It is with great pleasure that on behalf of the organizers of this first Regional Groundnut Workshop Iwelcome you to Lilongwe. We are honored today by the presence as Chief Guest of the Malawi Minister of Forestry and Natural Re­ sources, the Honorable S. Demba who has very kindy found time from his busy schedule to attend our meeting and present the opening address on behalf of the Life President His Excellency Ngwazi Dr. H.Kamuzu Banda. I now request the Honorable Minister to open the proceedings. 3 Opening Address on Behalf of the Minister of Agriculture The Hon. S. Demba* District Chairman of the Malawi Congress Party, Your Excellencies, Your Worship the Mayor of the City of Lilongwe, Distinguished Participants, Ladies and Gentlemen. On behalf of His Excellency the Life President, Ngwazi Dr. H. Kamuzu Banda, the Government and the people of Malawi, and on my own behalf, Iwish to extend avery warm and hearty welcome to all our distinguished participants to the ICRISAT Regional Workshop on Groundnut Research and Improvement in Southern Africa. Please feel free to visit any part of the country and Ihope that you will be able to enjoy your stay with us, and that you will have an opportunity to see something of the surrounding countryside to enable you to appreciate the efforts that Malawi ismaking in the field of agriculture in general, and groundnut production in particular. I feel very honored to open this important workshop on behalf of His Excellency the Life President, Ngwazi Dr. H.Kamuzu Banda. In 1980 His Excellency th, Life Presi­ dent directed that the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Trop­ ics (ICRISAT) could establish a Regional Groundnut Research Center for Southern Africa, at Chitedze Research Station in Lilongwe. While the memorandum of under­ standing between the Malawi Government and ICRISAT was signed in 1981, the Center became operational with the financial assistanc'e of the International Devel­ opment Research Center (IDRC) and the posting of the groundnut breeder and pathologist in 1982 and 1983, respectively. The Center is developing a regional research program aimed at benefiting a:l the groundnut-growing areas of Southern and Eastern Africa. The Center, in collabora­ tion with national research programs, will initiate trials to produce groundnuts with multiple disease resistance, earliness, high yield, good food quality, and increased seed size. Groundnuts have been known to man as an important food crop for many centur­ ies. However, they acquired economic importance only 130 years ago and even as late as 60 years ago in the developed and developing countries, respectively. Pres­ ently, because of an increased awareness of the protein shortage existing in the world, the use of groundnuts as a food and cash crop has increased substantially. Much of this increase is attributed to the high content of digestible protein (25-34%) and oil (44-56%), amino acids including cystine, and the vitamins thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin. Groundnut is a multipurpose crop. The seeds are consumed in many forms (unshelled, shelled, roasted, peanut butter, candies, and confectionary), and in Africa groundnut flour is used in a large number of dishes. Groundnut oil is an excellent cooking oil because of its linoleic acid content. Groundnut cake, the by-product of oil extraction, is an excellent livestock feed because of its high protein content. The groundnut shells, besides being a source of afuel are used indrilling-mud, as organic fertilizer, and in particle board. Minister of Forestry and Natural Resources, Malawi. 4 Groundnuts are of great importance in smallholder agriculture and in the national diet of Malawi. They provide a significant contribution towards dietary requirements in most parts of the country, they benefit farming systems through improving and structure, soil fertility and they provide between a quarter and a third of all small-holder agricultural cash income. Groundnuts are Malawi's fourth most important export after tobacco, crop sugar, and tea, and supply about half of the country's demand for edible oil. Groundnuts are grown in all three regions of Malawi, the major share being contributed by the Central Region Plateau. Chalimbana and Mani Pintar are the major confectionary and oil cultivars respectively. Malimba and RG1 are grown in specific areas of the country. Through the National Research Program at Chitedze one large seeded confectionery cultivar (larger than Chalimbana), Chitembana, and one oil cultivar, Mawanga, have recently been released for commercial production. Malawi groundnut production has undergone a marked decline since the late 1960s. Marketed output grew rapidly during the 1950s and 1960s from a negligible level to some 33 000 metric tonnes a year, but has tended to fall off since the late 1970's. The seedling morphological features explored include germination pattern, seed shape, surface and hilum, root system, cotyledon type, cotyledonary hyperphyll (apocole), cotyledonary hypophyll (cotyledonary sheath), hypocotyl, first leaf and subsequent leaves. All taxa studied had hypogeal and remote tubular cotyledons. However, differences in cotyledon structure (apocole, cotyledonary sheath), seed, hypocotyl, internodes, first leaf and subsequent leaves were observed. Variations of those characters were used to prepare an identification key for the investigated taxa. Commelina spp. and Murdannia nudiflora of the tribe Commelineae were found to differ from Cyanotis spp. and Tradescantia spathacea of tribe Tradescantieae in the petiolate first leaf with papillate margins on upper surface with 6- celled stomata and the glabrous epicotyl.

