De i Branschöversikten publicerade tabellerna redovisar uppgifter från företagens bokslut för 2003 och 2003/2004. 2 Svensk Teknik och Design, nov 2004 Innehåll 4 FÖRBÄTTRAD KONJUNKTUR I SVERIGE 4Orolig omvärld Men tillväxten har tagit fart och 2004 kanske utgör toppen på konjunkturuppgången. Bantningen i branschen har gett resultat och företagen står väl rustade att möta de närmaste åren. 6 Vändpunkt 2006? Huruvida 2006 blir avslutning av pågående konjunkturförbättring är svårt att bedöma. Uppgången är svagare än den förra och marknadsförväntningarna bör hållas något dämpade. 7 Rekordlåg lönsamhet på väg upp Vinstmarginalen för branschen totalt under 2003 var den sämsta (nästan) på 20 år. Industrikonsultföretagen med negativ lönsamhet har vägt ned nyckeltalen. Men nu kommer resultatförbättringarna på bred front. 7 Lönekostnadsutvecklingen på väg mot realism Lönekostnadsutvecklingen håller sakta på att anpassas till företagens möjlighet att utvecklas. För år 2003 ökade branschens lönekostnader per anställd med ca 3,4 % jämfört med förödande 4,7 % året innan. Utvecklingen är nu mer kontrollerad och bedömningen är att branschens samlade lönekostnad per anställd ökar med ca 2,7 % under 2004. 7 Lågkonjunkturen kvinnofälla Kvinnoandelen i branschen minskade ytterligare under 2003 till ca 23 %. Men antalet kvinnliga vd:ar ökade något liksom kvinnornas andel i branschföretagens styrelser. 8 Bygg- och industriinvesteringarna 8Produktion rinner ur landet Industrin satsar allt mer på marknaderna utanför Sverige. Våra prestationer utsätts för hård konkurrens. En global pricerunner-effekt, hänger samman med den allt stridare produktions- och tjänsteförflyttningen österut. 10 De största strukturaffärerna och andra företagshändelser Vid sidan av den tvärnordiska konsolideringen riktas blickarna österut. De flesta strukturaffärerna under 2004 har gjorts på det internationella planet. 11 Nyckeltal för de största svenska konsultföretagen 14 De största grupperna inom industriteknik, projektledning och installation/energi och arkitektverksamhet 15 Börsnoterade konsultföretag i västvärlden – en jämförelse 17 De 300 största koncernerna i Sverige – tabeller 23 DEN NORDISKA MARKNADEN 23 Ekonomiska förutsättningar och företagsaffärer 24 Nordens 100 största arkitektföretag 27 De 100 största koncernerna i Danmark, Finland och Norge – tabeller och nyckeltal 33 INTERNATIONELL UTVECKLING 33 Turbulent återhämtning. Tryckindustri Information, Solna 2004 Svensk Teknik och Design, nov 2004 3 Förord Vår bransch skapar värden som varar. Arkitekt-, teknikkonsult- och industrikonsult- branschen utreder, projekterar och deltar på den svenska marknaden i utvecklingen av fasta investeringar och produkter för över 200 miljarder kronor årligen. Branschen påverkar därmed utvecklingen av ca 8 % av landets BNP. Vår bransch har direkt påver- kan på planering, funktion, ekonomi, teknik och estetik för över 90 % av de fysiska investeringarna som görs i det svenska samhällsbyggandet. Vår bransch spelar en allt viktigare och mer omfattande roll för industrins utveckling. Inte bara genom avance- rad produktutveckling samt planering och projektering för investeringar i process- och produktionsapparaten utan också som en viktig part i industrins forsknings- och utveck- lingsarbete. Internationaliseringen blir allt tydligare. Åtskilliga företag har Norden som marknad eller har åtminstone verksamhet i ytterligare ett nordiskt land utanför hemmamarknaden. Allt fler utländska aktörer är verksamma i Sverige. De ökande investeringarna i EU:s nya medlemsländer gör att blicken nu också riktas österut. Internationaliseringen leder vidare till att antalet företagssammanslagningar och företagsuppköp stadigt ökar tvärs gränserna. Också antalet rena samarbeten med tekniköverföring och stundom resursförstärkning över gränserna ökar. På hemmaplan fortsätter branschens konsolidering. Inom bygg- sektorn pågår en bred diskussion om hur vi skall åstadkomma mer effektiva och kvalitets- höjande arbetsformer. En rationell och kostnadseffektiv konsultbransch är en förut- sättning för att lyckas. Syftet med föreliggande Branschöversikt är att öka kunskapen om vår bransch med arkitektföretag, teknikkonsult- och industrikonsultföretag. Med vår svenska, nordiska och internationella kartläggning hoppas vi kunna ge en bild av branschen och dess företag och om trender och affärer. Vår gemensamma bransch- och arbetsgivarorganisation Svensk Teknik och Design inom Almega har som ett mål att öka branschens synlighet. Marknadsinformation av den karaktär Ni nu håller i handen är en del av organisationens utåtriktade verksamhet. Branschöversikten i successivt föränderlig form publiceras för 19:e året. Den distribueras till våra medlemmar i Svensk Teknik och Design och till de övriga företag som medver- kar i undersökningen. Den distribueras också till tongivande kundföretag, tidskrifter, konjunkturbedömare, företagsanalytiker