inspire all parishes to respond to Laudato Si’ in their own unique way, offering these tangible eXamples and eXtensive resources as a starting point.

IGNATIAN LAITY: DISCIPLESHIP, IN COMMUNITY, FOR MISSION1 Samuel Yáñez Professor of Philosophy, Universidad Alberto Hurtado Member of CLC Santiago, Chile he Second Vatican Council dealt with the Church primarily from the perspective of what unites all T Christians. From this common point of view, it addressed the specifics of each vocation (lay, religious, priestly.) Inspired by the Council, the Church strives, in its comings and goings, in the task of giving birth historically to a Church that is the People of God, which is the theological category used by the Council. This also has been seen in what can be called the “Ignatian world,” that is, in the realm, not closed but rather open, of those who live out Christianity along the spiritual path opened by St. Ignatius of Loyola. One expression of this fact is that, in the last two General Congregations of the Society of Jesus, the theme of collaboration has given rise to two Decrees: Decree 13 of GC 34 and Decree 6 of GC 35. In Chile, collaboration is already producing fruit through service, for example, in education, in the renewal of the experience of the Spiritual Exercises, in social promotion, in the evangelization of culture, in the service of those in any need. In this context, I propose to try to respond to two questions. The first is: How ought we to think about the theme of collaboration between Jesuits – religious and or priests – NUMBER 125 - Review of Ignatian Spirituality 87 DISCIPLESHIP, IN COMMUNITY, FOR MISSION and laypeople? The second question is: What would be the essential elements that a lay Ignatian would have to possess to be considered as such? In order to avoid having to repeat each time “lay men and women” I will speak of “laypersons” or sometimes “laymen.” But I always mean to be speaking of both women and men.

Macinnes University of Strathclyde [email protected] Abstract The trial and execution of the Jesuit John Ogilvie in 1615 is located within diverse political contexts—Reformation and Counter-Reformation; British state formation; and the contested control of the Scottish Kirk between episcopacy and Presbyterian- ism. The endeavors of James vi and i to promote his ius imperium by land and sea did not convert the union of the crowns into a parliamentary union. However, he pressed ahead with British policies to civilize frontiers, colonize overseas and engage in war and diplomacy. Integral to his desire not to be beholden to any foreign power was his promotion of religious uniformity which resulted in a Presbyterian backlash against episcopacy. At the same time, the Scottish bishops sought to present a united Protes- tant front by implementing penal laws against Roman Catholic priests and laity, which led to Ogilvie being charged with treason for upholding the spiritual supremacy of the papacy over King James. Ogilvie’s martyrdom may stand in isolation, but it served to reinvigorate the Catholic mission to Scotland. Filled from my youth with the deepest veneration for Father Isaac Jogues, whose amiable character and heroic death attracted even those who could not appreciate fully his virtues as a Christian and a priest, I had read in manuscript the life written by Father Felix Martin, my guide and constant encourager in my historic studies. To its publication I earnestly looked forward, hoping to be able to translate it into English. In the long delay I contributed what I could to make the illustrious mission- ary known.
