Claudio Ranieri takes his FC Internazionale Milano side to France seeking a third successive UEFA Champions League quarter-final place – as well as a small piece of revenge over Olympique de Marseille coach . • As coach of AS Monaco FC, Deschamps denied Ranieri's Chelsea FC a place in the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League final with a 5-3 aggregate success. Previous meetings • The clubs met for the first time in the 2003/04 UEFA Cup when José Anigo's OM recorded 1-0 home and away wins in the quarter-finals en route to reaching the final. Didier Drogba hit the only goal in Marseille and Camel Meriem's strike settled the second leg. Javier Zanetti appeared in both games for an Inter side coached by Alberto Zaccheroni. Match background • Home advantage may not hold its usual significance in this tie given both teams' records at their own grounds this season. It is a curious coincidence that each lost two of their group stage matches on home turf, taking just three points at home but seven on their travels. • Winners in 2010 and quarter-finalists last term, Inter are competing in the UEFA Champions League's last 16 for the eighth season running. For OM, this is their second consecutive campaign after an 11-year gap; they have not been beyond the last 16 since lifting the trophy in 1993. • Group B winners Inter have already won on French soil this term, beating LOSC Lille Métropole 1-0 in October – the first of back-to-back victories against the Ligue 1 club. Their overall record in France is W5 D3 L3. • Marseille lost their most recent home game against Italian visitors, 2-1 against AC Milan in the 2009/10 group stage. Their overall record against sides at the Stade Vélodrome is W4 D1 L2. • Marseille beat Milan 1-0 in the 1993 UEFA Champions League final but lost 3-0 against Parma FC in the 1999 UEFA Cup final. Team ties • Deschamps was in Marseille's 1993 UEFA Champions League final team and also featured in the France side that defeated Italy in the 1998 FIFA World Cup quarter-finals and the UEFA EURO 2000 final. • Deschamps spent five seasons with Juventus as a player between 1994 and 1999, winning three league titles, one Italian Cup and the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League. He was unbeaten in eight Serie A outings against Inter, winning five of them. The only defeat he suffered in ten matches overall against the Nerazzurri was in the 1996/97 quarter-finals. • As Juventus coach Deschamps led the club to the 2006/07 title before making way for Ranieri. • In two-legged European ties against Italian opponents as a player, Deschamps lost out against Torino FC with FC Nantes in the 1986/87 UEFA Cup first round and against AS Roma with FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the 1990/91 UEFA Cup third round. He also appeared in the first leg of Juventus' defeat by Parma FC in the 1994/95 UEFA Cup final. • Ranieri had not beaten French opposition in UEFA competition before this season. He had previously lost two-legged ties against Paris Saint-Germain FC with SSC Napoli in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup second round and against Monaco with Chelsea in 2003/04. • Maicon played under Deschamps in 2004/05, the first season of his two-year stint at Monaco. • Djimi Traoré was in the Liverpool FC team that beat Milan in the 2005 final having overcome Juventus in the quarter-finals. • André and Jordan Ayew's father Abédi Pelé played in Italy for Torino. • Dejan Stanković captained the Serbia side defeated 1-0 by André Ayew's Ghana at the 2010 World Cup. Prior to the tournament he scored in a 4-3 friendly win against Stéphane Mbia and Nicolas N'Koulou's Cameroon. • Elinton Andrade was third-choice goalkeeper at CR Flamengo in 2003 when Júlio César was No1. Andrade was briefly on Ascoli Calcio's books but did not play.

UEFA Champions League knockout stage: Did you know? • Teams have recovered from a first-leg deficit to go through on 24 occasions although only twice – AFC Ajax's defeat of Panathinaikos FC in the 1995/96 semi-finals and FC Internazionale Milano's win against FC Bayern München in the 2010/11 round of 16 – has a side progressed after a home first-leg loss. The biggest losing margin a side has overturned was achieved by RC Deportivo La Coruña in the 2003/04 quarter-finals when they lost 4-1 at AC Milan but won 4-0 at home. • Twenty ties have been decided on the away goals rule, including six where the triumphant team lost the first leg. • FC Bayern München hold the record for the biggest first-leg lead with a 5-0 success at Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2008/09 first knockout round, eventually going through 12-1 after a 7-1 home victory in the second leg. Those two games also featured more goals (13) over its two legs than any previous UEFA Champions League knockout tie. • Ten ties have gone to penalties, including the game between Arsenal FC and AS Roma in the 2008/09 round of 16. Five of these were finals – 1996, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2008. The first two-legged tie decided on spot-kicks was PSV Eindhoven's 4-2 win against Olympique Lyonnais on 13 April 2005 after a 2-2 aggregate draw. • In all, 17 ties have required extra time. So far seven have been decided by extra time alone: four quarter-finals, two first knockout round encounters and the 2007/08 semi-final between Chelsea FC and Liverpool FC. • There has never been a knockout tie ending goalless after two legs. Ten have finished 1-0 on aggregate, most recently Tottenham Hotspur FC's narrow victory against AC Milan in the 2010/11 round of 16. • is the only player to win the European Cup with three clubs (AFC Ajax 1995, Real Madrid CF 1998, AC Milan 2003, 2007). Liverpool's Bob Paisley (1977, 1978, 1981) is the only coach to win three times. • Ottmar Hitzfeld (Borussia Dortmund 1997, Bayern 2001), Ernst Happel (Feyenoord 1970, Hamburger SV 1983) and José Mourinho (FC Porto 2004, FC Internazionale Milano 2010) are the only coaches to win the trophy with two clubs. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Champion Clubs' Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the final as holders only to lose. • Only two teams have ever won the UEFA Champions League on home soil: Borussia Dortmund (1997, final in Munich) and Juventus (1996, final in Rome), while Manchester United FC lost the 2011 final in London. Five teams won Champion Clubs' Cup finals on home soil: Real Madrid CF (1957), FC Internazionale Milano (1965), Manchester United FC (1968), AFC Ajax (1972) and Liverpool FC (1978), while Stade de Reims Champagne (1956), AS Roma (1984) and FC Barcelona (1986) all lost finals in their own country. UEFA Champions League: Did you know? • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta is the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League having been aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on Matchday 6 of the 2007/08 edition. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 148 days, in Manchester United's 2-0 win at FC Schalke 04 on 26 April 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was sent off in the 37th minute.