m fl i Sverige och i övriga nordiska länder samt till svenska beskickningar och exportkontor. En engelsk upplaga (the Sector Review) distribueras till de utomnordiska företag som medverkar i vår undersökning samt till internationella utvecklingsbanker, utvecklingsorganisationer och förvaltningar inom EU, internationella tidskrifter m fl. Branschöversikten är beroende av medverkan från ett stort antal företag inom och utanför Sverige. Vi tackar alla som har bidragit till att göra denna sammanställning möjlig. Maritime trade and merchant shipping: The shipping/trade-ratio from the 1870s until today Jari Ojala, University of Jyväskylä Stig Tenold, Norwegian School of Economics This paper discusses the development of countries’ market shares in world shipping over the last 150 years. The analysis is based upon a new and purpose-built indicator: the shipping/trade-ratio. This indicator presents the relationship between the merchant marine of a country and the country’s role in world trade. Analysis of the shipping/trade-ratio identifies two important developments. First, although the share of the world fleet registered in Europe has dropped significantly, Europe’s role in world shipping over the last fifty years has been more stable than is commonly perceived. Second, there appears to have been an increasing specialisation in the world shipping industry, both among and within continents. Internationally and within Europe, certain “super-transporters” have acquired large market shares, while most countries have relatively limited fleets. “The sea-shore has been the point of departure, to knowledge, as to commerce. The most advanced nations are always those who navigate the most.”1 Introduction Within naval history, the question of “maritime power” plays an important role. Countless books have been written and numerous careers have been forged trying to define, discuss and debate the question of what constitutes maritime power and who the maritime powers are and have been.2 Within merchant shipping history, the power question has seldom been explicitly discussed, though it has been an implicit element of national historical narratives.

Using a new monthly dataset it is shown that freight rates can be well explained by economic activity, commodity prices, war risk and world tonnage in the period 1912 to 1916. In the first two years of the war part of the British merchant fleet was directly controlled by the Government but neutral shipping was basically free to operate as normal. In this period neutral shipping accounted for about one third of British imports. In the final two years of the war a much stricter regime of freight control was introduced that resulted in the withdrawal of a large proportion of neutral shipowners from British and Allied trade. Together with the mounting losses of tonnage due to the German submarine campaign this created an acute shortage of carrying capacity and reduced imports. It is argued that the policy of freight control may have rested on a misconception of the role of freight rates as a source of the high wartime inflation. While these data are collected for purely administrative purposes, they represent remarkable new opportunities for expanding our knowledge. This chapter describes some of the benefits and challenges associated with the use of administrative data in education research. I 1863 fikk Georg Ossian Sars i oppdrag av Departementet for det indre å kartlegge torskens vandringer. I tillegg til dette utførte han et banebrytende arbeid som beskrev torskens utvikling fra eggløsning til moden skrei. Dette arbeidet består av sju plansjer som beskriver torskens befruktning, embryologi, larveutvikling, metamorfose og vekst frem til kjønnsmoden skrei. Plansjeverket er Sars sine originaltegninger som han selv har kopiert fra sine opprinnelige skisser utført i Lofoten i 1860-årene. Disse plansjene ble laget til en internasjonal fiskeriutstilling som ble avholdt i museumsbygningen på Nygårdshøyden sommeren 1865; året før museet ble innviet. I forbindelse med utstillingen var D.C. Danielsen formann ved avdeling for fiskeprodukter og skulle blant annet sørge for fremvisning av de viktigste fiskeslagene. I sakens anledning henvendte han seg til Sars og ba om å få tilsendt eksemplarer av de forskjellige utviklingsstadier fra egg, larver og yngel som Sars hadde oppdaget. Han ønsket kopier av Sars sine tegninger "da selve organismene er små og hvad der foregaar kan ikke let sees med blott øie"... Danielsen skriver til Sars tre år senere og forteller at Georg Ossian Sars plansjeverket ble en publikumssuksess. Ifølge Danielsen hadde Sars sin beretning om skreiens utvikling "gjort megen Lykke paa disse kanter, ikke alene hele Bryggen og Børsen har læst den med stor interesse og tildels lært den utenad, men ogsaa Byens smukke Kjøn har fundet stort Behag i den" skriver en henrykt Danielsen.

