"The Love Token of a Token Immigrant": Judith Merril's Expatriate Narrative, 1968-1972 by Jolene McCann A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in The Faculty of Graduate Studies (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA April 2006 © Jolene McCann, 2006 Abstract Judith Merril was an internationally acclaimed science fiction (sf) writer and editor who expatriated from the United States to Canada in November 1968 with the core of what would become the Merril Collection of Science Fiction, Speculation and Fantasy in Toronto. Merril chronicled her transition from a nominal American or "token immigrant" to an authentic Canadian immigrant in personal documents and a memoir, Better to Have Loved: the Life of Judith Merril (2002). I argue that Sidonie Smith's travel writing theory, in particular, her notion of the "expatriate narrative" elucidates Merril's transition from a 'token' immigrant to a representative token of the American immigrant community residing in Toronto during the 1960s and 1970s. I further argue that Judith Merril's expatriate narrative links this personal transition to the simultaneous development of her science fiction library from its formation at Rochdale College to its donation by Merril in 1970 as a special branch of the Toronto Public Library (TPL). For twenty-seven years after Merril's expatriation from the United States, the Spaced Out Library cum Merril Collection - her love-token to the city and the universe - moored Merril politically and intellectually in Toronto. ii Acknowledgements I would like to thank my supervisor Dianne Newell for introducing me to the Merril Collection and sharing her extensive collection of primary sources on science fiction and copies of Merril's correspondence with me, as well as for making my visit to the Merril Collection at the Library and Archives of Canada, Ottawa possible. -

Secondary Sources About Elizabeth Cummins PREFACE Scope and Purpose This Judith Merril bibliography includes both primary and secondary works, arranged in categories that are suitable for her career and that are, generally, common to the other bibliographies in the Center for Bibliographic Studies in Science Fiction. Works by Merril include a variety of types and modes—pieces she wrote at Morris High School in the Bronx, newsletters and fanzines she edited; sports, westerns, and detective fiction and non-fiction published in pulp magazines up to 1950; science fiction stories, novellas, and novels; book reviews; critical essays; edited anthologies; and both audio and video recordings of her fiction and non-fiction. Works about Merill cover over six decades, beginning shortly after her first science fiction story appeared (1948) and continuing after her death (1997), and in several modes— biography, news, critical commentary, tribute, visual and audio records. This new online bibliography updates and expands the primary bibliography I published in 2001 (Elizabeth Cummins, “Bibliography of Works by Judith Merril,” Extrapolation, vol. 42, 2001). It also adds a secondary bibliography. However, the reasons for producing a research- based Merril bibliography have been the same for both publications. Published bibliographies of Merril’s work have been incomplete and often inaccurate. -

By this framing, the continuing popularity of stories about paranormal phenomena and supernatural entities – on mainstream television, or in print genres such as urban fantasy and paranormal romance – may seem to be a regressive reaction against the authority of and experience of living in technoscientific modernity. Nevertheless, the boundaries of science fiction, as with any genre, are relational rather than fixed, and critical engagements with Western/Northern technoscientific knowledge and practice and modern human identity and being may be found not just in science fiction “proper,” or in the scholarly field of science and technology studies, but also in the related genres of fantasy and paranormal romance. -

Sawyer Canadian Science Fiction Author Called “the dean of Canadian science fiction” by The Ottawa Citizen, Robert J. Sawyer has just won another prestigious award. For the first time in 30 years – and only the fourth time ever – the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association (CSFFA) bestowed a Lifetime Achievement award on an author. The award was presented in Ottawa on Sunday, October 6, 2013, to Ottawa-born author Robert J. Sawyer. Sawyer is one of only eight writers in history – and the only Canadian – to win all three of the world’s top awards for best science fiction novel of the year: • The World Science Fiction Society’s Hugo Award, which Sawyer won in 2003 for his novel Hominids; • The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America’s Nebula Award, which he won in 1996 for his novel The Terminal Experiment; and • The John W. Campbell Memorial Award, given by the Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction at Kansas University, which he won in 2006 for Mindscan. Rob has given keynotes and talks all over the world, including at the Library of Congress in Washington, the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, the headquarters of Garanti Bank in Istanbul, the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona, Cambridge University in England, and the National Library in Singapore. Rob’s specialty is extrapolating today’s scientific, medical, and ethical concerns into the near future, and making the radical changes that are The International Festival forthcoming understandable to any audience. -

AN INTERVIEW WITH BRUCE STERLING PETAR JANDRIĆ [email protected] Zagreb University of Applied Sciences ABSTRACT. Bruce Sterling, author, journalist, editor, and critic, was born in 1954. Best known for his ten science fiction novels, he also writes short stories, book reviews, design criticism, opinion columns, and introductions for books ranging from Ernst Juenger to Jules Verne. During 2005, he was the Visionary in Residence at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. In 2008 he was the Guest Curator for the Share Festival of Digital Art and Culture in Torino, Italy, and the Visionary in Residence at the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam. In 2011 he returned to Art Center as Visionary in Residence to run a special project on Augmented Reality. In 2013, he was the Visionary in Residence at the Center for Science and the Imagination at Arizona State University. In 2015 he was the Curator of the Casa Jasmina project at the Torino Fab Lab. In 2016 he was Visionary in Residence at the Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination. Bruce’s nonfiction works include The Hacker Crackdown: Law and Disorder on the Electronic Frontier (1992), Tomorrow Now: Envisioning the Next Fifty Years (2003), Shaping Things (2005), and The Epic Struggle Of The Internet Of Things (2014). Bruce’s novels include Involution Ocean (1977), Islands in the Net (1988), The Difference Engine (1991) (with William Gibson), Holy Fire (1996), The Zenith Angle (2004), and Pirate Utopia (2016). -

GORDON COLLIER ] Spaceship Creole Nalo Hopkinson, Canadian-Caribbean Fabulist Fiction, and Linguistic/Cultural Syncretism ALO HOPKINSON is the daughter of the Guyanese poet, play- wright and actor Abdur–Rahman Slade Hopkinson (1934–1993), N whose lasting influence on her ideas of craft and the Caribbean is everywhere discernible in her work. She has harvested numerous awards and prestigious nominations in the field of science fiction and the category of most promising young writer, and is becoming something of a cult figure in North America.1 Hopkinson has produced an impressive body of work, including Brown Girl in the Ring and Midnight Robber – the two novels I wish to discuss here – a collection of short stories, published at the end of 2001 under the title Skin Folk, and two edited anthologies – one of Caribbean 1 She has received the World Fantasy Award, the John W. Campbell Award, the Locus First Novel Award, the Warner Aspect First Novel Contest, the Philip K. Dick Award for science fiction in paperback original and the Ontario Arts Council Foun- dation Award, and has been a juror for the James Tiptree Memorial Award for specu- lative fiction exploring gender and for the William Crawford Award (first fantasy novel).
