A supplementary finding-aid to the archives relating to Maori Schools held in the Auckland Regional Office of Archives New Zealand MAORI SCHOOL RECORDS, 1879-1969 Archives New Zealand Auckland holds records relating to approximately 449 Maori Schools, which were transferred by the Department of Education. These schools cover the whole of New Zealand. In 1969 the Maori Schools were integrated into the State System. Since then some of the former Maori schools have transferred their records to Archives New Zealand Auckland. Building and Site Files (series 1001) For most schools we hold a Building and Site file. These usually give information on: • the acquisition of land, specifications for the school or teacher’s residence, sometimes a plan. • letters and petitions to the Education Department requesting a school, providing lists of families’ names and ages of children in the local community who would attend a school. (Sometimes the school was never built, or it was some years before the Department agreed to the establishment of a school in the area). The files may also contain other information such as: • initial Inspector’s reports on the pupils and the teacher, and standard of buildings and grounds; • correspondence from the teachers, Education Department and members of the school committee or community; • pre-1920 lists of students’ names may be included. There are no Building and Site files for Church/private Maori schools as those organisations usually erected, paid for and maintained the buildings themselves. Admission Registers (series 1004) provide details such as: - Name of pupil - Date enrolled - Date of birth - Name of parent or guardian - Address - Previous school attended - Years/classes attended - Last date of attendance - Next school or destination Attendance Returns (series 1001 and 1006) provide: - Name of pupil - Age in years and months - Sometimes number of days attended at time of Return Log Books (series 1003) Written by the Head Teacher/Sole Teacher this daily diary includes important events and various activities held at the school. -

If a gate is open or closed leave it that way. • A farm is the owner’s livelihood and if they say no dogs, then please respect this. • When driving on riverbeds keep to marked tracks or park on the bank and walk to your fishing spot. • Never push in on a pool occupied by another angler. If you are in any doubt have a chat and work out who goes where. • However, if agreed to share the pool then always enter behind any angler already there. • Move upstream or downstream with every few casts (unless you are alone). -

This floodplain management strategy reviews what the flood hazards are in the floodplains, what flood protection is provided to people and property living on the floodplains and what, if any, additional protection needs to be provided. Floodplain management strategies are not the same as Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM) Plans. Under the Civil Defence Emergency Act 2002 each regional and local council must prepare plans detailing how they will manage catastrophic events such as volcanic eruptions, tsunami storms, earthquakes and fires. Construction of flood defences began in the catchment in 1965 and this was complete by the early 1980’s. Since that period components of the flood defence system have been reviewed but not all together. This floodplain management strategy reviews the flood protection system for the Whakatane Waimana catchment only. It identifies potential weaknesses in flood protection and plans for the ongoing security of future generations. The executive summary provides an overview of the report. Part one describes the nature of the floodplain, and the measures put in place to best manage floods of date. -

The land comes alive with stories, with both personal and public history. At the climax of the story, the boy and his grandmother are looking across Ohiwa Harbour to Hokianga Island. Department of Conservation, P.O. Box 668, Gisborne Northern Te Urewera Draft Ecosystem Restoration SUMMARY In ecological terms, Te Urewera is a fantastic place. It is the largest example of natural landscape and related ecosystems remaining in the North Island. This vast tract of lowland forest has a complement of vegetation, flora and fauna as complete as anywhere on mainland New Zealand, including a large kokako population. It has unique assemblages of land, vegetation, and threatened species, with a special Tuhoe history and character. Previous agencies and the Department of Conservation have been carrying out active management in the northern Te Urewera for many years. It has now been decided to carry out even more intensive management of one part of northern Te Urewera (Otamatuna, in the Waimana Valley), with associated monitoring to assess the effectiveness of management. This is an active management programme with associated performance monitoring, rather than a research project. If successful, the intention is to use this as a template for wider ecosystem restoration management in Te Urewera. The Department’s vision for this area is “To acknowledge and nurture the mauri of the northern Te Urewera ecosystem”. This is a challenge that will not be easily attained, to protect and enhance the vegetation and wildlife as a representative example of healthy functioning lowland forest ecosystem. -

It is important to recognise that there can be a shift in what we value over time, particularly as information and knowledge of a place is extended. Places we value now may not always have been recognised or valued as highly. The Study has confirmed that the Opotiki town centre contains a built heritage resource of regional and national significance. Research, inspections and analysis undertaken as part of the study provide comprehensive information about heritage resources in Opotiki. The Opotiki Historic Heritage Study includes an historic overview of Opotiki which summarises key themes in the historic development of the centre. This research has been used to analyse built and archaeological heritage resources in Opotiki town centre and to review the approach to management of these resources, as a knowledgeable starting point for this debate. -

TEREO pAHO Maori Radio and Language Revitalisation A thesis presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Maori Studies at Massey University Rangianehu Matamua Te Kunenga ki Piirehuroa Massey University 2006 ABSTRACT There is certainly a widely held belief among Maori working on the revitalisation of the Maori language that radio broadcasting has had a small, but significant, place for over half a century in bringing Maori language to both Maori and Pakeha audiences. Maori radio itself was established on the premise of Maori language and cultural transmission, maintenance and development. It was fo r this reason that many Maori organisations and individuals toiled towards Maori recognition within the radio arena. In 1988 Te Opoko 6 Te Ika, the first Maori radio station, went to air. With the restructuring of the broadcasting industry in the late 1980s and subsequent successful claims brought before the Waitangi Tribunal, provision was made fo r radio frequencies to be set aside by Maori, preferably with tribal endorsement. Since that time there has been a significant expansion in Maori radio. At present there are twenty-one Te Mangai Paho-funded Maori radio stations broadcasting in Aotearoa New Zealand. Yet after nearly twenty years of Maori radio, what has been the impact of the medium, and its contribution to Maori-Ianguage revitalisation? By using the five years of qualitative and quantitative research data collected by Te Reo Paho on Maori radio, and combining this with further research contained within this study, this thesis will answer the above questions.
