Re: Peace Northern Caribou Plan

I would like to inform you of the provincial government’s intention to develop a Peace Northern Caribou Plan (PNCP). Over the spring and summer of 2012 the Province will develop a comprehensive plan that addresses the requirements of seven herds of the northern ecotype of Woodland Caribou; specifically the Graham, Moberly, Burnt Pine, Kennedy Siding, Scott (east portion) Quintette and Narroway herds. The development of this plan will fulfill a commitment made in the Burnt Pine Caribou Augmentation Plan to “initiate a broader planning process applicable to all seven herds”.

The geographic scope of the PNCP will encompass the ranges utilized by the seven herds described above (see attached map). The plan will describe an array of activities that will conserve these herds by addressing their habitat needs, including mitigating the effects of industrial activities, and population threats (e.g., predation).

In addition to government-to-government consultations with First Nations, the Province is also engaging with stakeholders, including representatives of the oil and gas, coal and minerals, forestry and wind power sectors, for the purpose of informing development of the PNCP. If local governments such as yours are interested in engaging in the planning process, including having a meeting to discuss that topic, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

Matt Austin Project Director – Peace Northern Caribou Plan Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations Mobile: (250) 360-6317 [email protected]