(A~pted 05 July, 2001) ABSTRACT Epidemiology of groundnut rosette virus (GRV) was investigated over a three - year period at Samaru, Northern Guinea Savanna of Nigeria. Significant positive correlations were obtained for the following: incidence of GRV andnumber of alate aphids trapped; temperature and age of plants; temperature and number of alate aphids trapped; relative humidity and incidence of GRV. Conversely, a significant negative correlation was obtained between age of plants and' number of alate aphids trapped; relative humidity and number of alate aphids trapped; and relative humidity and sunshine hours. Seventy percent of the aphids trapped were A. craccivora, while the proportion of A. jabae, A. gossypii and M. persicae were 15, 9 and 6%, respectively. The susceptible groundnut genotype, 48-1158, had the highest incidence of aphids and GRV disease, followed in descending order by the moderately resistant RRB and the resistant RMP91 genotypes. INTRODUCTION Groundnut rosette virus (GRV) is the most important factor limiting the production ofgroundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Africa especially in Nigeria (Brunt and Bonney, 1964; Rossel, 1977; Alegbejo, 1997). It is transmitted persistently by Aphis craccivora Koch (Rossel, 1997; Misari et al., 1988), My'lJJS persicae Sulzer and Aphis gossypii Glover (Todd et al., 1993; Alegbejo, 2000a). An epidemic of the disease occurred in Nigeria in 1975 and destroyed an estimated 0.7 million hectares of groundnut (Yayock et al., 1976).

PROSTKO2 Abstract: Tropical spiderwort (more appropriately called Benghal day¯ower) poses a serious threat to crop production in the southern United States. Although tropical spiderwort has been present in the United States for more than seven decades, only recently has it become a pest in agricultural ®elds. Identi®ed as an isolated weed problem in 1999, tropical spiderwort became the most trou- blesome weed in Georgia cotton by 2003. Contributing to the signi®cance of tropical spiderwort as a troublesome weed is the lack of control afforded by most commonly used herbicides, especially glyphosate. Vegetative growth and ¯ower production of tropical spiderwort were optimized between 30 and 35 C, but growth was sustained over a range of 20 to 40 C. These temperatures are common throughout much of the United States during summer months. At the very least, it appears that tropical spiderwort may be able to co-occur with cotton throughout the southeastern United States. The environmental limits of tropical spiderwort have not yet been determined. However, the rapid spread through Georgia and naturalization in North Carolina, coupled with its tolerance to current management strategies and aggressive growth habit, make tropical spiderwort a signi®cant threat to agroecosystems in the southern United States. The research supported seeks environmentally sound, sustainable agriculture production and food delivery systems for peanut. The program has five thrusts addressing priority constraints to the global peanut industry (aflatoxin, production efficiency, socio-economic forces, post-harvest processing, and utilization). Peanut CRSP also works to foster human resource development and the communication of research results. The Peanut CRSP provides support for collaborative research, training, and exchange of information through grants to 10 universities in the USA linked to 14 host countries in the developing world. Both host countries and the USA are expected to benefit from the activities of Peanut CRSP. Peanut CRSP actively collaborates with other organizations with interest in advancing development through the application of science and technology.
