Hall A generally accurate appraisal of Western films might claim that In dians as hostiles are grouped into one undifferentiated mass. Popular hostile groups include the Sioux (without much differentiation between tribes or bands, the Apaches, and the Comanches). Today we will examine the images of Apache and Comanche groups as presen ted in several Western films. In some cases, these groups are shown with specific, historically identifiable leaders such as Cochise, Geron imo, or Quanah Parker.

  • Twentieth Century Fox: 1935-1965
The Museum of Modern Art For Immediate Release June 1990 Twentieth Century Fox: 1935-1965 July 1 - September 11, 1990 This summer, The Museum of Modern Art pays tribute to Twentieth Century Fox with a retrospective of over ninety films made between 1935 and 1965. Opening on July 1, 1990, TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX: 1935-1965 traces three key decades in the history of the studio, celebrating the talents of the artists on both sides of the cameras who shaped this period. The exhibition continues through September 11. Formed in 1915, the Fox Film Corporation merged in 1935 with the much younger Twentieth Century to launch a major new studio. Under the supervision of Darryl F. Zanuck, Twentieth Century Fox developed a new house style, emphasizing epic biographies such as John Ford's The Prisoner of Shark Island (1936) and Allan Dwan's Suez (1938) and snappy urban pictures such as Sidney Lanfield's Hake Up and Live (1937) and Roy Del Ruth's Thanks a Million (1935). The studio also featured such fresh screen personalities as Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, and Shirley Temple. From this time on, the studio masterfully anticipated and shaped the tastes of the movie-going public. During World War II, Twentieth Century Fox made its mark with a series of exuberant Technicolor musicals featuring such actresses as Betty Grable and Carmen Miranda. After the war, the studio shifted focus and began to highlight other genres including films noirs such as Edmund Goulding's Nightmare Alley (1947) and Otto Preminger's Where the Sidewalk Ends (1950), wry satirical films such as Joseph L.

NOTES ON JEFFREY HUNTER AND HIS FILMS by Jim Meyer "Jeffrey Hunter is beautiful!" a girl friend gurgled to me some 15 years ago. And indeed he was, as any man not envious of Hunter's impressive 6' 1" height and blue-eyed, brown-haired handsomeness must admit. As is well enough known, many film actors have little more to offer audiences than handsomeness. But far too many critics (men and women alike) too quickly tabbed the exceptionally hand- some actor "beautiful but bland." But teen-age girls didn't mind. Many didn't care whether he could act. In Jeffrey Hunter they saw (or thought they saw) a dream prince, a husky young god, who could fulfill their most imaginative fantasies. Less dazzled male viewers saw something else: a man who was handsome enough for them to resent, largely, one suspects, because many of them wished that his good looks belonged to them, and, not being able to measure up, consoled themselves by insisting that he couldn't act and wouldn't last long in films. Obviously, Hunter had to work twice as hard as many another actor of his type to prove he was a good actor. I believe he succeeded although he never became a superstar. Did Hunter's good looks make him arrogant, overbearing, and hard to work with? Possibly not, when one recalls that Jean Peters, a co-star of his, once went out of her way to observe that his courtesy toward and consideration for her would be remarkable anywhere but especially in Hollywood.

  • Debra Paget - Jeffrey Hunter
DEBRA PAGET - JEFFREY HUNTER Two Young Stars of Films Descend on New Orleans Debra Paget and Jeffrey Hunter plug "Siege" Personable and friendly, even after a week of dodging tornadoes and riding rough airplanes, two of Hollywood's young stars descended on New Orleans Saturday afternoon. Debra Paget, eye- catching in a skin-tight brown dress, and Jeffrey Hunter, handsome New Orleans native, came to town to plug "The Siege at Red River" by means of an autograph party Saturday night at the Panorama. "Actually we are here in place of Van Johnson and Joanne Dru the stars of the picture," Hunter said. "Both have other assignments." The stars, with various publicity men and agents, arrived at Moisant Interna- tional Airport about 43 minutes late after a bouncy trip from Memphis. Their week-long tour ends here and Sunday they head back for California. Neither of the 20th Century Fox stars appears in "The Siege at Red River." The last picture they did together was "Princess of the Nile." Miss Paget has been in pictures for six years, since she was 14. Originally she came from Denver. Her folks all have been in show business and the kids are keeping up a good batting average. Of three brothers and sisters who have had screen tests, all were put under contract, Miss Paget said. "Mother is a friend of a talent scout at 20th Century Fox," Miss Paget said. "Maybe that had something to do with our good fortune. He told her he would give any of us a screen test anytime." Hunter got into pictures via a college production.
