The Community Industry: an Analysis of Reddit and /R/Socialism
THE COMMUNITY INDUSTRY: AN ANALYSIS OF REDDIT AND /R/SOCIALISM Richard Babb A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2021 Committee: Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Samuel T McAbee, Graduate Faculty Representative Lara Lengel Yanqin Lu © 2021 Richard Babb All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Radhika Gajjala, Advisor Social media is an increasingly important space for community formation and interactions. Coinciding with the rise of social media has been an increasing interest in leftist ideologies once outside the mainstream. This analysis seeks to understand the social media site Reddit.com’s enabling and constraining features on the community /r/socialism. Using the communicative theory of identity and Marxist media theory not only to look at Reddit and /r/socialism’s relationship, but five key functions of a media: capital-economic, media sales and media market function, commodity circulation, domination, and the audience. Employing a mixed-methods approach enabled various data to be analyzed and relationally understood. Qualitative content analysis was used to examine user’s salient topics and their uses for the community. Survey methods were deployed to the community to gather demographic data on the /r/socialism community and user opinions on the group’s relationship with Reddit. Finally, secondary documents were analyzed to provide greater context to the other findings. Findings from the content analysis of salient subjects showed a preference for contemporary capitalist critique, socialist quotations, and class issues. However, topics impacting women and other minority groups were light to nonexistent. -

That her mama is going to be hospitalized for months like she was last time. With her daddy struggling to save the farm and her mama in denial about what's happening, it's up to Della to heal her mama for good. And she knows just how she'll do it: with a jar of the Bee Lady's magic honey, which has mended the wounds and woes of Maryville, North Carolina, for generations. Policy Brief Policy Brief May 2018, PB-18/12
OCP Policy Center Policy Brief Policy Brief May 2018, PB-18/12 Thinking about the symbiotic relationship between the Media and Terrorism By Mohammed Elshimi Summary In terms of counter-terrorism, mass media coverage of terrorist acts created a situation where a symbiotic relationship is established between the media and terrorism. To elaborate, both of these parties rely on each other to further strengthen their presence, which is disadvantageous towards counter-terrorism efforts, but simultaneously beneficial for both terrorist and media organizations. The media has become a platform for terrorist communication in some respects, while unintentionally being the influence for copycat terrorism, as seen with the increase in lone actor terrorist acts in recent times. The nature of this relationship is often underplayed and understated by policy-makers and this brief attempts to instigate a re-evaluation of counter-media approaches to terrorism. Since 2001, considerable political, financial and emotional Extremism (PVE) and called on member states to develop investment has been expended in tackling terrorism in national and regional PVE action plans. These provisions many countries at many levels- international, regional, have been accompanied by legal mechanisms designed national and local. National Security strategies are to prohibit incitement to terrorism, criminalising the increasingly dominated by preventive approaches to financing of terrorism and prosecuting Foreign Terrorist terrorism, widely characterised as ‘Countering Violent Fighters.2 Extremism’ (CVE). The premise of CVE is that terrorists are made and not born, but that human behaviour can However, the role of ‘old media’ in countering terrorism- be changed by increasing ‘resilience’ and decreasing print media, film, radio and television- has not been ‘vulnerabilities’ amongst targeted populations. -

After the fall, the early history of man as recorded in the Bible further demonstrates Him refraining to use sickness. However, once the law was instituted God began to use sickness as a punishment. In the Old Testament, sickness was always defined as a curse and never a blessing. It was used by God to curse people for disobeying the law. In the New Testament, God was seen healing the multitudes instead of cursing them. Through the atonement of Jesus, believers have been redeemed from the curse of the law (Galatians 3:13). Healing has been provided with the forgiveness of sins. There are numerous reasons why people still are not healed but it is not God’s Will for them to remain ill. Running head: ILLNESS AND GOD’S WILL 4 Illness and God’s Will In the world today there are a variety of loosely held ideas regarding sicknesses of all kinds and their relationship to God. -