    “Nobody ever thanks you for saving them from the disease they didn’t know they were going to get.” —WILLIAM FOEGE Smallpox and COVID-19: One pandemic public health leader’s story translates to a new generation Virology Central Within weeks of news of the outbreak in China, the UW Medicine Virology Laboratory was readying itself to deal with the novel coronavirus. And then on Jan. 21, Washington state recorded the first known case in the U.S., and a month later, the first known death. On March 2, the lab—then at the U.S. center of the outbreak—received FDA approval to perform testing and started with about 100 swabbed samples. Over the next two weeks, as the demand ramped up exponentially, the lab raced to increase its capacity—and was soon running about 1,800 tests and finding about 150 infections a day. The staff worked long days, sometimes 18 to 24 hours per shift, to help community leaders and public health officials make sound decisions about how to deal with this health crisis. During the spring, the lab often ran more tests than any other in the country. Only a few laboratories na- tionwide have the people, tools and resources to do this essential work. Until a treatment or therapy is found, testing and containment are at the heart of our nation’s response to the pandemic.   • Nordicom Information 2010(2-3)
    Foreword The media and communication research associations of the Nordic countries in cooperation with Nordicom have held conferences every second year since 1973. These Nordic conferences have contributed greatly to the development of media and communication research in the Nordic countries. The 19th conference in the series was held in Karlstad, Sweden, 13th-15th August 2009. Host for the con- ference was the Association for Swedish Media and Communication Research (FSMK). About 265 scholars from Denmark (37), Finland (43), Iceland (2), Norway (53) and Sweden (114) gathered to discuss current research and findings. In addition, some participants came from further afield, from the Baltic States, Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Israel, South Africa and the USA. The conference proceedings included plenary sessions with keynote speakers and thematic seminars in different working groups. In addition participants enjoyed a number of social gatherings and cultural events. The theme of the plenary ses- sions this year was Body, Soul and Society. This special issue of Nordicom Review contains all the lectures held in plenary sessions. As usual, the main business of the conference took place in the working group sessions. More than 175 research papers were presented in 12 working groups: Environment, Science and Risk Communication; Journalism Studies; Media and Communication History; Media, Culture and Society; Media, Globalization and Social Change; Media Literacy and Media Education; Media Organizations, Policy and Economy; Media, Technology and Aesthetics; Organization, Communication and Society; Political Communication; Theory, Philosophy and Ethics of Com- munication; and Theme Division: Body Soul and Society. Responsibility for arranging the conferences is divided into two parts.

Seminaret fandt sted på Klækken Hotel ved byen Hønefoss, der ligger i et skønt naturområde uden for Oslo, omgivet af et smukt have- og bakkelandskab. Nordisk natur havde gjort opmærksom på sig selv i ugerne op til seminaret, idet den islandske vulkan Eyjafjallajökull gik i udbrud. Askeskyen fra vulkanen påvirkede hele flytrafikken i Europa, men alle deltagerne nåede dog frem til seminaret i tide. På forskerseminaret i år var der to hovedtemaer: Grøn eller økologisk kriminologi og global kriminologi. Økologisk kriminologi henviser til de situationer, hvor ofret er naturen, klimaet og dyr, endog økosystemer som sådan. For ca. tyve år siden var miljøkriminalitet et tema på NSfKs forskerseminar i Danmark. Dengang var udgangspunktet strafferetligt og kriminalpolitisk. På dette års seminar var udgangspunktet af mere kriminologisk karakter. Det er NSfK‘s hensigt, at miljøkriminalitet og økologisk kriminologi skal være prioriterede emner i den nuværende rådsperiode. Global kriminologi er et nyt begreb, som omfatter mange ældre forskningsfelter, såsom transnational kriminalitet, menneskehandel, narko- tikasmugling, internationalt politisamarbejde og forbrydelser mod menneskerettigheder. Nu ser man på disse emner som en enhed med stadig voksende betydning i en mere globaliseret verden.
