Judith Merril's Expatriate Narrative, 1968-1972 by Jolene Mccann a Thesis Submi "The Love Token of a Token Immigrant": Judith Merril's Expatriate Narrative, 1968-1972 by Jolene McCann A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA April 2006 © Jolene McCann, 2006 Abstract Judith Merril was an internationally acclaimed science fiction (sf) writer and editor who expatriated from the United States to Canada in November 1968 with the core of what would become the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy in Toronto. Merril chronicled her transition from a nominal American or "token immigrant" to an authentic Canadian immigrant in personal documents and a memoir, Better to Have Loved: the Life of Judith Merril (2002). I argue that Sidonie Smith's travel writing theory, in particular, her notion of the "expatriate narrative" elucidates Merril's transition from a 'token' immigrant to a representative token of the American immigrant community residing in Toronto during the 1960s and 1970s. I further argue that Judith Merril's expatriate narrative links this personal transition to the simultaneous development of her science fiction library from its formation at Rochdale College to its donation by Merril in 1970 as a special branch of the Toronto Public Library (TPL). "' Introduction Judith Merril (1923-1997), the 1950s science fiction (sf) writer and then internationally acclaimed science fiction anthologist and critic, left her position of power as the doyen of American science fiction and became an intellectual and political refugee in Toronto during the fall of 1968. Merril arrived in Toronto as a 'token,' or self-ascribed nominal emigre, "with fresh immigrant status, eight thousand books and magazines" and "fifteen file drawers of jumbled junk and value."2 She predicated her decision to leave the United States for Canada on immediate circumstances, including the Vietnam War and the violent suppression of dissent at home; however, a lifetime of political activism informed her choice. Merril was at the time forty-five years old, thrice married, and the mother of two grown daughters; she was the daughter of Zionists, a former teenage Trotskyist, and an aspiring "world citizen."3 Her early exposure to science fiction was through the Futurians of New York, a group of young Americans who were science fiction fans and aspiring writers and publishers during the late 1930s and World War II. Politics influenced these authors' work, and Merril's first science fiction short story, "That Only a Mother" (1948), and first novel, Shadow on the Hearth (1950), dealt with the contemporary terror of possible nuclear fallout.4 In 1950 she also produced her first anthology, Shot in the 1 Judith Merril and Emily Pohl-Weary, Better to Have Loved: The Life of Judith Merril (Toronto: Between The Lines, 2002), 172. 2 Merril and Pohl-Weary, 191. 3 In her memoir, Merril discusses her short working relationship with Gary Davis, a WWII veteran and the founder of the International Registry of World Citizens in Paris. From 1950 forward Merril, a "politically conscious" "revolutionary,"5 continued to write, anthologize, and advocate speculative science fiction that addressed relevant sociopolitical concerns. These life experiences, including her exodus from the United States in November 1968, are chronicled in Merril's award-winning memoir, Better to Have Loved: The Life of Judith Merril (2002) .The memoir was collaboratively constructed by Merril and her granddaughter, Emily Pohl-Weary. Although Merril only completed portions of the memoir before her death in 1997, she left Pohl-Weary with "thorough instructions" for organizing and completing the manuscript.6 In their study of her non-linear, pioneering memoir, Dianne Newell and Jenea Tallentire identify Merril's intent to, as Merril put it, "tell it like it was" regarding her life and her experiences.7 Significantly, in the memoir Pohl-Weary identifies an unpublished piece by Merril entitled "Toronto Tulips, Traffic and Grass: The Love Token of a Token Immigrant," which Pohl-Weary suggests Merril intended for a book proposal featuring herself as the "token immigrant."8 Merril discussed another, similar book project (in a letter to friend Ivor Rogers) just weeks after the 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention. She proposed an eye-witness account of the convention. Typescript supplied by the authors. 8 Ibid., 181. 2 Merril described to Rogers did not materialize, but the three essays in her memoir "A Power in the Ghetto: Swinging London, Sour America, and 'Free Canada'"; "Rochdale College: A What if Time"; and "Toronto Tulips" partially capture Merril's transition from American exile to American-Canadian as she experienced it.10 Merril was not a purposeful travel-writer (per se); it is possible, however, to read her memoir, correspondence, and interviews she gave as a type of experimentation with the genre. Merril used what were conventions of travel writing to create a narrative recording of her expatriation from the United States. Portions of Better to Have Loved and Merril's unpublished correspondence and drawings, published work, and interviews constitute her expatriate narrative. Sidonie Smith's gendered theory of automobility and her insightful identification of the "expatriate" travel narrative in Moving Lives: 20th Century Women's Travel Writing suggests a way to understand this narrative.11 Examining women's narratives, Smith distinguishes between the expatriate narrative and traditional travel narratives, noting that the expatriate narrative 9 Judith Merril to Ivor Rogers, 12 September 1968, Judith Merril Fonds, MG30-D326 v. 14, file 16, Library and Archives of Canada [hereafter, "Merril Papers"]. 10 Merril began to work on her memoir in the 1990s and recorded stories and instructions for the memoir on tapes. Smith argues that women historically used travel and travel writing to increase their personal agency, but that women's narratives remained constrained by patriarchy. For Smith, it is the technologies of motion - be it plane, train or automobile - that play an integral role in women's use of travel in redefining their identity. (Smith 2001:25) Both Lawrence and Primeau argue that women interpreted the places they encountered differently then men. Karen Lawrence concludes that women travelers

