Pre-schoolers who learn to read and write may end up turned off books for life, according to Lilian Katz, Professor of Education at the University of Illinois. Addressing a conference on foundation-stage learning at the University of Oxford, Professor Katz said the Government's plans to get all children to start reading earlier could undermine their academic performance in later years. Currently, many British children learn to read in reception class, compared to their Scandinavian counterparts, who commence formal learning at aged seven. While children who learn to read at four score higher in tests at the age of five, they go on to perform lower during junior school education.

  • The Case of Peaches Geldof. Diane Charl
Performing celebrity motherhood on Twitter: Courting homage and [momentary] disaster – the case of Peaches Geldof. Diane Charlesworth: University of Lincoln, UK. Email: [email protected] @peaches-g ‘Just how far the cult of celebrity and super fandom has come when grown women are passing their own kids round. I hate the world sometimes’. The above was part of a Twitter message that Peaches Geldof published in November 2013. In it she also named the two women who had allowed the Lost Prophets’ singer Ian Watkins to abuse their babies. What became key elements focused upon by journalists in the newspaper debate that followed, her subsequent deletion of the message and apology, was the purpose of Twitter as a form of communication, and the celebritisation of public discourse. This tweet was constructed as an empty-headed, gossipy, childish and hence feminised intervention into the public sphere.i Also tied up with this debate was the on-going narrative of the ‘non-functionality’ of celebrity culture and its ‘reflexive exhibitionism’ (Hyde 2013). Yet Geldof had, until this point, used a combination of Twitter and Instagram to enact a self- transformation from girlhood to motherhood that had drawn critical affirmation from both media pundits and female followers via the social media sites. It is this image of motherhood that has informed the reporting of her sudden death of a heroin overdose at the age of 25 on 7 April 2014. Geldof’s intervention and comment on the failure of mothers to protect their children in the above cited tweet, should be analysed in the context of her own very serious performance of that identity.

But before we get to who this man was and why even in 2014 his name still has influence, let us tell you a little bit about just where this guy stood morally. He was quoted as saying “I simply went over to Satan's side and I do not know why.” Crowley also said “I was not content to just believe in Satan, I wanted to be his chief of staff.” During the early 1900s One of Crowley's creations was a secret sect known as Ordo Templi Orienti (OTO), which was originally set up to teach sex magic (called magick by Crowley).

  • The Documentary Handbook
The Documentary Handbook The Documentary Handbook takes a thematic approach to documentary, including chapters on the many myriad forms we watch today – from the cinematic releases of Michael Moore to low-budget internet efforts like Video Nation, from ‘shock docs’ to reality television. The Documentary Handbook is a critical introduction to the documentary film, its theory and changing practices. The book charts the evolution of the documentary from screen art to core television genre, its metamorphosis into many different types of factual TV programmes and its current emergence in forms of new media. It analyses those pathways and the transformation of means of production through economic, technical and editorial changes. The Documentary Handbook explains the documentary process, skills and job specifica- tions for everyone from industry entrants to senior personnel, and shows how the industrial evolution of television has relocated the powers and principles of decision-making. Through the use of professional ‘expert briefings’ it gives practical pointers about programme- making, from researching, developing and pitching programme ideas to their production and delivery through a fast-evolving multi-platform universe. Peter Lee-Wright is a documentary filmmaker with 30 years’ experience working for the BBC and Channel 4. He is currently Senior Lecturer in Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London. His most recent writing includes critical overviews of sports documentary and trade union documentary in Encyclopedia of the Documentary Film (2005) and analysis of the changes taking place in multimedia news, notably in New Media, Old News (edited by Natalie Fenton, 2009). Media Practice Edited by James Curran, Goldsmiths, University of London The Media Practice handbooks are comprehensive resource books for students of media and journalism, and for anyone planning a career as a media professional.

  • Gonzo Weekly
2 Psychedelic Warlords – both started important tours, and sent me a whole wallage of photographs. So I asked Craig High, the lead singer of The Psychedelic Warlords, and no stranger to these hallowed pages, to write his impressions of the show. I also asked Andy Thommen for the same thing, but he suggested that, as these were the first Clepsydra gigs for a very long time, it would be more appropriate that I asked some of the loyal Clepsydra fans. He gave some email addresses and I asked away. I have always believed that a magazine should be a two-way process; that the flow of information - unlike entropy - goes both ways. Furthermore, I have always thought that one of the things that is most amiss with conventional reviews sections in magazines is that they give a sterile impression of Dear Friends, the event that they are meant to be describing. I think, totally by accident, that this issue has Welcome to another issue of Gonzo Weekly. managed to overcome that. The descriptions of a concert given in one case by the lead singer, and in You will notice an underlying theme in this issue – the other case by committed fans who have waited live music. Because Gonzo Multimedia is a record over a decade for their favourite band to reform, has company, the main crux of this magazine is (and produced results that are anything but sterile. probably always will be) about recorded music. But it so happens that this week two of my favourite I am grateful, and ever so slightly humbled, to be in contemporary bands – Clepsydra and The the position that I am with this magazine.

  • Anthology of Nonfiction Texts
Anthology of non-fiction Transactional writing 1 *The following “glossary” is taken from The Pearson Edexcel AS and A level English Language and Literature Voices Anthology Article News stories and feature articles are the staple forms of journalism. An article is a particular section or item in either a printed or broadcast text that forms an independent part of a publication or programme. News stories are immediate and focus on a subject of current interest. Their aim is to be informative and economical as they have limited space. Feature articles discuss an on-going issue and present the views of the writer. They are longer and more detailed than news stories and often include visuals. This category is broad and may include written articles drawn from newspapers, magazines, websites or other printed publications or articles taken from the broadcast media. Autobiography/Biography An autobiography is a written account of the life of a person, written by that person. Autobiographies are subjective by nature – seeing and filtering events through the perspective of the writer. They tend to have a confessional tone and can include reminiscences and anecdotes. The writer is usually aware of the implied audience as he/she is writing with the intention of publication. Celebrity autobiographies are often ‘ghost’ written, i.e. written by a professional writer who interviews the subject. An autobiographer tries to establish a rapport with the reader on a personal level. A biography is an account of a person’s life written by a professional writer. The subject is usually a famous historical or present-day public figure.
