In Israel During Yom Hashoah & Memorial In Israel during Yom HaShoah & Memorial Day This post will be part travelogue and part historical & political reflection. I was in Israel during the last week in April and the first in May, introducing my lady friend to the country on her first visit. Highlights included Hillel Schenker (our fellow blogger and co-editor of the Palestine-Israel Journal) giving us a guided tour of his lovely historic neighborhood in Tel Aviv. This is Hillel’s recounting of our walk: We went first to the Opera Tower, where we saw the site where the first Knesset was convened. Opposite that on the beach at the end of Allenby Street is the spot where the first 60 lots were divided up among the founders of Tel Aviv in 1909. White City of Tel-Aviv — UNESCO World Heritage Centre We walked down historic Bialik Street, stopped at the Reuven Rubin Museum (his house and studio), and on to Beit Bialik [the former home of celebrated poet Chaim Nachman Bialik]. The historic building on Bialik Square is the old Tel Aviv Municipality Building (1925-1966), where Mayor Dizengoff originally held sway. It is now Beit Ha’ir, the Museum of the City of Tel Aviv. Our last major stop was at the Trumpeldor Cemetery, where many of the Zionist and city founders are buried, and more contemporary cultural icons like Arik Einstein and Shoshana Damari. The entire area is called Old or Lev (Heart) Tel Aviv, and it is the heart of the Bauhaus area which was declared a Modern Architectural Heritage Site by UNESCO. Painting of early Tel Aviv by Reuven Rubin We also were moved by the Palmach Museum and the Yitzhak Rabin Center, and enjoyed touring Yaffo (Jaffa). In an innovative audio-visual walk-through, the Palmach Museum depicts the lives of members of a Palmach unit from its initial creation under British tutelage during WW II through the 1948 War of Independence. This is the museum’s email response to my question as to whether this presented the lives of actual historical people: The characters portrayed in the exhibition are fictional – there were no Amnon, Shayke, Ofra etc. in a specific Palmach platoon – but every character is made up of many REAL stories (for example, Amnon’s experiences are based on parts from Yitzhak Rabin’s memoirs), and the characters represent different archetypes of Palmachniks – the commander, the holocaust survivor, the sabra, the warrior girl, the secular Palmachnik from a Kibbutz and the one who came from an Orthodox family. The Palmach was first created by the British in 1941 with a complement of 600 to help safeguard Palestine from German and Italian forces. Palmach fighters served the British in strategic commando raids into Syria and Lebanon, both then under Vichy-French control. It was officially disbanded a year and a half later, after the British had defeated Rommel at the Battle of El Alamein. But the mainstream Zionist militia, the Haganah, maintained it underground, with pre-State missions that included running the British naval blockade with Holocaust survivors and the blowing up of all border bridges into Palestine on a single night (also in defiance of the British). Until its incorporation into the brand-new Israel Defense Forces during the 1948 War of Independence, a total of 7,000 men and women served in the Palmach, with over 1100 killed (most in the ’48 war). We were emotionally affected by the sacrifices and losses depicted in the museum drama, but I also noticed one glaring lacuna: when one of the characters, then an officer stationed at headquarters, is asked from the field what to do with the masses of Arab civilians being encountered, he hesitates for a minute and simply says, “Do what you think is right.” We now know that what some thought was “right” (as related most recently in Ari Shavit’s My Promised Land) was to massacre a number of them — at least a few hundred — and to forcefully drive off tens of thousands of others from their homes, contributing mightily to the 700,000 or more who became refugees. Even as he depicts some of these events in horrifying detail, Shavit argues that they were necessary and inevitable for the creation of the State of Israel. I know that these atrocities occurred during a full-scale ethnic war that was initiated by the other side, immediately after the United Nations General Assembly voted for partition in November 1947, and in which they too committed atrocities and engaged in ethnic cleansing where their forces triumphed (mainly in East Jerusalem and in the Etzion Bloc). Palestinian Arab militia forces staged widespread attacks on the Yishuv (the organized Jewish community in Palestine), laying siege to Jerusalem and the Etzion Bloc and endangering traffic on most roads. About one thousand Jewish civilians were killed. And, upon Israel’s declaration of independence on May 14, 1948, Arab armies invaded from several directions and from at least five countries. But when the Arabs of Lydda were forced out of their homes, as described by Shavit, in July 1948, Israeli forces had already gained the upper hand on most fronts. It can be argued that Israel had more to gain by persuading the Arabs that they could coexist as citizens of the new Israeli state, but the still fresh wounds and passions of a bloody war, not to end for another half year (plus the felt needs of hundreds of thousands of stateless refugees from the Holocaust) obviously argued otherwise. I would disagree that these actions were absolutely necessary or inevitable, but they were both understandable and likely given the immediate circumstances of all-out war. Click for Part 2. .

Music teachers at school never bothered with classical music, neither Western nor Arabian, and traditional Ashkenazi liturgies – let alone Sephardic – were not even taken into account. The early pioneer music was hard to stomach, and not only because it didn’t belong to our generation and wasn’t part of our heritage. More specifically, we were gagging on something shoved obsessively down our throat by political authority. Our “founding fathers” and their children never spared us any candid detail regarding the bodily reaction they experience when hearing the music brought here by our fathers, and the music we created here. But not much was said regarding the thoughts and feelings of Mizrahi immigrants (nor about their children who were born into it) who came here and heard what passed as Israeli music, nor about their children who were born into it.

