YYaszekaszek ffinal.indbinal.indb xxiiii 111/21/20071/21/2007 111:41:191:41:19 AAMM IINTRODUCTIONN T R O D U C T I O N SSTRANGETRANGE RREADINGEADING NEW SCIENCE fi ction (SF) magazine called The Avalonian hit the newsstands in 1952. The debut issue a featured an anchor story by Lilith Lorraine—an SF vet- eran who had been writing for more than two decades and who also published The Avalonian—and half a dozen more pieces by writers largely unknown to the genre’s growing readership. Among the latter was a very short story by Helen Reid Chase entitled “Night of Fire.” In less than four pages Chase rallies a galactic civilization, recapitulates cold war nuclear fears, ridicules religious zealots, razes planet Earth, and fi nally saves a select fraction of humanity for a destiny among the stars. “Night of Fire” is both utterly typical and truly remark- able for its time. An intergalactic alien council decides that humans, with their deadly combination of advanced atomic technologies and apocalyptic religious impulses, have set themselves on the path to total annihilation. Exhibiting a rather fi ne sense of irony, the council stages a fake rapture and spirits away those few earthlings “of very unusual intelligence” who have adhered to the principles of rational and benevolent behavior, leaving behind a scorched earth for the very same religious fanatics who prophesied apocalypse in the fi rst place (33). 1 YYaszekaszek ffinal.indbinal.indb 1 111/21/20071/21/2007 111:41:191:41:19 AAMM 2 - Introduction Because Chase valorizes empirical science over fundamentalist religion and reasoned intelligence over rote faith, her story is very much a recognizable part of the SF tradition. But in a historical moment when science and technology (not to mention stories about them) were considered primarily the province of male scientists, politicians, and artists, Chase’s story departs from tradition by focus- ing on the fate of women in the high-tech world of tomorrow. “Night of Fire” is told from multiple perspectives, including that of Mrs. Brandon, a woman of “meager intellect” who shuns science, technol- ogy, and education in general while embracing strict religious piety and merciless domestic order (32). Not surprisingly, when she is left behind with all the other anti-intellectual zealots, Mrs. Brandon loses both her faith and her mind. As a parodic embodiment of the con- ventional feminine virtues celebrated by many postwar Americans, the character of Mrs.

It’s a fine show that you should try to attend. Upcoming conventions include Robert E. Howard Days in Cross Plains, Texas on June 7 – 8, and the Edgar Rice Burroughs Chain of Friendship, planned for the weekend of June 13 – 15. It will take place in Oakbrook, Illinois. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like there will be a spring edition of Ray Walsh’s Classicon. Currently, William Patrick Maynard and I are writing about the programming that will be featured at PulpFest 2019. We’ll be posting about the panels and presentations through June 10. Today, large-scale space habitation, and the opportunity to take advantage of the vast resources and possibilities of outer space, remains more in the realm of speculation than reality. We have experienced fifteen years of continuous space habitation and construction, with another seven years scheduled. Yet we have still not been able to take major steps towards commercial and industrial space development, which is usually the most-cited reason for establishing orbital colonies. This is mainly due to the prohibitively high cost, even today. In this situation, we cannot easily afford the luxury of testing how such systems could eventually work in space. This leaves us looking for analogous situations. While some scientists have sought this in the mountains of Hawaii, this does not tell the full story. We are unable to properly fathom or test how a large-scale industrial and tourism operation, as it is expected will eventually exist on-orbit, on Earth. This led us to the idea of building an oceanic base. The ocean is, in many ways, similar to free space. Large swathes of it remain unexplored. There are unrealised commercial opportunities. There are hostile yet exciting environments. Creating basic life support and pressure-containing structures are challenging.

However, if the long term goal of space exploration is to land humans on the surface of Mars, NASA needs precursor missions that combine operating for very long durations and great distances. This will allow astronauts to learn how to work in deep space for months at a time and address many of the risks associated with a Mars mission lasting over 1,000 days in deep space, such as the inability to abort home or resupply in an emergency. A facility placed in an orbit in the vicinity of the Moon, called a Deep Space Transit Habitat (DSTH), is an ideal place to gain experience operating in deep space. This next generation of in-space habitation will be evolvable, flexible, and modular. It will allow astronauts to demonstrate they can operate for months at a time beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The DSTH can also be an international collaboration, with partnering nations contributing elements and major subsystems, based on their expertise.

    "The Love Token of a Token Immigrant": Judith Merril's Expatriate Narrative, 1968-1972 by Jolene McCann A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA April 2006 © Jolene McCann, 2006 Abstract Judith Merril was an internationally acclaimed science fiction (sf) writer and editor who expatriated from the United States to Canada in November 1968 with the core of what would become the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy in Toronto. Merril chronicled her transition from a nominal American or "token immigrant" to an authentic Canadian immigrant in personal documents and a memoir, Better to Have Loved: the Life of Judith Merril (2002). I argue that Sidonie Smith's travel writing theory, in particular, her notion of the "expatriate narrative" elucidates Merril's transition from a 'token' immigrant to a representative token of the American immigrant community residing in Toronto during the 1960s and 1970s. I further argue that Judith Merril's expatriate narrative links this personal transition to the simultaneous development of her science fiction library from its formation at Rochdale College to its donation by Merril in 1970 as a special branch of the Toronto Public Library (TPL). Named for the inexpensive wood pulp paper on which they were printed, they varied widely as to genre, including aviation fiction, fantasy, horror and weird fiction, detective and crime fiction, railroad fiction, romance, science fiction, sports stories, war fiction, and western fiction. In the pulps’ heyday a bookshop or newsstand might offer dozens of different magazines on these subjects, often from the same publishers and featuring work by the same writers, with lurid, striking cover and interior art by the same artists.     Science Fiction Module Convenors: Dr Caroline Edwards & Dr Joe Brooker Module Level: BA Level 6 (optional module) Time: Wednesdays 6-7.20pm, 2014-15 Module description This module introduces students to some of the key concepts and methodological approaches used in the contemporary study of science fiction (SF). SF is understood inclusively, as a capacious genre overlapping at times with fantasy, utopian/dystopian literature, Gothic, satire, speculative fiction, and the alternate mappings of literary history offered by modernism or postmodernism. Focusing on its development throughout the twentieth and into the twenty-first century, we will consider the ways in which SF has evolved: in particular in the novel and the short story, but also at times invoking other forms such as drama and film. We will be drawing on a range of critical approaches through which to explore some of the defining interests of SF literature and to reflect upon its critical reception in secondary literature. Module aims and objectives • To develop understanding of debates about genre. What is ‘genre fiction’? What distinctions or hierarchies are established between ‘literary’ and ‘genre’ texts? How have our understandings of SF as a genre changed over the last century? • To become familiar with recurring tropes such as robots, space exploration, genetic engineering, dystopian futures and (post-) apocalyptic worlds. • To explore ways that Science Fiction has acted as a social commentary on contemporary society. • To gain an understanding of how Science Fiction has explored ideas including parallel worlds, alternate histories and different models of time and reality. • To gain knowledge of diverse critical approaches to SF, including those from Marxism, structuralism, gender studies, postcolonial theory, cultural history, adaptation studies, ecocriticism and utopianism / dystopianism.
