Regional ethnographers have been studied the origin of the name ‘Kolomyia’ for 150 years already. Some of them consider that the name is derived from the river Myia or a tin god Myia, near which the first settlement appeared. The others mention that in the Croatian language the word ‘kolomyie’ means a deep gully filled with water, though the latest researches show that the old Croats did not populate Kolomyia land. There is an ancient version according to which the name of the city is derived from the fact that passing through the town salters washed ‘kola’ (wheels) here. Another version says that the city was named after the first Galician crowned king born as Hungarian Koloman. A true solution to the origin of the city name is likely to be hidden in the depth of millennia. That is indicated by the first three letters – ‘kol’, that are present in the names of many cities and localities since the time of the Indo-European settlement. But it is unknown what this word means. The answer is up to future generations. 5 Walk around Kolomyia MAIN HISTORIC EVENTS 1241 – The first chronicle mention of Kolomyia. 11th – 14th centuries – Princely epoch of Kolomyia, shrouded in mystery, with the exception of a few terse chronicle lines.
