¶ Introduction

Singing the opening dialogue, , and conclusion of the Eucharistic Prayer has been part of the received tradition of the Church since the earliest times. The President’s Edition of accordingly contains a music supplement with settings of Eucharistic Prayers A, B, C and E to chants derived from the traditional melodies of the , based principally on Sarum tones. There are also three examples of new settings (of Prayers D, F and G) prepared especially for Common Worship. Settings of Eucharistic Prayers F and G to the traditional chant melodies may be found in the Common Worship area of the Church of England web site.

Contents of this Section

The present volume is intended to include everything needed by the president for a celebration of Holy according to Order One (contemporary language) on Festivals, Lesser Festivals and Special Occasions. This music section completes that provision. For Prayers A, B, C and E (the prayers with which the Prefaces and Extended Prefaces contained in this volume may be used), there is provision for the singing of the dialogue, preface and to the traditional chant melodies. This includes provision for Prefaces. The settings are by Father Peter Allan CR.

In order to keep this section within manageable proportions, some material has not been included. For Prayer B, only the dialogue, preface, acclamations and doxology are set to music, and not the whole prayer as in the President’s edition. For each and Special Occasion and for the of the Faithful Departed (the only Lesser Festival for which one of the Commons is not used), one Preface and one Extended Preface have been set, and for each Common no more than two.

Singing the Chant

All the chants are presented at modal pitch, with C as the notional reciting note. However, the G clef (devised for the President’s edition of Common Worship) is a reminder that this pitch is relative rather than absolute. In most cases, the president will wish to sing these chants at a lower pitch, most likely beginning the dialogue on D, E flat, E or F (with a principal reciting note of G, A flat, A or B flat) according to the range of the voice.

The chant should be sung flowingly at a steady speaking pace, bearing in mind the shape and stress of the text; hollow notes are provided where the reciting pitch is unchanged, and doubled black notes indicate suggested lengthening or weighted sound. Often this will be roughly equivalent to doubling the length of the note. At the end of a phrase such as ‘Lift up your hearts’, which has two notes set to ‘hearts’, both notes are slightly lengthened, with the second sung more gently than the first.

For those Common Prefaces in which the ’s name comes at the end of a line, alternative settings are provided for names of one, two, three or four syllables. In the case of three-syllable names there are two alternatives – one for those in which the first syllable is stressed and one for use where the stress is on the second syllable.