    Wychwood Park Wychwood Park sits on a height of land that was once the Lake Iroquois shore. The source for Taddle Creek lies to the north and provides the water for the pond found in the centre of the Park. Today, Taddle Creek continues under Davenport Road at the base of the escarpment and flows like an underground snake towards the Gooderham and Worts site and into Lake Ontario. Access to this little known natural area of Toronto is by two entrances one at the south, where a gate prevents though traffic, and the other entrance at the north end, off Tyrell Avenue, which provides the regular vehicular entrance and exit. A pedestrian entrance is found between 77 and 81 Alcina Avenue. Wychwood Park was founded by Marmaduke Matthews and Alexander Jardine in the third quarter of the 19th century. In 1874, Matthews, a land- scape painter, built the first house in the Park (6 Wychwood Park) which he named “Wychwood,” after Wychwood Forest near his home in England. The second home in Wychwood Park, “Braemore,” was built by Jardine a few years later (No. 22). When the Park was formally established in 1891, the deed provided building standards and restrictions on use. For instance, no commercial activities were permitted, there were to be no row houses, and houses must cost not less than $3,000. By 1905, other artists were moving to the Park. Among the early occupants were the artist George A. Reid (Uplands Cottage at No. 81) and the architect Eden Smith (No. 5). Smith designed both 5 and 81, as well as a number of others, all in variations of the Arts and Crafts style promoted by C.F.A.

Nineteenth and twentieth century historical chroniclers often downplayed the historic presence of the Mississaugas and their Indigenous predecessors by drawing on doctrines of terra nullius , ignoring the significance of the Toronto Purchase, and changing the city’s foundational story from the establishment of York in 1793 to the incorporation of the City of Toronto in 1834. These chroniclers usually assumed that “real Indians” and urban life were inimical. Often their representations implied that local Indigenous peoples had no significant history and thus the region had little or no history before the arrival of Europeans. Alternatively, narratives of ethical settler indigenization positioned the Indigenous past as the uncivilized starting point in a monological European theory of historical development. i i iii In many civic discourses, the city stood in for the nation as a symbol of its future, and national history stood in for the region’s local history. The national replaced ‘the Indigenous’ in an ideological process that peaked between the 1880s and the 1930s.

Speculation of scientific theories is the base of science fiction. Critic Robert Heinlein used ‘realistic speculation’ as one of the features of science fiction. The present paper aims at disclosing the realistic speculation of theory of origin of universe used by R. J. Sawyer, a Canadian Science Fiction writer in his book Fossil Hunter (1993) as Musing of Watcher. It depicts an Earth like world on a moon which orbits a gas giant inhabited by a species of highly evolved sentient Tyrannosaurs called Quintanglio among various other creatures from the late cretaceous period imported to this SALAMA ISAK moon by aliens 65 million years prior to the story. Musing of the Watcher is the sub MANER plot of Fossil Hunter. Musing of the Watcher is God like entity which explorers realistic speculation of scientific theory of origin of universe. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the use of realistic speculation in science fiction and theory of origin of universe. The second includes the brief introduction of the author and the analysis of Fossil Hunter. The third part of paper concludes the perfection of the author in the use of realistic speculation about the theory of origin of universe in his novel Fossil Hunter.

    ONE BAD BOARD AWAY FROM BANKRUPTCY: HOUSING CO-OPERATIVES, SELF-MANAGEMENT, AND THE LANDLORD–TENANT RELATIONSHIP by Josh Hawley A thesis submitted to the Department of Cultural Studies In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada (May, 2019) Copyright © Josh Hawley, 2019 Abstract This thesis explores the development of the natural condition of co-operation into a large, apolitical movement and the effects of reshaping working-class people into co-operators. Semi- structured interviews, content analysis, and a limited autoethnography through a community- based action research paradigm, as well as a genealogical method, are used. A working-class analysis is applied throughout. In Ontario, residents of housing co-operatives are not considered tenants, following a history of legislation, legal precedents, and lobbying efforts by the co-op housing federations. This fact is manifested through the use of language, the shaping of co-op resident subjectivities, legal protections for residents, and the shunning of traditional tenant organizing direct action tactics to fight evictions and harassment. Six residents from five large-scale housing co-ops in Ontario participated in this research. Their experiences are compared and contrasted to the experiences of eight residents from seven housing co-ops in the Milton-Parc neighbourhood of Montreal. All 12 housing co-ops were created through state funding programs according to co-op corporation legislation. Residents of the Ontario co-ops expressed having few options when facing issues with their board of directors and staff. Residents are held responsible for the self-management of their housing project yet are encouraged to hire management staff.
