Call to Worship We gather around the words of Christ: “Come, and follow me.” We gather around the voice of the Spirit: “Come, and follow me.” Let us worship God together and follow Christ into the world. Hymn #260 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God Ein’ feste Burg A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing. For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, and, armed with cruel hate, on earth is not his equal. Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing; Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing. Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He, Lord Sabaoth His name, from age to age the same, And He must win the battle. And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo! his doom is sure, one little word shall fell him. ~continued on next page~ That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him who with us sideth; Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill, God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever. Words: Martin Luther, 1529, Trans. Frederick Henry Hedge, 1852. Music: Martin Luther, 1529 The Presbyterian Hymnal: Hymns, Psalms, and Spiritual Songs © 1990 Westminster/John Knox Press. Public domain. Prayer of Confession O Holy God, you called the disciples to drop their nets and follow you, yet we are hesitant to drop the tools and comforts of our lives. We distract ourselves from your call with busyness, stress, and worry. We tangle ourselves in webs of sin that disguise themselves as fear. Forgive us, O Lord, and by your forgiveness, open our ears to hear your voice saying to us, “Follow me.” (please continue in silent prayer) Declaration of Forgiveness The Peace The Peace of Christ be with you. And also with you. ~The Word~ Prayer for Illumination Speak to us your word, O God, that we may hear Jesus’ call to be his disciples. Amen. First Scripture Reading: Jonah 3:1-5, 10 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 62 Dr. Angela Batey, psalmist Simon Lesley Refrain: On God alone my soul waits in stillness. Wait on God alone in stillness, O my soul; for in him is my hope. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken. Refrain In God is my strength and my glory; God is my strong rock; in him is my refuge. Put your trust in him always, my people; pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge. Refrain The peoples are but a breath, the whole human race a deceit; on the scales they are altogether lighter than air. Put no trust in oppression; in robbery take no empty pride; though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it. Refrain God spoke once, and twice have I heard the same, that power belongs to God. Steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord, for you repay everyone according to their deeds. Refrain From New Psalms for Common Worship, Editor/Arranger Simon Lesley, Publisher: Kevin Mayhew Reprinted with permission under ONE LICENSE #A-735032. All rights reserved. Second Scripture Reading: Mark 1:14-20 The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Sermon “Go Fish” Rev. Matt Nieman ~The Response~ Affirmation of Faith – from the PCUSA Brief Statement of Faith In a broken and fearful world, the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” The Anthem Abide with Me arr. Gumma Handbell Tree and Piano Call for the Offering Prayers of Thanksgiving and Intercession The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. ~The Sending~ Hymn #377 Lord, You Have Come to the Lakeshore Pescador de Hombres You have come up to the lakeshore, looking neither for wise nor wealthy. You only wanted that I should follow. Refrain: O Lord, with Your eyes You have searched me, And, while smiling, have called out my name. Now my boat’s left on the shoreline behind me, now with You I will seek other seas. You know that I own so little, in my boat there’s no money nor weapons, You’ll only find there my nets and labor. Refrain You need the caring of my hands. Through my tiredness, may others find resting. You need a love that just goes on loving. Refrain You, who have fished other oceans, ever longed for by souls that are waiting, My dear and good friend, as thus You call me. Refrain Text: Cesáreo Gabaráin, 1979, Trans. If the weather allows, outdoor worship will be held at 11:00 a.m. _____________________ With pandemic restrictions and safeguards currently in place, our annual congregational meeting will be conducted through Zoom this year. We will review the ministry of 2020, look ahead to 2021, and approve the pastor’s terms of call. The links to the Zoom meeting will be included in Pastor Matt’s weekend email on January 30. If you do not receive FPC Constant Contact emails, you can sign up to be on the distribution list on our website: www.fpctn.org. Please plan on participating in this important FPC event. The area Presbyterian Churches in partnership with Edward Jones will be constructing a Habitat for Humanity home in Knoxville beginning on March 20, 2021. The cost of this project is $55000 and Edward Jones has committed to pay $25,000 leaving $30,000 to be raised by the area Presbyterian Churches. Farragut Presbyterian Church has pledged $2000 from the Outreach budget for this project. Per the Presbytery E- Newsletter, only $11,000 of the $30,000 needed has been pledged so far. Habitat of Knoxville is in need of volunteers from the area churches to help in the construction of this home along with volunteers from Edward Jones. Work will be done on Saturdays beginning on March 20, 2021. Volunteers can work whatever number of days or time their schedule allows. If you, would like to contribute as a volunteer or donor, please contact Wayne Walls ([email protected]) for more information on how to assist. Candles for the Homeless: Baby, it’s cold outside! A Place at The Table, a homeless ministry in Knoxville, serves the homeless community each Monday night, no matter what the weather. In the winter months they particularly need pillar and tapered candles, slightly used will do. Why do they need candles? The homeless use them for light on these dark nights and they also use them for heat. That’s right — heat. Those with tarp tents burn the candles close to them for the heat from the flame. If you have some candles to donate, please contact Rev. Patricia Ramsden at [email protected] or drop them off at the church office. _____________________ Our guest families have been sheltering in place since March, though there have been several families that found housing, and several new ones entered the program. Hopefully, we will soon be able to be with our families. Oh, how we have missed that interaction. Our dates for this year are: January 24-31 • August 29-September 5 • December 19-26 Gratefully, the signup for drop-off meals and gas/grocery cards in January has been filled.