A part of the outer retaining wall of the Second Temple that was destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE, it is the place closest to the ancient Holy of Holies, where only the Kohanim— —Jewish priests were allowed access. When Israel gained independence in 1948, Jordan controlled the Western Wall and all of the Old City of Jerusalem; the city was reunified in the 1967 Six-Day War. The Western Wall is considered an Orthodox synagogue by Israeli authorities, with separate prayer spaces for men and women. A mixed egalitarian prayer area operates along a nearby section of the Temple’s retaining wall, raising to the forefront contemporary ideas of religious expression—a prime example of how Israel navigates between past and present. SITES AND INSIGHTS theicenter.org SHUK ׁשוּק Every Israeli city has an open-air market, or shuk, where vendors sell everything from fresh fruits and vegetables to clothing, appliances, and souvenirs. There’s no other place that feels more authentically Israeli than a shuk on Friday afternoon, as seemingly everyone shops for Shabbat. Drawn by the freshness and variety of produce, Israelis and tourists alike flock to the shuk, turning it into a microcosm of the country. Shuks in smaller cities and towns operate just one day per week, while larger markets often play a key role in the city’s cultural life. At night, after the vendors go home, Machaneh Yehuda— —Jerusalem’s shuk, turns into the city’s nightlife hub.

    1 The Soundtrack of Israel: The Story of Israel at 66 through the songs of Arik Einstein Israel turns sixty six this year and a so much has happened in this seemingly short lifetime. Every war, every peace treaty, every struggle, and every accomplishment has left its impact on the ever changing character of the Jewish State. But throughout all of these ups and downs, all of the conflicts and all of the progress, there has been one voice that has consistently spoken for the Jewish nation, one voice that has represented Israelis for all 66 years and will continue to represent a people far into the future. That is the voice of Arik Einstein. Einstein’s music, referred to by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the “soundtrack of Israel,” transcended generations. Einstein often took the words of high-brow Israeli poets such as Chaim Nachman Bialik, Rahel, Nathan Alterman and Avraham Halfi and turned them into rock anthems sung by vibrant Israeli youth. Einstein captured the heart and soul of Israelis old and young. For every Zionist, peacenik, settler, hopeless romantic, nostalgia aficionado and child (or child at heart) in Israel, there is at least one Arik Einstein song that speaks to them. For every historic Israeli moment, there is an Arik Einstein song that represents the emotion of a united nation, or a shuttered people. Although fairly unknown outside of Israel, Arik Einstein was loved by all, and mourned by all after his sudden death in November of 2013, when tens of thousands of Israelis joined together to pay their respects to the iconic Sabra at a memorial service in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv.

    Lahiton [email protected] 1 Lahiton magazine was founded in 1969 by two partners, Uri Aloni and David Paz, and was funded by an investment from Avraham Alon, a Ramlah nightclub owner and promoter. Uri Aloni was a pop culture writer and rabid music fan while David Paz, another popular music enthusiast, was an editor who knew his way around the technical side of print production. The name “Lahiton,” reportedly invented by entertainers Rivka Michaeli and Ehud Manor, combines the Hebrew words for hit, “lahit” and newspaper, “iton.” Lahiton [email protected] 2 Uri Aloni cites the British fan magazines Melody Maker and New Music Express as influences; (Eshed 2008) while living in London and writing for the pop music columns of Yediot Ahronot and La-Isha, he would lift editorial content and photos from the latest British pop magazines, write articles, then find an Israel-bound traveler at the London airport to transport the articles into the hands of his editors. In Lahiton’s early days, Aloni and Paz continued this practice (Edut 2014). Eventually, however Lahiton’s flavor became uniquely secular Israeli. Although in 1965 the Beatles were famously denied permission to perform in Israel (Singer 2015), by the time Lahiton got started in 1969 there was no stemming the tide; the international pop music scene had permeated Israel’s insular and conservative culture. At the time there were no other Hebrew publications that covered what was going on both at home and in America and Europe. Lahiton began as a bimonthly publication, but within the first year, when press runs of 5000 copies sold out on a regular basis, Paz and Aloni turned it into a weekly.

    Art and Culture in Contemporary Israel Class code CORE-UA 9764 Instructor Details Aviv Livnat Prerequisites None Class Description The location of Israel at the geographic junction between the West and the East, between the Arab world and the Western world, against the background of the long historical complexity of this piece of land provides the context for the course Expressive Culture: Art and Culture in Contemporary Israel" which will offer a panoramic view of expressive cultures in modern Israel. This course will provide an introduction to Israeli culture and art by examining thematic crossroads and ideas, via problems and social conflicts which lie at the heart of those art works and are reflected by them. Themes to be addressed will include: religion and secularism, universalism/globalism versus localism, Jews and Arabs, Ashkenazic and Sephardic cultures, multiculturalism in Israel, Zionism and Post-Zionism, right and left political world views, questions of gender, historical perspectives on war and peace and the Holocaust. The students will explore the way different forms of art – visual, literary, and performance – reflect and shape the understanding of the "Israeli mosaic" while learning about the way the artists and writers internalize, consciously and unconsciously the complex Israeli reality. Towards this end, the course will incorporate an exclusive audiography, image bank and collection of video materials and will include excursions to cultural institutions and events in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Expressive culture is a way to embody, analyze and express culture through sensory experiences such as movements, sounds texts and images. The students will be invited to engage in processes, exposed to ideas and emotions, bound within the social production of aesthetic forms and performances in Israeli life and culture.
